2012 Auto Show

And you know what? I agree with you. They've definitely lost their sporting edge. Remember cars like the CRX? Prelude? Integra Type Rs? the NSX? the S2000??

They seem to be catering to the masses now, instead of the enthusiasts.

On a brighter hope, the new NSX which has been and on and off again project for years will make a return, and hopefully this will energize Honda again to start making cars that we want to enjoy for the driving exprerience again.

It seems that Mazda took the crown now for sporty asian cars.

Agree completely. Even the Veloster..which seemed like sure winner.. I mean, I'm sure some people like it, but it's been trashed by the sporting press. It doesn't look nearly as good as the show car, has terrible performance and the handling is typical Accent..which is not great but merely mediocre.

I look at the CR-X and think, that's what the CR-Z could have been.. I think the CR-X got the same mileage as the CR-Z 20 years ago..

Yep, here's a few winners right here, real classics....

...you know, as designs go, those North American models were pretty horrid, but Googling Honda Civics, Toyota, Nissan, etc. from the 1980's (I chose the 80s on a whim). doesn't really make Michelangelo happy in the pants...

Just sayin.

I actually liked the Fiero lol. Friend of mine modded the hell of out it and it looked pretty good.

The Veloster has more hp coming very soon. IMHO, if Hyundai can head hunt a few Mazda engineers from the handling/ride department, and keep the price down, then the competition will truly be done.

Reflecting on my thoughts from the auto show, if I was just your average joe guy, and wasnt an auto enthusiast, checking out all the makes at an auto show, I would have been truly impressed with Hyundais offerings.

Gary........race you for pinks??

Since there is no current NSX yet, I'll have to make do with Honda's other finest.

You know, I heard the Aztec was actually a pretty good vehicle..if somewhat..hideous.. :-)

^^^^^^ Perhaps., but few of those other models were ridiculed and/or panned as badly in the automotive press as these models.

No wonder it had a short lifespan.....

"Produced by Pontiac from the 2001 model year to the 2005 model year. The Aztek was heavily criticized on its exterior styling, withTime magazine in 2007 calling the Aztek one of the worst cars of all time,[SUP][1][/SUP] and again in 2010 as the 34th worst invention of all time.[SUP][2][/SUP]A poll in The Daily Telegraph in August 2008 placed the Aztek at number one of the "100 ugliest cars" of all time.[SUP][3]"

You go GM, you GO!!!

Oh, don't get me wrong..it was a disaster! :-) Apparently they had so many of them they were GIVING them away to GM execs.. On the plus side, if you could stand driving what looks like an industrial power washer, they were heavily discounted.. :-)

Bud, Honda's currently produces V8s for Indy cars for years and years. They've dabbled with V12s and V8s and turbos in F1 for years as well with tremendous success.

Its pretty weak to suggest that they can't "figure out" how to put these types of engines in passenger cars.

Lay off on the weak sauce, man.
.

For some reason I have a feeling that you are affiliated with Honda or even work there.

Whatever they are smoking i will have some.

As for Honda, they march to their own beat. Probably the only manufacture in the world that does completely the opposite of what it's own customers want.

So I did the show today.

Still on the fence about Chrysler. I get the feeling their whole product line is managed by elite image consultants rather than engineers or enthusiasts, but their refreshed designs are pretty good and their lineup of new engines looks real promising. Not sure if I'm ready to like them anyways.

I was glad to discover in the Auto Exotica section that the uber filthy rich have a cornucopia of high zoot models to choose from, it's not just Ferrari or Rolls any more. Hooray for them. In fact I can't even keep track of the ordinary luxury car models any more. I couldn't spend any time in the Audi, MB, BMW, Acura, Infinity, Lexus or Lincoln areas because they made my head throb with confusion. Only Volvo has simple and sensible nomenclature. I took a picture of all the model names on the dozen or so signposts at the MB stand so I could study them later. The salesfolk at MB were the best of the lot though, they seemed genuine as opposed to all the fake smiles everywhere else.

The Nissans and Infinities are a total bore fest. They have absolutely no character or redeeming quality of any kind. If this keeps up for the long run, they're gonna go bye-bye from the marketplace.

Even Hyundai now has a luxe model, the Equus. I figure so many of these stinking richies must have been taking the bus until now given how poorly their needs were served in the past! Crazyness.

I couldn't help noticing how strong those Korean offerings are though. Love the new Rio, and the Elantra GT looks promising, plus all the other new models from just the past 2 years. And the value! How can anybody compete? Though that Veloster is an abomination IMO. Just like it's name. Veloster, how corny. But it seems to appeal to it's target audience so who am I to judge.

Toyota was humdrum, a few bits of trim were falling off in a lot of cars. Weird. But man I love the Sienna, what a sexy MoFo minivan that is! Yes, I called a minivan sexy. Deal with it.

GM is continuing to impress me. I didn't quite get what the new Orlando was about, until I figured it's like a Mazda 5 (which I like) but with more style. And if any of you are planning on sitting in the CTS-V wagon then you should bring a latex membrane to protect yourself from the bodily fluid I accidentally left on the tight little seat when I slipped into her.

Was surprised that there's a new Fusion. I think it risks cannibalizing sales from the Taurus now with it's larger format. Oopsie doopsie! It was cool though to look at the head of a DI engine for the first time, as they had one disassembled and laid out on benches for people to look at. Nice pieces of machinery those motors are.

Wasn't expecting a new Impreza either. New bodywork anyways, they never seem to change the mechanicals on those cars. So now they're like the outgoing model, but uglier.

Re: GM still facing huge pension shortfall

Do you realize how many companies pension funds are under funded?

"That combination is raising questions about the sustainability of pension plans at scores of Canadian companies"

"Most defined-benefit pension plans in Canada are underfunded currently because the investment markets have done so poorly over the recent past"

Re: GM still facing huge pension shortfall

Thousands of jobs, 10's of thousands of retirees that the govt collects taxes on.
The entity here is GM of Canada, GM is USA.
GM is the only auto company that has a Design/Engineering center in Canada.
Parkwood estates in Oshawa was owned by one of the founders of GM I believe.
