If you draw a line straight south from Pelee Island, to latitude 28,
you find the fine city of Sarasota FL, where I live. I have lived many years
in Toronto and visit it approximately every year, but not 2020 nor 2021.

Make it through Elsa ok?

So, Delta is taking over in many states.

Also - we may see a 3rd 'recommended' dose for certain demographic locally...similar to what Israel is doing

CLOSE THE BORDER!!!!!

Well, I know that was tongue in cheek, but I was also just reading another article about how bad the vaccination rates are across a cluster of southern US states. The Bible Belt.

It’s going to be an interesting few months ahead watching as delta does it’s thing. If it all goes well regardless of vaccination rates in the 40% range across many of those states, we’ll, it bodes well for us in the months ahead.

The biggest risk now is someone in these areas breeding a new / worse variant.

So, Delta is taking over in many states. States that don’t have anywhere close to our level of vaccination, and in many cases are now full-on YOLO when it comes to precautions.

I guess we can stand back and watch now and see how it goes for them.

I'm hearing anecdotally about hospitals in Missouri seeing high demand: Missouri hospital turns some COVID-19 cases away

But it doesn't seem to be reflected in case numbers: Missouri COVID: 626,126 Cases and 10,114 Deaths - Worldometer

Sure, there's an increase (2.5 times higher over the last month) but the number of cases is a fraction of what it was in the Nov-Dec 2020 peak.

What's going on? Deniers/antivaxxers not seeking treatment until they have no choice (i.e. the real number of infections is much higher)?

The number of deaths is still remaining low ... but given the time lag, the onset of delta variant may not be felt yet.

Even though the total percentage vaccinated is lower than average, it would still be the elderly folks with the highest vaccination rates.

We already have the Lambda variant from peru in canada... its never going to end in a todays global economy.

Never gonna end car crashes either, but it doesn’t mean we stop wearing seat belts and try to minimize the effects if one happens anyways.

Anyhow, another relevant story about the US’s risks right now.

30% vaccination rates in over 1000 counties across many states is useless against the variants.

U.S. heading for 'dangerous fall' with surge in delta Covid cases and return of indoor mask mandates

My invisible friend will protect me

My invisible friend will protect me

Sadly many believe that.

We have a few friends from a state that’ll remain unnamed (but is in this mostly unvaccinated area) on Facebook from a past cruise. Nice people, they were a ton of fun on the ship, however firmly in the “God will protect us!” category about all things Covid for the last year.

They’re against the vaccinations since Trump (their favorite guy) sowed doubt, and since Biden says the shots are a great thing, of course they’re bad.

They just both posted on Facebook a few weeks ago about both having Covid. Lots of though and prayers comments followed.

They’ve recovered, but no word on FB about God having failed them. Funny how that never happens. Now is all about how God “healed them”.

I expect to have a 3rd, 4th, and more shots as these variants continue.

This will become the same as the continually evolving flu with booster shots required each year. Many will die, as with the flu, but many will be vaccinated and be fine.

I’d just prepare for a lifetime of shots, frequency to be dependent on science of course.

I wonder how these people reconcile that Trump and a lot of the right wing talking heads that spread doubt have received the vaccine

You don't know the stock response? god (I refuse to capitalize that hooey) works in mysterious ways.

Minor digging finds that MDPI doesn't have a great reputation, with adequacy of peer-review for what they publish being an apparent weakness.

You're getting criticism of the links that you post because you only post links to questionable content. Do that, and it's going to be questioned. And since you asked ... here is where I am coming from.

Just because numbers someone wrote in a publication are accurate doesn't mean they aren't being used in a misleading manner.

From that article: "Received: 2 June 2021 / Revised: 19 June 2021 / Accepted: 21 June 2021 / Published: 24 June 2021"

There is NO FREAKING WAY that proper peer review for something like that, including editing of revisions and so forth, can be completed in 17 days (from the 2nd to the 19th). In journals having proper peer review (Lancet, NEJM, etc) this takes months. Because coronavirus is progressing faster than that, a lot of papers are published as pre-prints (before peer review) but they clearly state this.

In the very article that you linked to, right near the top, is a big yellow box "Expression of concern" with today's date on it, with a link to another document.

Here's where that leads: Expression of Concern: Walach et al. The Safety of COVID-19 Vaccinations—We Should Rethink the Policy. Vaccines 2021, 9, 693 - Download the PDF file and read it.

The "expression of concern" is obviously incomplete and to be updated later (says that right in the text) ... but it's indicative that someone with much better qualifications than any of us, is in the process of officially objecting to the content of that article ... as they should. The article in question was only published on 24th June ... people outside of the group involved in the paper and what scant peer-review it had, have barely had time to react.

I will give MDPI credit for at least providing an avenue for content to be questioned ... but proper peer-review by people with appropriate qualifications ought to catch that before it ever gets published.

I just remembered this earlier discussion and decided to follow up on it. The originally-quoted paper has been retracted.

"The authors were asked to respond to the claims, but were not able to do so satisfactorily. The authors were notified of the retraction and did not agree." ... probably means those authors are now on the crackpots list ...

That paper's author, Harald Walach, also has another problematic paper in the Journal of the American Medical Association. While that journal seems reputable, the paper has a bunch of holes in it as well.

The comments section for that letter are interesting. Peer review at work.
