Bye Bye Tommy boy Ford kicked out!!

Re: BY By Tommy boy Ford kicked out!!

What a waste of money.
Tell me somebody's friend did not cash out on this.
http://torontoist.com/2009/06/simcoe_wavedeck/

Many years ago in Chicago I saw for the fist time 'The Bean' sculpture aka Cloud Gate at Millennium Park. I thought “What a waste of money”.

anish-kapoor-cloud_gate_03.jpg

But then it got worse. They told me it cost over $20,000,000 !!! I cringed and pulled my hairs out. “What a waste of money”.

But then it got better: no tax money was used, it was all privately funded (AT&T).

So it depends where the money is coming from. The Simcoe Wavedeck could have been funded privately, why not? Also, The Bean in Chicago is more than dubious art. It is a tourist magnet! Now I understand that it wasn’t about sculpture, it was about the creation of a must-visit destination within downtown. It was win-win for the city of Chicago.

Edit: I don't know if it was a win-win for AT&T, since they had to pay over $20 million....

Stuff like that is what a BIA or chamber of commerce is for. Only very rarely should it be provided for by the taxpayers.

bet that AT&T got some sort of tax break on the deal
so it stands to reason that the taxpayers did foot the bill abet not up front
AT&T got some good publicity for pennies on the dollar
the "artist" raised their profile and can say "20m for that POS"
awesome arrangement for everyone but the taxpayers

Re: BY By Tommy boy Ford kicked out!!

Why on earth is there that goofy u-shaped railing cutting everything off?
I KNOW, I used to live a couple of minutes away and facepalmed when I saw that

Giving a break equal to the cost of the item is stupid. Giving a break as if it was a deductible donation might be reasonable.

Chicago taxpayers are doing very well, thank you.

Let’s take a look at one thing connected to the waterfront and the bean: Tourism.

TORONTO
Over 21 million people visit Toronto annually.
Visitors to Toronto spent $4.4 billion in direct expenditures during their visits in 2010

CHICAGO

Over 43 million people visit Chicago annually.
Visitors to Chicago spent $12 billion in direct expenditures during their visits in 2011 (the City kept $725 million in tax revenues)

Twice as many people visited Chicago- and they spent three times as much.

Anyway... who the heck is going to come to Toronto, when they can visit Chicago instead ? Have you seen our waterfront? :banghead:

There are many ways to build a city. Our leaders just don't know how.

On today’s Star: From the police document that remains blacked out.

"August 27, 2013, Police Attend Mayor Ford’s residence". It was 6:51 p.m.
In another section, it says "the call was characterized as a domestic assault"

That same day (Tuesday, Aug. 27) mayor Crack Ford checked into the Grand Hotel in the Moss Park neighbourhood. The mayor stayed in the hotel until Friday, Aug. 30.

On Wednesday, Aug. 28, at 5 p.m., Toronto teacher Walter Azzalini was cycling on his way to play tennis when he saw Ford in his black Escalade in an area immediately east of the Grand Hotel. Azzalini told the Star that he saw Ford motion to someone on the street and the man came up to him, accepted something from Ford, then left.

Ford backed onto a parking pad adjacent to Gabrielle Roy school and the man reappeared - and passed something to Ford through the open window of the Escalade. Azzalini said he found the interaction odd.

Azzalini said “it was very clearly the mayor, and it was an unusual thing to see at that time of day.”

The Star does not know what changed hands between the man, described as being in his early 20s, and the mayor.

Toronto is loosing big time on the waterfront. There should be lots of patios and beach bars on the waterfront.

Or the deep dish pizza, the competitive sports teams (NHL, NBA, etc), etc etc

Not sure if this has been posted before but he looked pretty high at 9:30.

Re: BY By Tommy boy Ford kicked out!!

Chicago also has the fame factor of being Chicago, the scene of of many famous movies and TV shows, bands, Sports teams (as nfq mentioned above), and history (gangsters, etc.). Toronto has what... a pointy tower, losing sports teams (okay we seem to finally be working on the losing part, sorta), a history centred on insurance companies and Canadian banks rather than bloody shootouts, and a reputation for being bland.

As far as special events like Caribana or the TIFF, I'd say both cities have a fair number, so that's kind of a wash.

People get excited about Chicago in ways they'll never get excited about Toronto.

Toronto is loosing big time on the waterfront. There should be lots of patios and beach bars on the waterfront.

There actually are a fair number of those along the waterfront. They just kind of blow.

They should be putting these things on the water and let them run until 3-4am.

I think you're the first person I've heard of that doesn't love the bean. I love Chicago, whenever someone asks me what to see, first thing I always recommend is the bean. No one I know has been disappointed by it yet.
