Just confirmed my AZ shot for tomorrow at noon. Looking forward to it.

Some friends have indicated they're never getting the shot as they're not believes of the short turnaround time. They'd prefer to pay for the quarantine hotel. Go figure. Others jumped on the vax train as soon as there were rumours of lifted restrictions for fully vaxxed people.

No. It means you can come back July 5 without quarantining. US has said border is closed until at least July 21.

They say that, but I know a dozen people who went to vacation in Florida and Hawaii this past winter/spring.

So is it really closed when all you need to do is drive to Buffalo for your flight?

And that is why they are doing it. To get people vaccinated. You can still get and transmit COVID once you are vaccinated, more so with the variants. So easing restrictions makes close to zero sense medically.

I should have put closed in quotation marks. It is as closed as it ever was but that has never really been closed. If you had lots of money, it was wide open. If you had some money, it was reasonably open. If you were poor, too bad for you.

But isn’t the risk of catching COVID, or transmitting it, MUCH smaller than when you’re unvaccinated?

By ‘catching’ I mean being bed ridden by it. You still get it….just the effects are MUCH lower.

Risk of being symptomatic is drastically reduced. Preliminary research says risk of transmission is lower but finalized large studies are not yet complete. Based on apparent reduction in spread in highly vaccinated countries, it is likely that vaccine is reducing the risk of "catching" covid as opposed to allowing you to catch it (and spread it) but you are asymptomatic.

MIL and FIL are 2nd dosed

But I grow tired of the public health

97 year old veteran
90 year old wife

You made them wait 16 weeks for their 2nd dose

Which by the way I understand the philosophy of the 1 dose in arms strategy

But Toronto PH knows that the independent 85+ crowd in Toronto isnt large

And yet when this small population shows up as good citizens after their long wait you give them the option at the door of take Moderna or go home.

Cause you want the Pfizer for the 12-17 year olds

I know that probability that mixing Pfizer and Moderna is in all likelihood fine.

But really?
The most vulnerable part of your population....with no real data just your opinion that the 2 doses are the same.

So I made the RN onsite talk to them both so that they made informed decisions.

And this morning all I hear on social media is that mixing is ok just get whichever one is available

Phuck u. That was the same message you said before and why I have AZ in my veins.

I realize it's a pandemic. That science changes. That new data comes along. Just wish the science people were just a little more sciency.

I strongly suspect there will be a point where the non vaccinated just won't be allowed cross - neither side wants you. The whole home quarantine / quarantine hotel song and dance was just a stop gap until vaccinations became readily available.

We're moving into the carrot and stick phase now. Want to travel freely like before? Get your shot.

Don't want to get the shot?

Fine. Here's a list of the stuff you can't do anymore.

Agreed with @bakaboy

AZ only…no wait you can mix….no wait you shouldn’t mix….wait they’re identical….we prefer this….or maybe that….

Like eff….the message changes each time the supply changes. Frustrating as F. I’m sticking with AZ.

Next year I’ll take Pfizer. We know this ain’t going away and will be most likely like the flu.

I'm hoping that because they're both MRNA, that Pfizer and Moderna truly are interchangeable...I tried looking online for a phamacy with Pfizer, but couldn't find any, and I'm supposed to go get my second dose on Friday...my brother and sister got their second dose today, same situation (1st dose Pfizer, 2nd Moderna) so I'll see how they are in a day or two...

I agree with everything you said up until sticking with AZ.

The science, NACI aside, seems very clear that taking a MRNA as your second shot offers far better levels of protection.

Additionally, I'm not 100% sure it's even an option anymore - I thought I'd heard that AZ was not being dosed (both first and second) strictly to those who can't medically take an MRNA for some reason. Could be wrong there.

But on the topic of messaging, yeah, it's been a mess and has without doubt undermined confidence - I've seen it first hand. Despite all that it's downright impressive that we're reaching the levels of vaccination we are.

Agreed @PrivatePilot the messaging is ‘take the first one you can’ but ‘we prefer you take mRNA’ …

so do I wait? Or do I jab AZ tomorrow into me at 12:00?

All I want is CONSISTENT messaging. Nothing more.

Back to Brian P's analysis (it was for shot 1 but I think reasonably applies to shot 2) is if you can get AZ tomorrow but have to wait weeks for MRNA, you are probably better with AZ. A single shot of AZ is not very effective against Delta.
