Car talk

You guys are awesome , Dude comes looking for an equivalent of an SV650 and we are offering up Audi TT ? and a Ranger? ( didnt the ranger guy buy a ridgeline?) (or a vette)
Somebody link the youtube video of Leno explaining why he owns no Ferraris LOL
You're awesome too! But I still think the previous gen Ranger is the 4 wheel equivalent of the sv650.

In all fairness, I was suggesting an older Audi TT.You can pick those up for $5-10k. Same price as an SV650. I have a friend that sold a real nice older one for $6k.

Lol kinda agreed. S197 Mustang GT is where the conversation could have ended.

I want a GTI at some point in my life. My BIL's will be coming up in 1-2 years for sale...and I'll have to think really hard whether I want it.

I think it's one of those 'jack of all trades, master of none' type of cars. Fun, sporty, practical, economical (fairly), and roomy.

Sell the Volt, buy the GTI, teach wife to drive manual, buy new clutch.

It's going to spend a lot of time in the garage unless you can work on your car, anticipate what needs to be changed and make the change yourself. It will end up costing some money, time and effort.

I owned an mk4 gti and except the engine and transmission and couple of other parts, I changed the entire car. Beautiful car when it drives but needs a lot of attention.

PS: I don't have wrenching skills and it was my first car, so I did make some mistakes in picking the car.

if you got wrenching skills, any 35i bmw... buttery smooth turbo inline 6 with gobs of torque, i don't think theres anythin for the same $ that compares

Is it a Mk7? Mk7 clutches are marginal at best (unless you win the probability lottery). Disable hill hold assist, remove clutch delay valve and a couple other things before you drive it much. Makes the experience much better.

OP, I'm in the same boat as you're but plan on staying carless for some more time, and I own an sv650s. My wife wants an automatic and I try to drive MT as much as possible. Had leased a 2020 Corolla SE (CVT) and transferred it to someone else after a year. Good family car but doesn't suit me.

I would suggest 4th or 5th gen Honda Civic Si, Nissan 350z, Infiniti G35s/G37s coupe, Mazda Miata, and finally the overpriced BRZ/86.

350z and G coupes are a bit quicker than sv650 for sure. Haven't driven these but had many friends who owned one and they would drop a gear and disappear.

If 25k is your budget, buy something for 15k-17k and keep the rest to tend to maintenance/repairs. I learnt that the hard way lol.

Edit: same boat in terms of criteria.

His is a 2021, so whatever model it is. In that sweet electric blue.

Good call @voyageur totally forgot about the G35/37...great cars. Fast, sporty, practical (if you go sedan) and AWD option as well.

The Z is obviously a 2 seater...so it depends on what OP wants, but I love those things.

I own an E46 M3 and Aprilia SXV, and I'm scared of the 35i's. I heard all of the horror stories, and then my brother got a 335i (after he was amazed how my then-15-year-old M3 drove like new) and had do the intake cleaning and then needed both turbos replaced. He got rid of it pretty quick.

That said, any BMW non-M and non-turbo inline 6 should be bulletproof.

That would be probably what I get when I'm ready to buy. A 2013 G37s (coupe) with a 6 MT, RWD. Prices on those are insane though and I'm not willing to pay that price. Will wait for the market to crash :ROFLMAO:

mk8. I know much less about those. VW has been coding their miserable hill hold on by default for years so I assume that still applies. Let out the clutch to friction point, it grabs, wait a second, the brakes release, let out the clutch the rest of the way and go. Aw hell no. Nightmare.

The WRX system was pretty good when stopped uphill. Hit the brakes, stop, green light, release the brakes and the car holds until you touch the gas. Release the clutch and no rollback. I enjoyed it and found it helpful. Crap how I miss that car.

Hill hold you say? Yea my bike has that.

Neener neener! 😛

Meh. There at least least a few other JC reviews I prefer (Ariel Atom for one). As for the car, if I was buying it as a DD, I would go with GTI/R over TT. Close enough to the same guts, much lower maintenance costs.
