dankyyz: What I like best about your posts is that you manage to insult your own intelligence. While that's not difficult to do, you do it so very well that it surprises me how high you have reached with only double digit testing. Bravo, sir.

Just found this on you tube. I love the part where they say the population of Greeks in Toronto was 3000 at that time and they owned 33% of all business' in Toronto!!!

Who cares what it was that they owned. It's still 1/3 of all business in Toronto. Pretty impressive. Especially considering how small their population was at that time.

they owned 1/3 of the cafes and shoe shine businesses... not 1/3 of all business in toronto big difference.

Must have heard it wrong. Either way it is impressive. Lucky not sure what your getting at though.

Edit:Just watched again and maybe before dumbing down what I was saying, maybe you two should have re watched it as well. The Greeks at that time only represented 0.5% of the Toronto population. They owned 35% of the cafes and restaurants, most of the shoe shine places and many fruit stands. Like I said impressive. If you guys don't see that or choose not to see it, that is not my prob.

Are you sure they were all Greeks? Might there have been a few or more than a few Macedonians included in with those numbers? The white folk in Toronto back then probably wouldn't have been able to tell the difference. Come to think of it, many still can't today until the sides separate in a brawl. :D

never said it wasn't impressive, just putting it in perspective. i'm not sure what percentage shoeshine, fruit stand and cafes make up of all of toronto's business but if thats all that greeks did... they were underrepresented in other markets. how many of the greeks were in the police force, in the banking industry, construction, military, etc at the time.

They came here with a dream: start with nothing, save your pennies shining shoes until you can open up your own restaurant and send your kids to university to become professors.
