The "Official" Watch Thread and all Things Horological

That's a lot of dials and number. That is definately not the KLR of the watch world.
Speedmaster is perfect for a first and second post.

you have to remember the watches like the speedmaster were / are a 'computer' for the wrist, speed , trajectory, distance all could be figured out . Lap times , split times , longitude .
GPS has made almost all of it redundant , but if your ever in a space capsule and the system goes wonky , you may want a speedmaster.

so now because of this thread I'm looking at people's watches at work...buddy has this nice Kenneth Cole.

About $200 or so. Very nice and slick (and affordable) watch.

I hate it. It fails the first test. I should be able to easily tell the time with a glance. Too much chaos on the dial and that makes it hard to read while adding little. I have one with an open heart, that's pretty much the only piece you can see moving anyway. The rest is visually static. Mine would be better without the stupid 24h dial but the price was right. Obviously dress watch so one of the few I own with no lume and crap water resistance.

EDIT:
I like the 4R39 much better than the 7S26 in the Seiko 5's. This watch has a nice bulbous case. Hard to photograph, looks nice in person. Like many modern watches, a display back for times you want to look at the mechanism.

Here's a hideous gold plated version from the side.

Here is one of those "Retro" Casio which are very very popular right now (this version has a larger screen for my older eyes) - cost me whopping $28CAD on Black Friday sale. Does everything what you need from the watch and lasts 10years on battery - disposable, although I give it away everytime I travel abroad, helps to keep collection rotation :)

Turns out mine's not very 'Water Resistant' as the WR would imply...got it wet once and the whole thing fogged up on the inside. Disappointed, but happy it cleared itself up.

5 bar is pretend water resistance. That is washing hands and showering but I wouldn't trust it swimming (floating could be fine but dynamic pressure when swimming or playing with kids could let water in). Hell, that dress seiko I posted is 5 bar rated.

this one good for shower no más, but if you do need to dive with the watch - just upgrade to a cheapest G-shock and you are good to go! :)
or any Seiko diver will do if you need a real legible auto...

Totally agree, but I challenge you find a better good quality 5bar resistance for 30ish CAD! :)

I have a couple non dive watches , but 90% of the time I'm wearing a dive watch. Not sure how but I could be in a desert , in a tuxedo, and end up fixing an outboard motor under water.

I've picked up a g-shock for that before. Obviously not msrp. Timex Ironman Triathlon used to be in that ballpark and is 20 bar rated but they seem to have crept up to about $70 now.

Never had a tuxedo, lol, so no problems for me to have G-shock digital watches on my wrist all the time.
Here is my VERY old Gulfman (all metal parts are Titanium to resist sea rust) - used it a lot when lived ashore to know time for tides... This one solar and still kicking after so many years (ZERO maintenance) ....

Just the motion of pushing water across the watch while swimming can affect some watches , running water from a tap can push water into a non waterproof watch.

I was 15 when I was first licensed as diver ( I think Jacque Cousteau ran the class it was that long ago) and I bought a Squale dive watch. It cost me a months wages , 12yrs later I took it to a shop to get some Lume replaced in the minute hand, 1st time I dove it flooded, idiot repair guy did not put it back togther well. No warranty, tiny print on his work order said "may loose water resistance" . I felt bad and could not afford to replace it at the time.
Anybody selling a white face Squale dive watch , hit me up .
