The Bad Drivers of Ontario Thread

The insurance company will likely just not try getting blood from a turnip and pay out (uninsured motorist coverage). He could be subject to a lawsuit to reimburse them, personally, but that is weighed against the likelihood of the insurer being successful in not just obtaining a judgment, but in collecting it.

Rules of fault determination state that fault can be reassessed, against the normal rules, if one of the drivers is exceeding the limit by more than 15 Kmh.

Court judgments, fines, orders of restitution, etc. survive a declaration of bankruptcy. See Section 178:

It is my understanding that the hard part is collecting after getting the judgement. Privacy laws, trusts etc

The main thing is that if someone didn't have the money for insurance, they aren't likely to have the money to satisfy the judgment anyway. Like I said, blood from a turnip.

It all depends on how much patience one has. Maybe 15 years down the road he's gotten his act together and scraped up enough for a house down payment or inherited a bundle and bam, down comes the hammer. Depending on the amount and circumstances how long does the injured party want to track the loser? Sometimes one just moves on.

My B-I-L was a eyeballs in debt loser and didn't want his mother's estate settled because his inheritance would give him assets to go after. As long as the assets were in the "Estate of...." they couldn't be touched. He had conned her into letting him use the house as long as he wanted. Fortunately my M-I-L changed the will and B-I-L screwed himself with legal bills trying to fight the new will. The executor would have been hung out to dry for decades. I don't know what rock he found the will lawyer under that let him sit in with his mother while she dictated the terms of the first will.

This is quebec but I'm sure it happens here too. A man made $700K in two years by helping 709 people cheat on their written driving tests. How braindead (or unable to understand the language) do you have to be to pay $1000 to cheat on the written test?

Have mentioned before but when I was writing cvor exam I noticed girl in hijab doing her G1 I think it was in arabic on the computer and pretty certain she had an earpiece in, cupping her ear many many times.

Before Covid, walking into a bank wearing a mask was extremely suspicious and that was expanded to women wearing burkas and full face coverings. With various types of masks being worn in banks, has it increased the number of hold ups? I'm not hearing of robbery epidemics.

That said, there are always a few that cheat. On religious grounds things get complex. Sikhs don't have to wear helmets. Amish in the USA don't have their pictures taken, making passports difficult.

A Muslim group in Quebec wanted to experience a maple syrup boil with the traditional pork and beans lunch. They asked for the beans to be made without pork which means it's no longer traditional recipe that the farm has had for a century.

Does the driver's test in a foreign language have to be backed up by every law in Canada being available in every language to prevent collisions? Can you get the driver's handbook in Arabic?

That said, how many English from birth drivers know it's illegal to make a left turn into the right lane or where to stop at an intersection?

Drive defensively. The situation is beyond any hope of correction.

Turning left to go right????

I've always wondered how you can take a drive test in a language that isn't on our signage?

"Computerized knowledge tests are available in up to 28 languages (depending on licence class), with full audio support, on a first-come-first-served basis. Paper-based G1 knowledge tests are available in 20 languages at DriveTest Centre"

Imo, if you can't pass the test in English or french, you aren't ready to drive in Ontario. It is supposed to be a privilege. I can't read Arabic or Japanese and have no idea what the signs say if I was there. Being able to pass a test in English would prove almost nothing. More government pandering stupidity.

To be fair, North America is the only place that doesn't allow this because of the "turn right on red" rule. A mate told me about this before I came here and saved me having to learn the hard way 😆

The real problem is that it isn't ALWAYS illegal.

I didn't see this one in the handbook. Maybe it should be on the written test.

Do you stop at........

a) the first line

b) the second line

c) both lines

d) a, b, and c are all wrong or partly wrong, so take a different road.

In an abrupt stop that guy would end up as 200 pounds of cube steak, going through that mesh at the front of the box.
At least go feet first. You'd be soup in a rollover but a normal rear end crash wouldn't be awful. Given how heavy this van is, gut may be ok face forward unless they hit an immovable object. A normal vehicle will get punted.

Head first. I'm thinking the tonne of flooring that would also be shifting forwards, if the van rear ended someone.

Jeez, maintenance costs money! How do you expect me to make a profit?!

I'm reminded of a guy I sat next to in traffic court. He was scolded by the JP for using his blackberry in court while waiting to be called up. I recall clearly that he put it away muttering "how am i supposed to make a living under these conditions."

10 minutes later he was drinking a bottle of water and the clerk caught him. JP threw him out and said he'd be called in when it's his turn. I didn't stick around to watch, but I imagine he got the book thrown at him.
