The "Official" Watch Thread and all Things Horological

Just the motion of pushing water across the watch while swimming can affect some watches , running water from a tap can push water into a non waterproof watch.

I was 15 when I was first licensed as diver ( I think Jacque Cousteau ran the class it was that long ago) and I bought a Squale dive watch. It cost me a months wages , 12yrs later I took it to a shop to get some Lume replaced in the minute hand, 1st time I dove it flooded, idiot repair guy did not put it back togther well. No warranty, tiny print on his work order said "may loose water resistance" . I felt bad and could not afford to replace it at the time.
Anybody selling a white face Squale dive watch , hit me up .
What happened to the watch? Tossed? In a bin of broken dreams? Not impressed by that watch guy.

It rolled around in a glove box for a few years , then I just lost track of it. For sentimental reasons I'd like another Squale watch. My 20's were a bit turbulent , a lot of things went astray in that decade.

so now because of this thread I'm looking at people's watches at work...buddy has this nice Kenneth Cole.

About $200 or so. Very nice and slick (and affordable) watch.
Most watch snobs dislike fashion watches but if you like it and the price is not crazy.... One word of caution that most collectors will give, they have a box of like watches that are never worn.... I know I do.

Here is one of those "Retro" Casio which are very very popular right now (this version has a larger screen for my older eyes) - cost me whopping $28CAD on Black Friday sale. Does everything what you need from the watch and lasts 10years on battery - disposable, although I give it away everytime I travel abroad, helps to keep collection rotation :)

Those Casios are iconic and very inexpensive!

Hell, I've got some decent (though not exceptional) watches in that box. Stuff I was gifted with good intent but not for me. Like this one for instance. Tissot quartz chrono. 10 bar, plated, press back, sapphire. It's pretending to be fancy. Because it was a gift, I will keep it for the memories.

After this thread I went to dig into the comments on that beautiful Omega X Swatch that was referenced...wow the hate for those watches was real.

- too expensive
- materials are too cheap
- wouldn't be caught dead with it
- should be $70

etc etc.

Yea man, I'm not a man for brand allegiance and all that crap. But, It diminished the brand's allure in my eyes since they did the mass market appeal with their cross platform with Swatch. Of course this what happens with corporate ownership and it's about making money, so I understand their motive. However, I will not be buying another Omega. Most likely will sell mine soon too. It's the same thing that happened with BMW and putting M stickers on everything and everywhere.

Was asked in the other thread about Panerai's business practices. Here's the top 3 articles about it but a quick summary:
-they were promoting social media posts of people wearing fake panerai's, when they were told about this, they tried to get the people who reported it banned and continued to repost fakes on their social media.
-lying about movements, claims to be in-house when they were not, then media outlets and themselves changing the appearance in photos to hide the movement.

long but interesting reads. detailed investigative journalism.

On a related note. Check out the movements this guy sells (escapement series are roughly applicable to this thread). Some of them are pretty cool. Yeah, they are more clocks than watches but being able to see escapements work easily is pretty awesome.

@killvino , thankyou for thiose links and clarifiaction. You hear ALL kinds of stuff , fakes by the chinese, fakes by the manuafcturers , now there are about 200 'watch assemblers' trying to link to an historical event or a brand , the Royal Navy tribute watch, D day watch, french commando watch and of course Panerai the Italian navy watch (not so it seems) .
So much to learn and so much to look out for

There used to be a time when the fakes were obvious...not so anymore. That said, I don't buy or wear it, cause what's the point? Rather rock my Casio F91 all day and all night.

This is my concern with going to a used / private seller...spotting the fakes.
