Try riding out of downtown Toronto, on The Gardiner, during rush hour. You'd be pounding the handle bars after coming over a rise and seeing a truck in the right lane, a truck in the centre lane, a car too scared to pass in the left lane, and then empty road in front of them for a half a mile.

Lol now I KNOW you're exaggerating.. No empty road ANYWHERE in the GTA during the rush hour. However, I know EXACTLY what you mean as it's a frequent occurrence on the QEW. Also caused by idiots camping in the left lane for 5km before getting into the HOV lane.

Yes, I'm exaggerating. It's only half a Km, not half a mile. Other than that, it's something I see about once a week. Think about the area on The Gardiner, westbound, between Jameson and the Humber Bridge.

Hard to find half a car's worth of space there during the real rush hour.. Will concede the point that it's not only possible but frequent just before and just after the rush hour.

Held the door open for an old couple at Tim Horton's, neither of them said a word so I loudly said "you're welcome". Another old guy came right behind them so I held the door for him as well figuring he'd restore my dwindling faith in humanity... no joy.

This thread feels like home. :-)

What I hate even more is the dirty look I get when I say "you're welcome" after doing the same as you mentioned.

I generally leave work around 3:30pm and hit the Humber Bridge around 4:00pm, on a good day.

I feel so bad for you, I want to thank you on their behalf

I sense sarcasm but I don't give a rat's ***. lol

I actually genuinely meant that.

There was one time I opened the door for my mom & some douche bumped her out. In retrospect I should've slammed the door in his face

though quite often washrooms are designed that the person coming in can't get in til the person going out exits

Good point - I think that right off the top that women's washrooms should be twice the size of the men's because the respective times needed by each gender are different. Any women's washroom should be able to accommodate more people (ideally women too but that is another topic)

As to why there appears to be a choke point, I think it has to do with the need for privacy overriding the need for good flow. For good flow, get rid of the doors and straighten everything out (walkway in, walkway out, and so on).

I don't get this...why do you think that doing something good entitles you to a thank you? Are you just holding the door open to get thanked?

Perhaps because it's common courtesy; a thing that's sorely lacking these days? I know that a lot of people believe that they're special snowflakes, who deserve trophies just for showing up to pretty much anything, but the world does not exist just for their service.

I guess they don't teach courtesy in schools anymore

My kids and I do it all the time. We do it because regardless of who the other person is, we always try to be the better person.

It's not the job of schools. It's the job of self absorbed parents, who think that it's the job of schools.

Well I think its part of education to instill manners into its people.
We were taught to say thanks & please in elementary school

You can't teach manners to someone who's raised by their parents to be a ******. Parents gotta parent and stop expecting schools, social workers, police, society, etc... to raise their kids for them.

I'm not saying its the sole responsibility of the school system to teach them. But elementary schools should be preparing kids for the real world. If their parents fail, doesn't mean they have to
