I'm OUT!

Ditto to this^^^. Your life; your decision. People need to simply respect that.

My Gooodness! Some of you ignorant people, with your judgemental, condescending attitudes...makes me ashamed to ride a motorcycle sometimes. Hope to never meet some of you on the road.
if you do it will be a very short encounter ... ;-)

Out? You were never all in then.

Good luck to you though. To a degree, I admire anyone who recognizes and acts on the assertion that perhaps they might have gotten in over their head on two wheels. We are not all equal with our skills in day to day life. Some of us can control a bike (which includes an almost 6th sense for anticipating what can go wrong at any given second) with Rossi-like finesse. Others, might be a death trap looking for a place to happen, yet can perform the brain surgery when it all goes wrong, with an entirely different kind of finesse.

Motorcycle's risk can be taken control of by the rider. Not totally of course cuz things do happen even to the best of us, but they are not nearly as inherently dangerous as the average ignorant person would attempt to have you believe.

But I do know that the odds of **** happening increase exponentially the more time you spend in built up areas with street light controlled intersections and among grossly incompetent road users who could care less for anyone on a bike...or anyone else for that matter..

Again, all the best to you.

Oh you're going? I didn't even know you were here!

exactly, my first thought was who are you?

as for riding track only... i couldn't do that, track and street are 2 different beasts, one involves focusing on the next corner and nothing else, the other requires taking in every thing around you...

how many tracks have scenic vistas of lakes and oceans that you can admire, wait, even if they have them you don't have time to admire them as you hit corners at 140-160+ km an hour

I'm with Dr. Manhattan on the OP's decision. As a new rider, married and with kids I too feel concerned about the volume of accidents. However, I am bitten and love the new world. Good luck mate and enjoy your life.
Congrats for hanging the helmet up. If your head and heart are not into it, you shouldn't be riding. And it's just downright ridiculous how a lot of you just egg this guy on. He came on to make a post about quitting motorcycles because of danger we have on the highways. If anything this brings to light the people that do exactly this. Why do you have to wait for a tragic accident to happen to yourself before you realize the dangers that are associated with this ?. It's like playing Russian Roulette and having people tell you your a pussy because you pulled one trigger and realized the risks are not worth the reward. We all read what happens in the Fallen Riders section, and we all post RIP or GWS, but when someone decides they don't want to attempt to make it in that part of the forum it's all " OH YOU PU$$Y !!, grow a pair !, live your life !!. If anything I'm proud of you for being able to walk away from an enjoyable, yet dangerous way of life.

LOL perfect!

This thread should end right there...with the perfect anthem.

Seriously...5 pages? Come on guys....come on.
what are you new around here? Lexminator and Chelsys was over 50 pages each

I sold my bike and I'm out of the scene. Please ride safe out there. Too many people dying lately!!

I don't get it. You've been on the site since 2008 and made a total of 80+ posts and you feel so much a part of this place you need to tell us you're quitting riding. And it's not because your frightened, its because you have too much to lose? Wow.

Good luck to you.

It takes both kinds...the riders....and the visitors.

Visitors buy a bike, and ride for a while. Then for fear, boredom, or waning interest, they get out. Permanently.

I have been run over, crashed from my own stupidity (target fixation), had family members maimed in crashes, had many close friends injured in crashes, and 4 friends die on bikes.....and whenever I am not riding, I am thinking about riding. I am a rider.

Well, op knows better why he quit. for me the thought of quitting scares the ***** out of me.

I respect your decision to quit riding. I don't respect your attention whoring motive/ decision to make a thread about it. Mod's please perma ban this guy, so he doesn't lose anymore of his precious time on GTAM.

Coles notes: "He should use the words I want him to use to say the same thing, as long as it's nothing negative about motorcycling".

Got it, thanks Uncle Rick.

Hey uncle fastar, now I got it, you are the idiot, maybe you should join him.

If your not comfortable then good for you! You certainly need confidence to ride but i have seen that taken too far as well. Just sayin:read:

I think this has been a bad summer for road fatalities everywhere in Ontario for all types of vehicles..... despite the OPPs best efforts to take all those racers off the road. Actually going by what they said a couple of summers ago, you'd think we'd have no accidents at all. However, it has been a very good summer (once it actually started)... hence we are seeing a ton of accidents. Dunno ... maybe I'm off base, but the OPP hasn't been tooting their horn after long weekends this year.
Actually, they have been tooting their horn, most recently after the latest long weekend. Highway fatalities so far this year to the end of July are down significantly. Unfortunately it seems that motorcycles are trending hard towards the other direction, and that should be a consideration in the back of every rider's mind when they choose to hit the road on their bikes, or choose to leave that road behind completely.
As of July 31, 157 people have died in motor vehicle collisions in 2011 compare to 173 in the same period for 2010, a decrease of 9.2 percent.

Companion3,

Were you not aware that riding is dangerous before you purchased a bike, learned how to ride, etc? People that stick with it have (I would like to think) acknowledged that riding puts us into a position where cagers notice us even less, that falling down hurts more, and that we're not 'safely' enclosed within a steel cage. It's pretty obvious stuff that comes with the territory of riding.

If you want to continue riding but you're too afraid of doing so on the street, why not just start tracking exclusively? Much safer environment, and you still get to ride.

.

X2!

Why do all these people that have only been riding since 2010-2011 keep saying that this year has been the worst for accidents/deaths? I think it was worse a few years ago. Of course you are going to hear about many accidents/deaths when you are on different forums that span across north America. Also you have to remember how much the riding community has grown over the past 8-10 years. So many more people riding now and a lot of them should not even be driving a car let alone a bike. Riding is like crack to me and I am heavily addicted! Anyone who is a real rider would never give it up while still realizing and respecting all of the dangers.

Too many people dying lately? Everyone's gonna die - but motorcycles aren't in the list of causes.
Havea look at the following web site:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_causes_of_death_by_rate

Find a better excuse than others' deaths. Something more personal that you take responsibility for such as:

a) I'm a ****** rider and scared to death that I might pack it in.
b) I can't rationalize the expenses - insurance, maintenance etc., etc.
c) My bike sucks.
d) I don't live in a bike-friendly area - too much traffic, too dangerous for me - see a)

BUT:
I like riding so much, I make sure I live and ride in a bike friendly environment.
I like riding so much that the deaths of others since 1964 must have been their fault.
I like riding so much that I have nurtured a great relationship with my guardian angel!
I like riding so much that I rarely, rarely share the road with cars and other vehicles. It gets expensive, but I like riding so much that I willingly pay for it. (motels, toll roads etc.)
I like riding so much that I would never use the bike as a means of transportation.
