Cagers and how they drive.

Left lane bandits/campers are extra bad in Ontario because the highways are not engineered/designed properly.

Most of our highways add and remove lanes from the right. The proper way (and the way it is done in most other places) is to add and remove lanes mostly from the left. If As an example, if I get on the QEW in TO and I am heading to Fort Erie, I can camp out in the left lane and pretty much never change lanes all the way there (maybe once or twice tops), If I do it correctly and sit in the right lane, well it keeps ending and you have to change lanes to keep going.

So out left lanes are full of nervous people who are not passing but don't like to change lanes (and they may not even be knowingly doing it, we have modified their behaviour) and the turds that think they have mad skills and feel entitled because they think they are going fast or they are driving a fancy pants vehicle...

Add and subtract from the left, right lane continues through will fix a lot of this problem. It ranks up there in sacred cow stupidity with the TTC not using standard gauge for their rail....

I'll add to this. Car sitting in the left turn lane, light changes and roll forward, can't really see in the opposite lane is clear (due to large truck etc.) so waiting for things to become safe. Jackass behind determines they have waiting long enough pulls out (into traffic) moves ahead of vehicle waiting to make left hand turn pulls back into left hand lane now ahead of vehicle they deemed was taking to long. Lights starts to change jackass makes left hand turn leaving the other vehicle in a tight spot of to go or not to go situation.

I've actually seen this happen many times and have even had it happen to me once but not to this extreme.

I would like to see all left hand turn lanes (or at least many more of them) have an advanced green, sadly I've been at a turn left at the worst part of the day and the advanced green never comes on, been at the same intersection at 2am and get the advanced green !?!

See this is the kind of nonsense I have mentioned before, the more this is allowed to happen the more it influences other drivers behaviours, and more stupidity.

I don't know what the solution is to this, education can only go so far, and lets face it you can play "nice" for the training course then go back to bad habits/aggressive driving if someone chooses to.
More cameras, enforcement etc? Definitely smarter/better infrastructure would help to.

That maneuver could catch a 172 charge (as could almost any other maneuver in a vehicle). Or they could just enforce existing reasonable laws that have built in backstops to minimize corruption.

I am sure there are plenty of laws for this example and others but they are not being enforced, or dealt with.

I'll just add something that I have seen very recently (like last night, and several times) by drivers which is annoying AF.
Driver sitting at a smaller intersection, in what appears to be waiting for the light to change to make a left turn, light changes, and they make a right turn, which they could have done at any time.....

Education is part of the issue, but would have not effect on this level unconsciousness...

Safe riding folks, the stupid are among us!
Might be from a locale where right turn on red is not allowed, or they're not certain of being able to make the turn.
Better than rolling through and creeping along at 1/4 the speed limit, while cutting off a motorcycle which is at the limit.

True I didn't think about that, now I feel like I had fake outrage.... 🙄
Yes impeding traffic is no good either.

But let's take a look. This is where it happened last night, seems very typical type intersection.

From what I can tell advance green is awarded to whichever side has the most cars (detected by the magnets?) sitting in the turning lane. If you’re solo and opposite traffic has 2 or 3 cars then they should get it. If you’re solo and opposite has none you should get it, unless you weren’t detected properly.

Those in the know feel free to correct me.

I don't think the logic is that simple in many cases. I know Toronto considered "smart" traffic flow at one point. I'm not so sure how far the implementation went. Basically a computer watching flow throughout the grid and playing with light timings to try to keep people moving (eg even though an advanced green may help you get through the intersection you would be plugging up the next two to three intersections so they essentially queue you outside the choke point).

I'm not saying you are wrong, I can say that the one that I used as an example has had 5 cars in the left turn lane and still no advanced green. This was at about 4-5pm on a weekday where I would assume it would make the most sense to be on.. But Maybe 2am is the real "busy" time and I am just not in the know...

I have no insider knowledge, all this is based on my commuting observations. Major or minor intersections, I can’t recall the last time that I was turning and did not get the advance green if my side had the majority of the cars.

Some intersections are also dumber with one side getting an advanced green regardless of traffic. They could also be handing out advanced greens based on time (although in the middle of the night, advanced green makes very little sense to me in most situations).

Sort of. The intersection is usually set for two or three cars turning (or more), but it does not sense or count all the cars, instead it just senses the second or third car (or could be more for really busy streets). So a solo car can just sit back in the second or third spot with no one in front and trigger the advanced green. You can see the cutouts for the loops in the pavement to see where it is "looking" and then sit on the last one or straddle the last two when solo....

Second, there can be time of day preferences at some intersections. In the morning it may hand out advance greens (with the above logic) in only one direction, the opposite in the afternoon. Or not at all at some times. This part is intersection to intersection.

The logic is usually pretty simple and once you know "how" it works you can figure out how to trigger the system "in your favour".... but then you can also get frustrated if you know it is the third car but you are second and the third guy is siting too far back for the sensor....pull up you idiot, otherwise we won't get the advance....

I've been seeing a weird new trend lately. About 5 times this year but never really noticed it happen before.
Car waiting in left turn lane at an intersection facing a red light. Casually make U-turn without waiting for a green.
Does this not count as running a red?

I say yes as red prevents you from entering intersection (with an exception for stop and proceed when clear for right turn). Now, as most intersections where this would happen have a concrete median dividing the directions, does this count as turning onto a one-way road on red? I think no but someone could try the argument.

Should put that up in the laws thread. I've seen it done both ways.

It gets weird when someone is making a right turn on red, and another a U turn on green to the same lane.
Once you've made the first left of the U turn, are you now facing a red?

Didn't want to start a whole thread on this, pretty sure its illegal and I wouldn't do it. Just surprised at seeing it more often.

For this situation, I've always assumed the u-turner had right of way but should still be cautious as most people making a right do not look out for this. Traffic signal for when you are entering the intersection not in it.

With a lot of protected VIVA bus lanes in the middle blocking a lot of left turns, U-turns are normal and encouraged in these areas (on advanced green). On red, you would run the risk of hitting a bus...

Had something like this happen to me today. I'm approaching a stop sign (on street A) to turn right (onto 2 lane street, Street B) with my indicator on, see a guy wanting to make a left (onto Street A from Street B) no signal , Come to a full stop and check both left (for traffic and people) and then right (for people). Safe to turn so I start my turn ( like an idiot I assume he was actually turning left) NOPE he pulls a very lazy U-turn into my lane, cuts me off, blasts his horn and gives me the finger as he speeds off to the clearly read light maybe 400-500 feet ahead of us.. I slam on my brakes, then proceed before I am the ass blocking traffic on (Street B) get over to my left hand turn lane to wait for the non-existent advanced green to risk my life again with people running the yellow/red...
