Car talk

OP, I'm in the same boat as you're but plan on staying carless for some more time, and I own an sv650s. My wife wants an automatic and I try to drive MT as much as possible. Had leased a 2020 Corolla SE (CVT) and transferred it to someone else after a year. Good family car but doesn't suit me.

I would suggest 4th or 5th gen Honda Civic Si, Nissan 350z, Infiniti G35s/G37s coupe, Mazda Miata, and finally the overpriced BRZ/86.

350z and G coupes are a bit quicker than sv650 for sure. Haven't driven these but had many friends who owned one and they would drop a gear and disappear.

If 25k is your budget, buy something for 15k-17k and keep the rest to tend to maintenance/repairs. I learnt that the hard way lol.

Edit: same boat in terms of criteria.
Kind of surprised the miata didnt get mentioned as often, not nearly as practical but so many people seem to love them

I would have also suggested Honda S2000 if it weren't so expensive. Both are a hoot to drive from what I heard. Personally, I don't like convertibles but if I were to get one, I wouldn't mind the Miata and S2000. All the best with your hunt :)

I want a GTI at some point in my life. My BIL's will be coming up in 1-2 years for sale...and I'll have to think really hard whether I want it.

I think it's one of those 'jack of all trades, master of none' type of cars. Fun, sporty, practical, economical (fairly), and roomy.

Sell the Volt, buy the GTI, teach wife to drive manual, buy new clutch.
My DD is a GTI. Manual ,2016. 108000kms. To this point all I've had to pay for is rear brakes. I'd buy another with out hesitation.

Oh, I read "grocery getter" and assumed you wanted something practical, which is why I suggested a Mustang that seats 4 and has a useable trunk. Practicality aside, the Miata is my number one recommendation to anyone for a fun sporty car that's rock solid reliable. Feels faster than it is, but isn't fast at all.

Convertibles designed to be that way from the beginning rather than coupes with the top cut off and reinforcements added are two completely different things.

Once prices go back to reality, I may just become that 'middle aged dad' that gets a Miata....affordable, and a decent 3rd car. Plus the kids will start driving the other cars in the family, so a third car will 100% be required. But that's still 12 years away at least.

12 years…car will be worth x2, gas will cost a fortune and you’ll probably pay a tax for driving an ICE. Start saving.

I added my middle aged dad car this winter a Camaro convertible. Old and cheap but nice for cruising around. Not mine but very close.

I loved the f-body cars. They had a lift-gate like a hatchback so you could fit bigger things in the back. A couple of people in my high school had them and I was so jealous.
