Hiring Immigrants instead of " our own people "

No graduate of U of T has ever made a mistake apparently, so clients are led to believe.

I've also read in a library that no Waterloo engineer ever made a mistake either. I have a sinking feeling that it might not be absolutely true

Dude thats true, better believe it.
Stop putting down the good name of that school :)

In my field, i have worked with many foreign born - immigrants in the mechanical engineer/skilled trade area(s).

My personal experience has been that many people do in fact lie about previous experience and do not have adequate skills to do the most basic of jobs.

I have family that also work along the same lines-- their experience is very similar.

I am at the point right now, that, if hiring someone, I will take the person that has verifiable credentials and references all other things being equal. Sure, if that makes me racist, then so be it. personal experience of myself, others in my field and even family memebers have taught me that without proven credentials, that person is not qualified.

The issue is not about racism, like many on here claim. lets assume you have two identical twin brothers, that were seperated at birth and one was born and raised and went to university in Canada, while the other was born and raised and went to unversity in (fill in blank). Regardless of their ethnic background (white/black/asian/east indian etc...) the one with Canadian experience will get the job, even if all other things are being equal.

I understand the math and metrics behind the immigration program but its insane.

Its tough for university grads to get jobs for the same reason-- no experience, so much so that many are applying for min wage jobs/entry level types of posistions just to get into a company. With this new program, those kids who have Canadian education (regardless of ethnic background-- takes racsim out of the equation) may very well be passed up for jobs due to the employer getting a 10K tax credit for hiring a new immigrant.

Simply, we dont have the $$ to be doing this.

I dislike any sort of favoritism in hiring, other than hiring the best candidate. You can bet that if this goes through, it's going to be tough for local born people of all races to land a job when someone new to the country comes with a $10K bounty on their head. If the issue is immigrants coming to Canada and being disappointed at the job prospects, that's unfortunate, they weren't dragged here in shackles. If they were sold a fairy tale about working here and jobs jobs jobs, then the P.R. needs to be corrected.

$10K incentive to hire immigrants? This has disaster written all over it. This isn't about race at all, this $10K incentive would apply to any and all races of immigrant.

I disagree with this policy because I don't think any group should be favoured.

However, if I were a small business owner, I would love the prospect of a $10000 tax discount to hire an immigrant. I would hire nothing but immigrants to begin with, and getting a $10k credit would only sweeten the pot.

Why do I say this? I am a supervisor of roughly 60 people in a large business that has a strong union: meaning that people can show their true work habits without fear due to job security and strong protection from discipline. Of these 60 employees, only about 12 are Canadian born, also none of the immigrants have been here less than 10 years.

In my experience, and grossly generalized with such a narrow sample size, my Canadian born employees (regardless of race) are far from my best employees. By far my best employees in terms of high productivity and low talk-back are my Chinese immigrant employees, my worst for talk-back are Caribbean (both black and Carib-Indian), my worst for low productivity are Filipino. Canadian-born white and other races fall somewhere in the middle.

So... if I owned my own business and making money meant more than being politically correct, I would advertise for employees on www.51.ca or similar site, and a $10k tax credit would only make that decision easier.

Hot topic in Peterborough right now, and I think it's ridiculous. Peterborough has a staggering 11% unemployment rate, the worst in all of Ontario. Now they are looking at giving companies tax breaks on hiring immigrants instead of the people that were born and raised here and put in there dues. Not only are a lot of companies contracting there work overseas, now you have them just kicking out existing employee's and bringing in new " Canadians " just to save some money.

What's put in their dues? Sat around collect EI, or better yet sitting around and collecting "disability" for a disability they don't have. All too common. If people want to work. And there is no denying those people work hard. If you want to sit on your *** and complain about "foreigners" getting jobs while you sit on your *** collecting EI not much is going to change for you.

Put in their dues = if I had a hard time at life, everyone else will have to. The old 'Crabs in a barrel' thing.

This type of thinking is not surprising from "our own people" since some immigrants who come here experience the same thing from their own country men. Great human beings all around.

This is somewhat related. My wife brought our youngest child to school Tuesday, first day of grade one. My wife met the teacher and was standing there speaking with some other mothers when, in her words, a mother and child of either Indian or Pakistani origin came up to the teacher and told her that her child was not going to stand for the playing of the National Anthem. When asked why, the teacher was told that they did not respect Canada and hated the country. Apparently, this woman went off for a few minutes about her hate for the country, leaving the teacher flustered and my wife, never one to be at a loss for words, speechless.

I'm all for immigration, but if I were to hear something like that, my response would be to offer to pay for their plane ride home. I'd even help them pack and drive them to the airport. It's a shame that such a small minority of people make so many look bad.
All that mother did was make life hard for her kid, as the teachers will not treat her as an equal.

Semantics aside, it's all a smokescreen by McGuinty. He's obviously attempting to procure the immigrant vote. A wave the Liberals have been riding since the Trudeau era.

I just wanna know when and how you move from the immigrants status to "our own people"??

I've been here more than 5 years
I have a Canadian passport
I like hockey
I drink beer
I speak the Queen's language

Do I qualify???

Not until you correctly answer the following question:

Who are Bob and Doug McKenzie?

Something esoteric like a pop culture question? That's silly. A more practical approach would be a pass/fail driving test in a car with a manual transmission while wearing Sorels. Might weed out some of the cruise missile cab drivers, at least.

A domestic made car or one of those suspicious imports, with tiny pedals designed by people with little feet?

I can show my self out.........

I say lets tighten up all immigration procedures, opps, we are about 500 years too late, just ask any first nations people.....

in my neck of the woods, some of the WORST drivers are sorel-wearing full size domestic truck drivers. . .in fact, there's an unsolved hit and run fatality currently in the news, involving an f150 and farm plates. . .

as for the small cars, the typical combo i see is an older farm truck (domestic) that may or may not run all the time, with a small subcompact hatchback (usually a hyundai accent) that gets used every day.
