I am no expert here by any means - my number of posts to GTAM is a clear indication of how Newb i am!
but - i tend to see a clear common thread amongst all these recent rash of crashes -
Excessive Speed.
The Crash today on the 410 (from what i read). Smacked into the back of a Truck, both travelling in same direction??, but it appears it wasnt the initial crash that killed the rider - but, and i quote "the motorcyclist flew off and hit the pavement, causing "extensive trauma to the body". As I read this - severe road rash! What was rider wearing? Shorts and T-Shirt?
Or how about the other crash (not the off-duty Police Office - RIP) but the other rider speeding down the road and hits a left turning cager? The report specifically stated, excessive speed was involved - had the rider been going the posted speed limit, could this have been avoided? I don't know.
I feel if you are taking the risk to excessively speed in certain areas, and on certain raods, then you are taking the risk of putting your life on the line.
How about the daily riders on their 125's, 250's, 500's, or 650's sport cruisers going to work and back daily? Are they dying?
Everytime I read a news clip about a motorcycle crash - i try to find out about the bike and the scene, and its always the same.
Earlier this summer - on the Gardiner East bound. I saw 5 or 6 riders - weaving, cutting in and out of traffic from my balcony facing Gardiner West. (they were travelling East) Not 15mins later - i see the fire trucks, police, ambulance etc. I later find out one of those riders lost control, flew over the middle median, and was hit/run over by a West bound vehicle? How did he lose control? Was it because of the constant weaving? Did the rider just barely nick a car enough to lose control, did the rider lose all control themselves? The driver in the West bound lane had very little options. What do you do when you see a body flying at your car 100kph?
A friend of mine crashed his bike last season - left turning cager - just popped right out in front of him- however, because he was going the posted speed limit 40 -50kph - he was able to slow down a fraction before slamming into the front of the car and going over the hood. However, because of his speed - he walked away from it. Yah, he was bruised, and sore. But no broker bones, no road rash that peels the skin off to the bone, etc. He survived. Had he been going 100kph - things would have been a lot different.
Its extremely tragic for all these accidents this year, and it sucks its the flavour of the month for all media outlets - hence they report on everyone of them. But lets not forget about the daily riders who make it home safe every night due to their common sense riding.
Just my two cents. And for all those truly tragic accidents caused by ignorant left turning cagers.... may you all R.I.P.
