I like watches , and i am an insufferably prick . Don’t start a converse about wether vintage double guns with Damascus barrels should be used with modern smokeless powder .
And those people wearing white after Labour Day .
Sweet Angel of death , take me now .

Whatever it is, I'm just glad that the crypto bros are out bankrupt and the normalcy is coming back into the market. The Rolex dealer at Yorkdale called few of my friends to see if they wanted to purchase the things they had in back order at MSRP. And looking at the grey market the prices are back to pre pandemic levels for the most part.

NOT a watch baller here. Last watch was a $12.00 Timex from their warehouse in Markham. Died about 7 - 8 years ago. Doesn't matter. I'm retired and time no longer has any relevance. My week is six Saturdays, followed by a Sunday. 🥸

I posted this in another thread but this is the official thread so here it is again. This is an amazing read about building the first accurate chronometers. It's astounding how long they thought that the answer was in the astronomy.

On a price VS quality and craftsmanship pocket watches are a less expensive collectors hobby. Old high end pocket watches tend to sell for around their precious metal value. Not a fashionable item but if you like finely crafted small mechanisms and such they just might be the ticket.
never thought about this. but that would actually make great sense with having a smartwatch. no need to choose between mechanical vs tech and also not draw looks with a watch on each wrist.
any examples or recommendations to look at?

On another note, in line with @killvino where would one start looking for used watches outside of Kijiji?

there's quite a few places for watches depending on your level of trust and risk:
reddit, facebook groups, canwatchco forums, and there's a few reputable consignment used dealers on instagram as well.
stay away from watchfinder canada, their prices are inflated.
edit: forgot to mention chrono24.ca if you can find good pricing but remember anything from outside Canada will probably get taxed.

Chrono24.ca is one of the better options online, specially if you buy from a dealer on there with good ratings but very feew great deals cost wise. Ebay is the wild west, you REALLY need to buy the seller not the watch, I have not tried it but they are offering a verification service these days where it is shippied to their jeweller to be verified. Avoid anything that is too good to be true. FBMP and Kijiji have a tonne of counterfeits, I roll though and report as many as I see, whack-a-mole. Forget estate auctions these days, way too many counterfeit that they have no idea is counterfeit. In the end it is why people that even own counterfeits are a huge problem as it pollutes everything and people get ripped off.

Internationally, back in the day, when I was buying more (before kids) Japan was a great source as they are an affluent society that buy new watches but used items are culturally less desirable so worth less. Sadly I think everyone has caught on, I do not see the low prices these days. Avoid India, lots of frankenwatches, avoid the usual counterfeit sources.

Some other tips....
  • Have a watchmaker on-call to verify the watch and condition when you get it.
  • Some jewellers offer verification services these days (but not for free, again scumbag people with counterfeits screwing everyone else)
  • Mentally add a service cost to your price to have the above service it.
  • Ask the seller to send a picture with a specific time. Most pics will have hands at 10 and 2, a specific time will tell you the pics are likely the actual watch and not pics they grabbed from the net.
  • Anything looks fishy, move on to another one.
  • ALWAYs buy the seller not the watch! Too good to be true likely is.
In general pocket watches pose less risk than wrist watches counterfeit wise BUT as they are generally older so replacement parts may be hard (or impossible) to get and fully expect service costs as it will likely need it.

Last summer there was a million dollar Lamborghini driving around Toronto with “wtchfndr” license plate on it often parked in Yorkdale. Would lead me to believe they are making grand profits.

Just like used vehicles it really burns me that they have to charge tax on a used watch that has likely changed hands multiple times. Gotta love the government getting their cut.

buy from someone private and you'll never pay taxes.
FYI almost all of the reputable used watch sellers on forums and social media will not charge you taxes.

Only problem is finding them. I'll reach out to my buddy to add me to his watch FB page.

Yes found a really good gold guy off of Facebook marketplace. Was having a 100g 14k Miami chain necklace made by a jeweler and then hopped on marketplace and found same thing for about $1000 less. Cancelled order. Basically gold price by the gram. No labour charge. Don’t know how he does it. And no tax of course.
Said he does between 20-30k a month in sales with no store front so better pricing.
