GoPro's new Hero3 is lighter, faster, higher res and has WiFi, comes in three flavors

Future Shop has the GoPro 2 motor sports edition for $219 is that a good price?

The basic gopro3 is cheaper than that. No point in getting anything other than a 3 unless you get some killer deal.

Remember that the GoPro HD Hero2 is better than the GoPro HD Hero3 White iirc -- not sure why they do this. Correct me if I am wrong, but I believe the basic hierarchy of GoPros currently is (from best to worst):

- GoPro HD Hero3 Black Edition
- GoPro HD Hero3 Silver Edition*
- GoPro HD Hero2*
- GoPro HD Hero3 White Edition

* = both use the same sensor so image quality should be near identical, however the Hero3 Silver is thinner, uses MicroSDHC vs SDHC, and has the WiFi Backpack essentially built/baked-in.

i picked up the fs deal. can't complain with the price, altho it would have been nice to have the wifi built in so I could run a battery backpack, but i'm already dreaming up ways of keeping this thing charged on the bike.

Just get a skeleton case for it. Just don't forget to change it up when it starts to rain. :)

Were there more available? I saw that the deal goes on into January...

Yea, but I'd rather devise a way to keep it waterproof. I have an IP67 rated USB port on the bike already, so I don't have to worry about weatherproofing the other end, plus I want to be able to leave it out to do time lapse stuff as well and not worry about weather.

Bestbuy did the online sale starting on xmas eve, but since I was far too drunk to be purchasing crap online, I figured i'd wait until the next day, and if they were out of stock I'd try and grab one at Future Shop. BB sold out the next day online, and FS will likely be sold out by now also. They had a half dozen or so at the Bayfield Store in Barrie when I got mine at noon yesterday.

Correct, took me abit to figure it out for my purchase. The GoPro Hero3 Silver is the same sensor as the Hero2 and the Hero3 White is the same sensor as the Hero1.

I think I'm gonna go with the Silver 3........ the Black is nice, but who needs the 4K resolution these days. You need a power-hungry computer just to store it and edit those videos. I wouldn't use anything higher than 1080p.

Isn't the silver just a rebadged 2 with wifi built in? The way I see it, if you figure you might use the remote, the black is only around $20 more than a silver + buying the remote separately.

With that said, I almost bought the 2, however in thinking about it, I might want to connect the LCD for framing or get an extended batt pack down the road, which would mean I couldn't use the wifi backback on the 2 (and the remote) at the same time. Since wifi is built in the 3s, connecting either the LCD or extended batt pack and using the remote is not an issue.

Anyhow just my 2 cents. Also my dad picked up a 2 back when they first were deeply discounted (during the launch/pre-order of the 3), so I plan on borrowing it a few times before dropping money on a 3 myself, unless I catch a big sale.

Also for bike mounting, just a fyi that RAM makes a GoPRO to RAM conversion mount, vs having to use the sticky pads which come with the GoPro itself (and in my case, I already have a RAM ball/mount on both the brake lever assembly and the fork stem for a GPS and other things):

Well apparently I didn't do my research. I was under the impression the white was the same as the hero2. Guess I'm wrong. But looking at it I'm leaning towards the black. I do find it odd that GoPro is selling it cheaper at their site compared to bestbuy/futureshop.

All three, black, silver and white have WiFi support with the remote. The black comes with the remove in the box ($80)

The only benefit the Black has over the other two is the Cinema and 4K modes, but if you look up youtube demo's, the frame rate is so low/choppy it isn't effective for high speed work. AND it takes still photos at a higher resolution.

All the GoPro commercials you see are shot in 1080p at 48FPS (or whatever the black shoots at). Silver and white max out at 1080p at 30FPS

I could be wrong but isn't the black the only one that comes with the remote (silver, white) you'd have to purchase separately.

I have the first of those mounts, my biggest complaint is that it doesn't have the same style captive nut that all the other GoPro mounts use, which means it can't be used with the thumbscrew style bolts that GoPro uses. I'm thinking about cannibalizing one of my clips to harvest the nut, unless I can find something at a hardware store that fits it.

