TMP Labour Day Weekend

Thanks to all the riders for lapping so I can take the photos, and a big thanks to the riders from Monday's lapping for respecting this still track day noob :)

What bike were you riding on Monday?

Hmmm first Pirelli will be last Pirelli.
Guesses on why it did this ????
Looked like this after 1 session. My Bridgestone never did this.

My D211 were doing this at TMP this year as well (first year I have ran here). Then went and ran at Mosport (same pressure off the warmers, essentially the same ambient temp) and the tear went away and the tires looked great. Put a new set on, went to TMP, same thing happened (tear). Then went to Calabogie, ran the same pressure off the warmers and by the end of the day the tires looked better yet again. So last time at TMP I ran a lower pressure, got more heat in the tires and the tear was not there. I am only running 1:21's at TMP and it seemed at that pace I just couldn't keep the heat required in the tires I can at other tracks and would get a tear that looks just like this pic above. It could be suspension as some guys have mentioned, for me it was dropping the tire a couple PSI that worked for TMP.

This may be right....looks like pics of "cold tearing" on google. MCN article here: http://www.motorcyclenews.com/MCN/P.../nov1510-why-are-tyres-yearing-after-10-maps/

Got me scratching my head now. This seems to be a bit of a dark art to getting this right.

This guy is saying it is due to over-inflation and the carcas of the tire not deforming and generating enough inner heat.

Based on what you said about running about 29 PSI hot, I think this is probably not your issue. Try stiffening your suspension first....if that doesn't work, drop a cpl PSI (hot) next. My feeling is you are simply overworking the rear tire at nominal tire temps. I don't think you're too hot or too cold, just over working it by being squat down on it for too long.

Are you qualified to give suspension tuning advice?

I run Calabogie with lots of high and low speed compression in the rear. I back it off for TMP. This is advice I was given by someone who knows and it seems to work. I also adjust my front for TMP. My "default" suspension setting is for Calabogie. For other tracks I always adjust. I also keep a note of what times I run with what suspension settings.

You can't really take your bike from track to tack and expect to run exactly the same suspension set up.

Here are the photos I took from Saturday, be kind I'm in no means a 'pro' at photography I just 'point and shoot' lol

There are lots so here is the link:

Thanks for the pics, better to have pics then not :P

you had a couple of fast guys tell you it was setup issues, fix that before you continue to search for other issues
i thought it was too, i ran 2 days at bogie in yellow group, stayed fairly competitive, and that tire had zero tearing on it after two days there, went to tmp and did a tire in. i was at tmp on sunday and i was noticing the dunlop kept growing through the day, i had to keep airing it down and i started being easier on the throttle coming out of turns and the slight amount of tearing i caused in the morning started to clean up. i also remember last time out i checked the pressures at lunch and they were around 25-26 psi hot, and thats when the tire was tearing. so im chalking it up to a pressure issue and me being ham fisted.

sounds like the exact same scenario as me. and as i mentioned above my tire kept growing, it was weird, i got there in the morning, dropped the rear to 21 cold, put on the warmers, ran a session, came back in the pits, checked the pressure right away, tire was at 26 psi, dropped it to 23, and two more times it managed to go to 25 psi, final session i came in and the tire stayed at 23 finally and the bike felt good and the tire wasnt tearing at that point. checked my cold pressures the next morning and the tire was at 16. its weird because its a uk ntec d211 and i was told they only grow 2 psi from cold to hot.

Why are you not taking your temperatures off the warmers? and then comparing them to temperatures right off the track?

Rear should have started 23 Hot off the warmers I was told by Dave Noble

Anyways, knock yourself out and good luck

I agree, if i was really chasing seconds/racing, I will however eat a piece of humble pie and admit I simply dont know enough about how to set up my suspension for different tracks quite yet. I had my setup done by someone who really knows what hes doing as what he described as an 'aggressive but neutral enough' setup. I just work with what he gave me because as I said, i just dont know enough to intelligently make changes. I am pretty sure my TTX rear is set with close to full preload and 4 clicks out on both rebound and compression. Chances are this isnt perfect everywhere....but i run it everywhere.

Yeah, I was at the end with my buddy on the Triumph. I was on the R6
Thought so, I was pitted next to you (kind of) I was with the group, four of us that was next down the line from you.

Thanks for the sequence shots. I like how half of the album is of me lol. Glad you had fun on Monday, sorry I couldn't make it but we will arrange one more day before the season is out that we can go together.

Sweet man.

Were you to my left, with the group of guys?

If so your one buddy almost watched me highside one of the last sessions lol

No problem! Glad you like them :) and I still have all that video as well! Haha

No problem about Monday, we'll try to get one more day in this year. If not you can push me to continue tracking next year.

If you are facing the track then ya to the left. You were talking a bit with a couple of my buddies but I never had a chance to say what's up as I was talking with a bunch of friends that came to hang out. Did you almost highside in front of one of them?

No problem! Glad you like them :) and I still have all that video as well! Haha

Push you to...nope, encourage you to...yep. I don't want to push anyone to do anything but you enjoy it so have at it :)

^^^ ATTS you're correct, 'push' was the wrong word to use. Encourage sounds much better! :)
