Laid-off? GTAM Members looking-out.....???

I'm losing my job too. They gave me notice that they're getting rid of my shift....
Due to down sizing and restructuring...

The stupid part? I work for the largest banking company in Canada that was one of the few to turn out profit even during the recession... and my branch is understaffed!
a lot of them are using this as a pretext to cut down staff for no reason. Sometimes just for selfish reasons, so they can work a smaller group of employees. What a shame

Yeah... thats exactly it...
Smaller group of employee's = less benefits paid out.

Worth a shot.. been out of work for a little while now and I've been trying so hard to find a new job. My wife is expecting our first child in 2-3 weeks which makes things even worse financially. Anyways, here it goes.

I have 2-3 years legal and administrative experience. I'm looking for any entry level admin or anything available that is not related. I'm a computer savvy and technical guy. I'm willing to branch out and try something new if its possible.

Anything will do in these tough times.

Just out of curiosity what bank did you work for?

Well, I'm a lot more desperate now than I was a few weeks ago...

After years of CPP, Income Tax, and EI deductions I am not applicable for collecting EI. It seems that I was allowed to pay into it for 12 years, earn 3 degrees in school (while working and paying out), but am not allowed to collect because I was out of country for a year furthering my education. I guess I should have had better foresight into leaving the country before a recession... Not being able to secure a proper, long term job has screwed me.

I took a contract job this summer upon my return to Canada and only worked 540 hours. I went through the EI application process, was able to lodge 2 claims, and have been turned down after a month of waiting. I am convinced this system DOES NOT work. Why the hell should I pay into something I'll never get anything out of? Honestly, I felt ashamed to have had to apply in the first place, but now I'm astonished at the process.

I honestly think I'm going to return my SIN card, relinquish my Canadian Citizen status, and declare myself a Freeman on the Land. I no longer want this country and our elected officials to govern me. I can't see any reason to pay into this anymore, without ever getting support when I need it.

Anybody want to hire me for anything now? I've essentially used up my last bit of savings on this months rent and am living on $40 until I find something to sustain me... So much for our socialist backstop!

How do you have 3 degrees? what did you do in them? Why are you blaming Canada for? The fact you did three degrees that are pretty much useless to you right now?
The system does not work for YOU... doesn't mean it doesn't work.... nobody told you to go out and get 3 degrees (in god knows what) and spend on your money... maybe you should have done a basic course in financial planning?

You might want to check out the day labour places like Manpower. Years ago, I was working part time at an engine rebuilding shop while in school and the boss brought in some day labourers to pour cement for a new floor. With the amount of renovation going on now, I am sure that labourers are needed. I hope you get back on your feet soon.

You might want to check out Saskatchewan if you have any sort of speciality. What were your degrees in? I have done a few resumes for people on this site. If it helps, I will take a look at yours (for free).

easy man, most people don't have much money after paying for university.......actually mostly have student loans. He might have got his bachelors followed by a masters and a doctorate.

sad times in the maritimes/west coast too.
i,ve been in edmonton for 4 yrs now. ive seen the slow down majorly.i personally made up to 1300 bucks a day.thought there would be no end.times were good but the bottom fell out.the cost of living and the now paid wages make this place like most other provinces.difficult to live.its cutthroat here aswell.the use to be shortage of workers is no more.now there is less work for people present.
when i first got here they would let anybody do anything, experience or not,and pay top wages at that.now you need a degree to pump gas.there was a time here when employers were happy enough you showed up for work, signing bonuses posted everywhere.you could quit one job walk across the street and get another.not no more.
the big boom is over here. unless your into oil and gas or you work for cheap.:(

I found a pretty neat site. www.indeed.ca. It compiles all job postings from the internet (rather than searching them all individually). Just put in the job title you are looking for and the city/province.

Good luck!

ok add me to the list

Controller in manufacturing company.

after 15 + years "restucturing" = replace with cheaper
CGA 40 years in acounting filed
