Bye Bye Tommy boy Ford kicked out!!

Re: BY By Tommy boy Ford kicked out!!

Another downtown publication's point of view. We get it, the south of Bloor population hates Ford and loves Chow. Bloor Street has become the Mason-Dixon Line of Toronto.

On a more policy oriented note. I actually agree that we shouldn't be cutting consumption taxes - GST/HST, and other forms of user fees. We should be raising these taxes while dropping income taxes. There are a few good reasons for this.

- it puts incentives in the right place - income taxes create disincentives to earn more at higher tax brackets, it also taxes money that would otherwise be savings. ( the savings part is my main complaint here ).
- it puts the cost on the user. If you use particular services more, you should pay more for them.
- it is more localized - consumption taxes are often related to the services you use locally - less people in ottawa deciding how to split money across all provinces and territories.

That would be nice, but what are the chances of that happening??

Moonshine runs? :D

I didn't get the 'love chow' portion from the written article. Ford's trademark is his belief that he knew more than the experts and that ended up being his downfall.

I personally feel the Mega City concept is doomed. You have 2 very different groups with very different needs. Suburbs and the downtown should be their own cities as it was.

The dividing line is more north than Bloor if you look at election maps and even then some of the areas north were pretty close.

Different areas, different needs and different value systems.

Re: BY By Tommy boy Ford kicked out!!

The poll results after the article places Chow at the top of preferred mayoral candidates.

I posted for the article as it was written not for the other polls on the website. I didn't even scroll down to the polls after reading the article.

Re: BY By Tommy boy Ford kicked out!!

Toronto's mill rate is one of the lowest in the GTA. The surrounding major cities all have higher rates. Toronto citizens pay more than that, collectively, via various nickel and dime fees/taxes. What I'm saying is cut the waste and then rationalize the multiplicity of taxes/fees into the mill rate, with a reasonable increase, instead of trying to hide the REAL costs of living in Toronto via bafflegab.

Comparing what to what. The screw up here is in market value assessment. What has the price of the house got to do with the taxes paid? Do they charge more to park a Cadillac than a Chevy? MVA is a rip off. If you put in granite counters and marble floors does it cost the city more to service your property? It's just another way to murk the waters.

Someone was complaining that their $500K home in 905 paid more taxes than a $500K house in TO. Right, the one on 905 turf is a 3000 square footer on a big lot and the TO one is a semi on a postage stamp.

Taxes should be like expense accounts. The city gets reimbursed for services provided with NO slush fund for private do good projects (Even football teams)

Or do it the way other countries do. Charge tax on just the value of the block of land. In Aus if you have a 10million dollar house on a 200k block of land you only pay property tax on the 200k land value. People in the GTA are getting gouged on these taxes.

You should take note that I mentioned nothing about MVa in that post.

New York manages pretty well. I assume you're talking self-governing boroughs?

Re: BY By Tommy boy Ford kicked out!!

It's no surprise to me that ford got nailed by a mandatory minimum though it is kind of ironic, it is usually conservatives that call for them, when i hear of him doing dumb things i remember him driving while reading the paper (I still think he should have been charged with careless for that). some of his cuts were good but some were too far to the bone. not everything can be measured with dollars and calculators.

What's funny is Ford's dad, Doug Ford SR, served in Mike Harris' caucus. Supposedly, Mike Harris is a close advisor to Rob Ford, don't know how true that is though.

It's also usually conservatives who decry the actions of "activist judges" who "ignore the law", who are now saying that the judge in this case should have ignored the law. Sauce for the goose.

Re: BY By Tommy boy Ford kicked out!!

Property Tax Hikes... Well MPAC said the average assessment was increased by 22% (and change) phased in over the next few years for Toronto. In other words unless the City LOWERS the MIL rate property taxes are going up on average 22% over the next few years. To keep taxes flat the MIL rate must be lowered 22% over the same time period. These types of increases have been going on for the better part of a decade!

When they talk about raising and lowering taxes they are talking about the MIL rate ONLY! So "no tax increase" means a 22% increase in what YOU pay! MPAC goes up, MIL does not go down. Your taxes and their revenue goes up. They waste the extra money but at the same time say we did not increase taxes or only increased the MIL rate a little.

Man, here's another example that makes me wonder if dude must've been doing something right. If the best people can do is get all uppity about driving while reading, passing a street car door, getting the name of a city wrong, refusing to step on that scale for the weigh-in, missing gay pride to spend time with family, etc. then what does that say about the people complaining?

Granted, the street car door thing's actually a pretty big deal, but so many of the things that made the news just seemed like nitpicking for the sake of nitpicking (this most recent debacle is one of the few incidents that I think is actually worth making the news).

I know some insider information about the guy that could get me in a lot of trouble if I told

It was over the constant pursuing that The Star engaged in that I stopped reading them and taking them seriously as a news source. Still, there was a measure of dismissive arrogance that Ford displayed over certain issues (distracted driving and passing the open doors of a streetcar, for example) that irked me.

Best mayor Toronto has ever had, you can only last so long in a city like Toronto when you hurt the free loading lefties wallets as hard as he did.

Kicked out over $3,000 going to a highschool football team... what a JOKE

He's fat, poorly spoken and doesn't show up to gay pride.. who gives a ****? This is what people base their political views on I guess

If this is what you think then you haven't been paying attention at all to Toronto politics. And No this isn't the reason he got booted and this isn't the reason people were unhappy with him. A lot of former supporters have soured on him after seeing the way he refused to co-operate with city council and stalled a lot of progress for the city costing lots of money. Ford thought he knew better then everyone else. Fact is he didn't and it cost him his job.