Yes, black comes with the remote but you can buy it separately for the other two.............. makes you wonder why the black is $100 more than the silver since the 4K/Cinema view technology on it isn't very impressive.

Or you could just buy the black and trade in/sell the remote

Main thing to know is all 3 have wifi support (which can be controled by a tablet/phone via application). So you don't really need a remote, per say.

Meh, I might as well just get the cheaper White version since I"d just be using 1080 or 720.

But if you really want to see how it records, youtube some videos of people opening their own..... because there is still a lot of "fish eye" going on in the newer version.

I can only guess they do a lot of cropping on those tv commercials to remove it. But it's pretty noticeable, especially in this video:

Same effect on white, silver and black videos.

FF to 7:00.... LOTS of fish eye: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yZvPBBHAuiI

Another FYI about the remote: it uses a WiFi based connection so you will need some sort of WiFi to connect to just to use the remote. If WiFi is not turned on or accessible the camera will not recognize it. It is not an infra-red remote that will work any time/anywhere.

Going to be the White or Silver version for me, I can live with the fish eye, it's still a solid camera. I just won't be buying into the gimmicks. You can get the same amount of control with a tablet/smartphone... and there isn't a TV out there (besides Sony's $25,000 85 inch 4K) that can display the Cinema or 4K resolutions respectfully.

And since the remotes are universal and can "work up to 60 Go Pro's within 100 feet", better be careful at trackdays/race weekends where there are dozens of these...... there might be some on/off conflict :p

The GoPro website also shows which version of the camera has medium, narrow or ultra wide field of view options. The Ultra Wide angle reduces distortion.

No, It creates it's own WIFI network... you can be in the middle of nowhere and it will work.

The WHITE is the same as the original GoPro HD. the Silver is the same sensor as the GoPro2. Why not save your money and get the GoPro2 for $220 at Bestbuy.

Another reason to shoot 4k is to zoom into the video without losing any resolution.

Again, no. You have to pair the remote to your gopro... You can't randomly control everyone else's GoPro. Read the first comment.

AFAIK, both the built-in Wifi on the Hero3 cameras and the Wifi BackPack work as a hotspot/AP meaning the wireless remote connects to the camera in the same fashion as a laptop connecting to a wireless router. It doesn't require you to have a wifi network in the vicinity as the GoPro acts as it's own wireless network.

As for having multiple cameras, much like bluetooth things have to be paired/connected to the network/GoPro, meaning a remote would only talk to GoPros on that same 'network' (one GoPro as a hotspot/AP, and the others + remote as clients on that network). With that said, I'm sure if you put enough of them in the same 100ft, there'd be so much signal noise/cross-over things would not work correctly -- I've seen that before with XBOX 360s in the past (room crammed with about 20 consoles with 4 controllers each -- nothing including the 2.4GHz wifi worked until it was all removed).

I should also note the above presents one potential issue when using a phone instead of a remote -- At least with the older iPhones, when they connect to a wireless network it 'prefers' that over cellular data, as it is faster/cheaper. Normally this is fine, but when paired to a GoPro's network, there is no Internet connection, meaning emails, etc will no longer come in to the phone (and the phone might keep trying to contact various servers). Not sure if the newest iPhones or Android devices work the same but I assume they likely would.

I also agree that 4K is useless for the Hero3 Black @ 15fps -- The biggest reasons for splurging on that model is if you were going to buy the wifi remote anyways (only $20 more than a silver + buying the remote separately), or for cinetune (or whatever it is called), faster framerates @ 1080p & 720p, plus a sensor which handles low light better than the other models.

I didn't know that. Would make sense though, considering the white is cheaper. If that's the case I wouldn't tell anyone to get the white as any low light conditions the gopro works like ****.

I got the black for christmas. The video qaulity is way better than my hdhero. I can't believe how clear the thing is at night. I did notice that the battery seems to die pretty fast though. I don't bother with the wifi cause it's fairly easy to press the buttons. I'm kind of worried I may have a defect. I've heard of stories of others having battery issues as well.
