...engineers -_-

Clarifying use of the term “engineer”

Contrary to recent media reports, the man reported to have been fired from Hydro One for shouting obscenities at a television reporter is not a professional engineer. Shawn Simoes, the employee reportedly fired, is not licensed by Professional Engineers Ontario (PEO) and, therefore, cannot legally be called an engineer.

In Ontario, the titles “engineer” and “professional engineer" are restricted by law. Only those who have demonstrated they possess the necessary qualifications and have been licensed by PEO may use these titles, which are often abbreviated as "P.Eng." To confirm whether a person is licensed, the public may search PEO’s directory of licensed professional engineers at www.peo.on.ca.

What ever happened to supporting and educating each other?

I'd say that the vulgar dork has been well-schooled by this set of events. If you want to further support him, set up a crowd-funding web site so he can better pursue his new FHRITP career.

Gen Pop doesn't care.

Canada....saw off a guys head and eat it in public and you will be free to walk around in less than 6 years. Swear and laugh at a stupid comment on camera and your life is over for the foreseeable future

I don't know if it's been mentioned yet in these 14 pages, but when you pull a FHRITP, you're not aiming it AT the reporter... It's just something you say on live TV.

Just clarifying because I've seen people say "I wouldn't want people saying that to my *insert female companion here*" as if they think the dudes are saying specifically to that reporter.

Its like nicky nicky nine door as a kid: It's nothing personal; just a prank. Whether you think its funny or not is your opinion. I think it's hilarious and I can watch hours of FHRITP comps on youtube.

Not disputing this but there is one other profession that isn't licensed by PEO and it can and is legally called an engineer and that is a Locomotive Engineer. By literal definition an engineer is one who operates an engine so it's a little sad we are always the forgotten black sheep of the family when if you look at the literal definition we have more claim to it than anyone else. Sorry didn't mean to hijack the thread, carry on.

Even sadder is the stationary engineer. At least on a locomotive you're going places.

He wasn't wearing anything that could tie him to Hydro One, they didn't buy his ticket to the tfc, he wasn't on call or at a work function, why the hell do people think it's acceptable for a company to fire their employees for what they do completely outside of work? Hydro One doesn't own the guy, they have no rights to his free time, if they did it would be called slavery. I truly hope he sues the *** off them and wins a seven figure settlement. This isn't a boy vs. girl thing, it's a freedom thing. If he was a sales guy, and some of his clients told him they didn't want to deal with him any more because of his views/opinions, which in turn caused his sales to drop, then, and only then would I find it acceptable for a company to let him go. Laissez Faire.

And to the guys saying how disgusting the statements made were, pull you heads out of you bungholes! I guarantee your sisters/wives/daughters/mistresses have said far more offensive things in their lives. I hate politically correct people, you use political correctness to help you fumble through life and make up for the fact you have no personality or charisma.

If I won a lawsuit for every offensive or racial thing directed directly at me, I'd own the country. Even more so for physical injury inflicted.

Oh so unless i pay the extortion fee my job title cant state "Engineer" in Ontario. You have it "copyrighted"??!

Go **** yourselves!!

As to the question of "what would you do/feel if this was said to your wife/girlfriend/fiancee?"

It'd turn to her and ask her "are you offended?" If she said no, as most people wouldnt be as they realize its some drunked idiot, we'd go on our merry way.
If she said "yes, it offended me" I'd tell her to harden the **** up! Lifes full of things that offend us!

I'm tired of over-exaggeration, blowing things out of context and not allowing humans to be humans. What the hell happened to the saying "We are only human" We arent allowed to make judgement errors anymore?

We are going to ruin a guys life, possibly his families financial situation because of one drunken mistake? Those same high-and-mightys are the ones bitching about people on EI and welfare....well, where do you think he's gonna end up?!

You see it as extortion the government see it as protection to the consumer or the public in general.

Imagine you need to hire a civil engineer to design a bridge over a river on your property, a bridge which you and your family will drive over every day. Now imagine that without that level of assurance from the PEO that the person you hired just happened to call himself or herself an engineer but has no clue what he or she is doing. I wouldn't want to drive over a bridge designed by someone who has no clue about bridge design, would you?

The same applies to doctors and other profession for example, only medical doctors can have the M.D. designation, etc, etc. Again these are just ways to protect the public by letting you know that the different governing bodies have certified these individuals to perform these particular jobs.

When I originally replied to IXFe regarding what he said I was only trying to clarify a technicality which was that to say that only they can be legally "called" engineers was a slight misconception. That while he was correct that only those certified by the PEO can display the title of P.Eng in the same way that only medical doctors can display the title of M.D. or someone with a doctorate can display the title of PhD, etc. there is at least one other profession which is legally "called" an engineer.

It seems to me that you feel his comments were made as a sense of entitlement (feel free to correct me if I'm wrong on this) and while I can't speak for IXFe I don't believe that was his intention, it certainly wasn't mine.

Prank or not. I just see this as being rude, and very disrespectful in general. If I did this on camera and my boss saw this (military btw). I'd be so far up the poo creek, and probably sent to the detention barracks in Edmonton for a few weeks. Btw there's no cable tv or umm free time to yourself.

The comment was most certainly not intended for the poster. He is just clarifying the "engineer" part. Im ranting in general.

I abhor these self serving entities that do nothing but leech of the working man. Paying them to be a member is nothing more than extortion. It does nothing to stop the incompetent people from joining.

My mom dealt with same issues with a "translation association". It was nothing more than a yearly fee that allows you to translate documents. No qualifications were needed.

He just lost his job. He is not going to prison.
Everything indicates it was legally justified, so no pile of money for him.
Sometimes drunken mistakes cost.
Get over it.

Life's full of things that offend us! Right?

It was a slow news day . A go nowhere reporter got a better of the guy .All the other outlets piled on to support her . They see it as fighting back against the goofs that ruin their live broadcasts . If there was a real news story that day .This wouldn`t have made it to air .

This situation had noting to do with his work . A reprimand if that should have been enough .

She has a long carrier as second rate reporter .I hope this won`t be her 15 minutes of fame .
