The "Official" Watch Thread and all Things Horological

I thought about the kids garmin watches (more so I could track them when out and about) but the kids watches don't have GPS. Useless.
We might get something like that for them when they’re older.

For now…it stays in the house and is my sons big boy watch.

I had one that looked like that years ago. Bought it right at King & Yonge for $10. Wore it to work for a couple of years until it crapped out.

Making due with the Gruen when I wear one, until the others get fixed. It needs a new crystal and a cleaning by the looks of it.

My sweat eats through the leather bands, so I managed to score some rare skinny metal ones.

I also have one in need of some crystal love. A Girard-Perregaux gold-filled (sadly not solid). I found this one at an auction. Not incredibly valuable but a cool watch to break out occasionally.

These are the only two watches that I actually wear. Left is a Marathon Pilot Navigator and right is a Seiko SKX009.

The Marathon is neat because all the lume is tritium tubes. Just got it back from Marathon after a hand replacement and service. Also on its second bezel. Really cool watch but the built quality is not great.

Still waiting on all my parts for the SKX from Singapore.

Nice, love SKXs and even the new sport 5s. My first 'real watch' was one I ended up modifying that was stolen with our belongings in Greece.
The aftermarket for them have gotten more insane since then, just took a look recently thinking about getting one again and there's now custom cases for them and I think I even saw a decorated movement.

really like that Marathon watch! That's actually what my buddy posted, something similar to that watch.

I had the automatic back from when they were not sold to the public (or not easily sold). I let my youngest play with it one day, never to be seen again. We think it went in the garbage. Letting the kids handle watches after that stopped.... I bought a beat up quartz version, but it is not the same.

I let my son (stupidly) touch my Apple Watch. Within 5 seconds it was smashed on the kitchen tile. My fault as he was 2.

I still have that watch and use it for my walks. But lesson learned.

At the end of the day, aren't expensive watches just vanity pieces? How are they different than a 5-carat pendant, Lakeshore Road address, or a Vstrom?

I'm not a fan of counterfeiters, mu I don't begrudge anyone who buys a look-alike so they can pretend to be a baller.
In the end counterfeit is counterfeit and these guys counterfeit everything (same people), there are even counterfeit Swatches and Apple watches. They pollute the market at all levels including used and regular people get scammed or hurt. Organized crime is also a big player. So they absolutely should be begrudged 100%. This is not like costume jewellery.

In the end there is no excuse, if someone really likes the "style" and must have it, guess what, you can buy a quality Seiko that is an homage to the Submarniner for less than a passable counterfeit Rolex. Same thing for pretty much any high end watch, legit brands make homages if you want the look but it will say Seiko, Casio or Timex, or ???... on the dial). Owning a counterfeit, watch, bag ,whatever speaks volumes about a person's integrity and smarts as the homage will be cheaper and way better made than a passable counterfeit. There is actually no need and legit homages can be had for less money. Of course people have all kinds on invalid excuses why.... I have heard them all when they are called out.

The irony is, the average person could care less about watches and has no idea what they cost (nice Roles, is that a $500 watch, never heard of Patek, AP is that made by Timex???). The small percentage that could be impressed may spot the fake usually by the wearers body language. So most people have no clue and are not impressed much, those that might be impressed there is a risk of being caught and judged. For some, personal integrity just does not matter.

This came yesterday (the watch winder not the 70s Omega).... Cheap one from Amazon, I will see how it works.

I normally don't use winders, I also have one of those four watch fancy (but cheap) wood case ones that half of it stopped working and I lost the PS that at this point I might just give that one away (anyone interested???). I figured I will give this one a try and might buy a second, third... for a few watches that are day-date and with PITA quick set. This Omega is a very tired 1020 calibre and it has problems not worth fixing, it runs fine but using the quick set, it feels like it will explode and take out an eye--too bad I love this one.

I have my dads old watch, it’s got 37 jewels. Going to give it to my son someday

If I get a chance I’ll dig it out of the safe and post up a picture,

It’s 70 or 80 years old

I stopped wearing a watch for years, simply because I found it pointless.
I also found most people that cared about watches to be insufferable. (sorry, my experience)

Now I have a Garmin Fenix 7X. I like function, this watch has that in droves.

The upside to watches are they can help you pick up who is who in a meeting full of strangers. When you say something that makes the guy in the really nice rose gold watch go grey, you know the project has his money on the line. He was too far away to pick out watch but it may have been a Nautilus, When his watch is worth more than your house, you have some concept of power imbalance.

There was someone here that bought some nice watches off a Russian site. I was too chicken to put up my credit card on that site, but now have another cc for just such purposes.

Although supporting any Russian company now...

I was one of them. I purchased one before the war (Sturmanskie Gagarin, second from the right on the bottom). I used paypal. I do collect Soviet/Russian watches as one of my interests but they are not getting very much wrist time these days and I am not purchasing any new ones for the foreseeable future (even from non-Russian dealers).

The one on the far bottom right is the Sea.Gull, not Russian.... the rest are Soviet or Russian.

Rated for 700m. The way it is designed the higher the pressure the tighter it seals. Pretty sure the movement can be serviced with a pry bar and a small ball-peen hammer.

Not even sure why I bought it (other than it is a relic of the cold war, and to be fair it has gone way up in value), I even have the original instruction booklet--eight pages!--all in Russian. If I run into Arni, Sly or anyone with a Panerai I can freely comment on their puny girly watch.

Garmin is my Right Hand watch (can't live without knowing your HRV, right?), Left Hand is for the normal legible watches. I must be very insufferable LOL

Put on my Blue Coral for today's post.
Quality "office desk diver" :)
But for the record this watch on it's rubber strap was down at both Niagra I and Niagra II shipwrecks in Tobermorry a few years back - 90ft max at Niagra II so water resistance was tested :)
