Nope, not joking. I have asked management at various places that play horrendous music and that was the reason. For instance, a McDonalds near me plays 50's music. Reason?...the kids hate it so they don't hang around. A Keg played their music loud. Reason?...so people cant have enjoyable conversations and will eat their dinner and leave.

I understand the reasoning there, to a point. For that to work tho, you would need to annoy the customers. I would think these types of businesses depend on repeat business. I know a few eateries won't get my business again for that very reason. I realize many people aren't as sensitive to this as I am. For me it's a constant challenge.
Did an informal poll at Timmies, some people feel as I do, others don't notice and some actually like it. I'll conclude that it's just a dumb idea by a dumb person. That makes me feel better.
I will now be a regular at Second Cup down the street. Hope they don't mind my blue collar getup.
So, do you go back to these places?
I go to the McDs because the music doesn't bother me that much. I don't go to that Keg anymore. Ask the manager of that Timmies about the music. They may not be aware that it is that loud out there. Or they will tell you why they are doing it.
I did forget to mention one thing. The Keg played their music at a normal level until 8PM. Then they turned it up. It was to get the people that had been sitting there since 6ish to leave and make room for another crowd.

At coffeeclatch one guy intimate with management did mention that it was done to increase traffic during slow periods. It's a ghost town in evenings.
Ya, the Keg thing makes sense. Gotta move people along somehow, I guess.

The big boxes you see on the side of adventure touring bikes, whether aftermarket or factory(KTM). Why are they mostly being mounted at a severe angle front to back? Why aren't they parallel to the ground? Is this the apehangarization of ADV?
