Want to start shooting, anyone care to get me started?

Good course so far. test for the PAL tomorrow morning then the hunting course.

i just googled the C96, thats a pistol, and a rare on at that....they called it the broomhandle due to the gun handle look.

Thats a collectors gun and rare in good shape...chances are, you wouldnt want to shoot it if you had it.

Ah, good point. What about the FN 57?

Lol, dude what is with you and wonky firearms....FN 5.7 is not rare or unusual, other than the fact that the ammo it shoots is RARE! So far only three firearms shoot the high velocity 5.7x28mm, the P90, the Five Seven and one more....

Why cant you be normal and start with a glock or a 1911? lol

Glock does not appeal to me, did not like the one I shot when I was in Daytona a few years ago. 1911 is possible, how would I find a good one? There is so many brand manufacturing the design.

Guns are treated the same was as motorcycles in Canada....you buy one, own it for a while, sell it and try something else. I dont have an RPAL and with that, cant own any pistols but i've handled a few....best you can do is go to a gun store and handle a few and see which one fits you.

Or have people at the range loan you theirs for a mag or two. Shooting sports have a very friendly, welcoming and helpful community. If you're getting into action shooting, you have a couple of other options.. M&P (even though many guys say it feels the same as the Glock) and CZ-75 Shadow (the #1 gun in IPSC production; you'd need lighter grips if you want it to be legal for IDPA as well).

When you get your RPAL go to a shop that has a wide variety of pistols and hold them. Basically you want something that feels good and puts your finger tip right on the trigger when you pick it up. You also want it to not move off your target when you squeeze the trigger so.... sight something, pull the trigger slowly and when it clicks, watch to see if your sights stay lined up or if they move up/down left/right.

The gun for you is the one that stays on target. As for brands.... who really cares? Brand loyal shooters are talking about what works for them only. Spend the amount of money you want on the gun that fits you. A $2000 gun that doesn't work for you isn't as good as a $600 gun that does so....

"A good one" is relative.

Figure out what works for you and then research them, like anything else that people buy. If it doesn't have "stay the **** away from this POS" reviews it's as good as you need. You're not a competition shooter trying to make a living off your ability.

Like FS said, the Glock and the M&P are almost the same to him and are night and day different to me. Neither of us are wrong in saying that. It's just what works.

Default advice for all new shooters is buy a Ruger .22 target pistol and get good at shooting and progress through the calibers. Much like the "start on a 250" advice. You can sell them for what you paid for them (if you buy used) or just keep them for a cheap range gun.
I still have my first .22 rifle that I got 25 years ago.....

Come fire my .454 mag and see how bad you are at high power handguns and imagine how long it would take to get good using that compared to a slow progression. :)

That one is more for carrying into the bush and wanting to bag the occasional rodent (rabbit). When you go to the range, you also carry at least a brick of ammo, eyes and ears and any other toys that you might need. I'd go with a garden-variety .22 like the 10/22 or 597. More accessories and you can get better accuracy out of it.

I got one of those, the AR7's....not something i would start shooting with. Like i said in the PM, Savage Mark II

Semi auto, great for plinking....heavy barrel, shoots amazing.

I also have an SKS (7.62x39), a yugo M48 mauser (8x57), 870 Remington 12ga shotgun, and a Marlin XS7 bolt action in 223.

You do not need to be a member of a club to buy an restricted firearm. All you need is your RPAL. Some CFO's will try to push this. Especially in BC and QC,
but it is not a requirement.

Another cheap but good option is Browning Buck Mark. Wanstalls carries it and their shipping is only $10, but you gotta be a member of a club (which applies to any restricted).

What this baby looks like

And this review seems to be pretty accurate.. You can even take this one to bullseye pistol nights at the range, but don't expect to be winning any prizes.

umm yea you do....When you get your RPAL you have to clarify what is the purpose....good luck putting down "self defense" cuz you aint never getting your licence then. So the other two legitimate reasons are target shooting and collector. As a target shooter you can only be issued an ATT when you are a member of a club. how else are you going to target shoot?

He's talking about owning a restricted gun, not getting an ATT. Technically he's correct; as far as I know there's no law in the books that states you must declare a valid reason for purchasing a restricted firearm if you have an RPAL.

Correct, but you do not need to be a member of a club to purchase one. Atleast not in Ontario. In BC, QC and I believe Alberta the CFO will not even let you purchase one without being a member. You can target shoot without being a member of a club. There are many clubs who allow walk ins. You can also get temporary ATT's as opposed to the LTATT you get with a club membership.

Maybe that's why I was misinformed.. Well, first at the club and then by a retailer out of BC.

What I do is whenever I'm in the states, I just splurge. I fire a whole set of pistols & prohibited firearms without all the crapload of restrictions.

It lets me test alot of guns before I make my mind up
