2012 Auto Show

Every carmaker does a MMC (mid cycle model change) and freshens up the vehicle.

The point is..... people keep buying them.

Apart from the grill and a set of wheels, would you not agree the overall design language of the vehicle is the same?

I have always called them mid cycle enhancements. I believe the TL's sales went up 43 % because of the beak change which it desperately needed. That's not my point.....just that other manufacturers have made their share of duds. Hyundai is capitalizing and has surpassed Honda in sales. Very impressive.

You're right, American motor companies cannot do anything right...heck, even Car and Driver suppo...oh wait - Ford Focus beats out Mazda and Hyundai in subcompact category...http://www.caranddriver.com/compari...-3-comparison-test-2012-ford-focus-sel-page-6 (if you want to see the scores, looky here: http://media.caranddriver.com/files...t-car-and-driversmall-sedan-final-results.pdf ). Well, of course the Honda should kick Ford's butt...oh dear...nope: http://www.caranddriver.com/comparisons/2012-ford-focus-se-vs-2012-honda-civic-ex-comparison-test

All in good fun, but the point is for every dig you get in on the American car scene, we can just as easily give it back to the imports (case in point: first-gen Honda Insight http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/1/1b/Honda_Insight_Back.JPG - what a stunner...lol).

CAR AND DRIVER -- 10 BEST

Top Ten Marques

From 1983 through 2008, the following marques were represented on the list the most times, including both the car and truck lists (except for the 2008 trucks).

Top Ten Marques

From 1983 through 2008, the following marques were represented on the list the most times, including both the car and truck lists (except for the 2008 trucks).
RankMarqueNumber of wins
1Honda73
2Toyota27
3BMW24
4Mazda23
5Chevrolet21
6Acura16
7Porsche15
7Nissan15
7Audi15
10Chrysler13

Top Manufacturers

Further breaking down the marques into their controlling manufacturers amplifies Honda's dominance of the contest over the last 25 years.
Note that this number is skewed by the multiple products picked over the years. For example, the Chrysler minivans were picked three times, totalling 8 "points" for Chrysler from three wins. The Diamond-Star cars were a similar problem, double-dipping "points" for both Mitsubishi, Plymouth, and Eagle. These situations were not "fixed"; rather, they are left as-is, skewing the totals.
Note also that changing ownership can affect the count. Chrysler and Dodge products from 1999 through 2007 were counted for Daimler-Benz/DaimlerChrysler/Daimler AG, as that company had wholly acquired Chrysler in that period. Similarly, Saab's post-2000 products, had they won a place on the list, would be counted for General Motors. Despite strong corporate ties through this period, Mazda remains separate from Ford, Subaru from General Motors and Toyota, Nissan from Renault, and Mitsubishi from Chrysler.

Top Ten Models

From 1983 through 2008, the following individual models were represented on the list the most times. In 2007, Honda's Odyssey and Pilot trucks appeared in the top ten, a first for any truck.

But wait, Brian....

Evidently,

Why would they discontinue the entire range with sales figures like this?

Redesigned and called the Acadia?
I think they sell 6000-10000 units a month.

Similar to what happened to Integras......marketing changed the name.

All four wheel vehicles are pos.......Unless it's an old American muscle car.

I'll take a 1968-72 Vette over a new one, same goes for the Mustang.

I'll jump on the Hyundai/Kia bandwagon when they start making a real car with a V-8,no gas gauge and only the rear tires spin due to the lack of traction at a traffic light.

:p

They have its the genesis sedan has v8 rwd, and the genesis coupe with the v6 or 2l turbo can both smoke the rear wheels.

Battle of the Hybrids.....

Chevy Volt - starts at $41,000 for base model. The one at the auto show was $45,000

vs.

Toyota - 3 hybrid models- Camry Hybrid, Prius, and Prius V price range from $26,000-27,000

Any wagers on how soon GM will pull the "plug" (pun intended, :lmao:) on the Chevy Volt?

How does it idle at a stop sign, nice and smooth or lumpy like it's going to stall?

Gas gauge?

Never mind...the whole industry will pull the plug on hybrids soon. The volume is so low and they are not profitable..I read they sold 26,000 hybrids in Canada last year..something like 0.2% of the total cars sold. And the Volt is really not what Toyota is offering..it's a slightly different animal.

Probably after Honda pulls the plug on theirs:

" Honda, whose 2011 hybrid sales fell 5.9 percent from a year earlier, continued to see lagging demand for its models. January hybrid sales plunged 58 percent from a year earlier to just 1,304 vehicles, with Honda's best-selling hybrid – the Insight – moving just 492 vehicles. The Honda CR-Z sport-coupe hybrid had a 59 percent drop in sales to 363 vehicles, while the Honda Civic Hybrid sales fell 31 percent."

"GM also boosted alt-fuel sales from a combination of more demand for the Chevrolet Volt extended-range plug-in, and from sales of the new Buick LaCrosse eAssist. The latter model moved 803 vehicles and accounted for about 20 percent of all LaCrosses sold in January, while the Volt almost doubled year-earlier sales to 603 vehicles."

In the eyes of price concious consumers, its just another hybrid.

Yeah, true enough I suppose. That's the problem with hybrids..they don't pay-back. They're all in the same boat. Gas prices seem set to spike however..so maybe people will run to hybrids??
