The LCBO should sell off all US booze and wine and not replace stock until this tariff issue is over. Pulling the stock from shelves now just costs us money. It's a stupid response.

You can be sure many Canadian vendors will capitalize on this "Buy Canada" initiative by raising prices. They should be called out one by one.

I think that within 2 weeks, at most, you're going to see major disruptions and plant closures on both sides of the border. Trump is the most ill informed president in history. He is totally clueless as to how the economy works and the impact of his ludicrous trade position. It's only when US workers are laid off and people start screaming that he is going to be forced to listen and back off. Trump thinks disruptions or prices increase will be minor and Americans will understand. LOL. High prices and inflation were key reasons Harris lost, people are very sensitive to prices and we;ll see a response from consumers within weeks, if not sooner.

I don’t believe for a minute that he doesn’t know what’s coming next and what the effects will be.

He knows. He and his cronies just stand to profit from it.

The little guy has to worry about making ends meet and government programs, both existing (Employment insurance etc.) and new ones, must be implemented. God help us if a federal election isn't called immediately and the same bunch of idiots buy more dumpsters to turn into fiscal incinerators.

Individuals need a financial safety net, a rainy day fund, to get them through the tough times. Countries need he same but ours was squandered. The tough times package was delivered yesterday and the wraps come off tomorrow.

Two faced sellout SIngh doing what he does best.

NDP Leader Jagmeet Singh said Tuesday he is open to working with the Liberal government to pass relief measures for workers if U.S. President Donald Trump moves ahead with devastating tariffs on Canadian goods.

Singh has said for weeks he and his MPs will vote to bring down the government and send Canadians to an election at the earliest opportunity when Parliament reconvenes after prorogation in March.

Singh said that commitment still stands — but he opened the door to propping up the Liberals long enough to pass relief legislation.

In other words,

he is open to working with a bunch of incompetent, self serving egotists to pass relief measures for workers while skimming off a huge chunk for their friends.

You're not wrong and the facts are not lost on me. Manufacturing, which I am a part of, is going to be in a world of hurt.

There was a reason you posted this thread though, no? HD and the Canadian employees working in the brand are not immune. No more than I am.
Would the turn signal I bought from Harley Davidson get the 25% treatment? The bag it came in said "Made in Korea"

That's a @Brian P question.
He's just an engineer!!! 😬 More of an Evo or @Mad Mike question

Long and Short is bad news. We send parts across the border sometimes multiple times for plating, processing or assembly, that price all goes up. Then the piece price paid for components that come our way here will be hit. Then the finished goods sold to plants cross border will be hit.

I'm going to reach out to an old colleague and see what he's saying. But I expect some programs will be cancelled outright or the business moved out of Ontario and they retool somewhere cheaper.

Assuming there's no quick reversal.

1945: Hitler was hiding in his bunker and keeping his right hand behind his back when he came out so people wouldn't see it shaking. Twelve year old boys were fighting in the trenches. Old men were conscripted. The Russians were days away from Berlin. Thousands were dying needlessly, both sides, military and civilians.

Hitler, Trump, Putin are / were all mega egotists. They have / had no reverse gear. They will not take one step backwards.

Their followers are so brain washed they can't accept reality and can't live without their ideologies.

If the Republican party can get Trump to change it will come out as "Now you see what we can do to you so we're going to back off for a bit to let you rethink your positions. Meaning, letting the USA buy more control of your politics.

Like Mexico? Oh wait…..

Whatever happens next it’s going to be very interesting to see what India does.

If we need to establish new trade partners then that country will be a priority.

Apparently we just signed a deal with Ecuador….

That’s not gonna cut it, but piece by piece…

Time to panic buy by Tuesday?

Don't give anyone any ideas otherwise we'll all be out of toilet paper again, because, well, been there, done this, right?

It will be interesting to walk into a grocer's a month from now with that list above and see if there really is a 25% price difference between Heinz and French's...

Heinz ketchup is made in Canada again - when the boycot happened they blinked and came back, so that's not a good example, but there are lots of other products that we *will* be able to watch. Will price gouging start and eat up that 25% on other Canadian products as well? We all know the grocers are greedy, but I don't think they're stupid either - this has an overwhelming amount of eyes on this situation right now and stuff like that would neither go unnoticed, nor unpunished by the masses, and possibly even the government. So I don't think that's going to happen.

Those near poverty will be hit hardest and I almost expect a rise up in protest of these rich people shenanigans.

Don't bet on it. Trumps base is overwhelmingly brainwashed, on top of being poorly educated. Dunning Kruger is a thing.

These people could lose their jobs by the end of next week, be stuck paying 25% more for some of the stuff they buy every day, pay 60c more a gallon for gas, and be told directly to their face it's all because of Trumps decision, and these people will STILL support him. It's reached the level of cult now, and their media force feeds narratives to them that are detached from reality. I went and visited a friend in Rochester last summer and every second of time I was in their house it was just Fox News on in the background with various members of the family making the occasional comment about how terrible Biden is, and how terrible they all have it, yadda yadda. It's their entire identity. Now Fox News is just spreading lopsided narratives that will make them think this is all a good thing, even though they'll be sitting unemployed in their trailer, unable to afford groceries. And they will believe it. They have no critical thinking skills, and no ability to change their mind anymore.

Trump may not be in power 4 years from now. A new administration would certainly undo the madness he's sowing

You assume that the new administration will be Democratic. If Trump does as he is determined to do and not only gerrymanders the country all to hell in such a way that it's impossible for them to ever win again, much less turns the countries institutions against anyone except the republicans, that might never happen ever again.

I think the most obvious step in this are is an absolute boycott to Tesla cars in Canada.

Good luck. This exact topic came up in the EV thread right here at GTAM just last week where I said I'd never buy a Tesla if my life depended on it because Musk has now shown who he really is as a person and I wouldn't want to be associated with that in any way, shape, or form - but there was others who said they would be happy to separate the car from the person if the car fit their needs and buy one regardless. So, with that reality, they'll still sell.

While I would love to believe that a prospective new HD buyer would consider an alternate choice, there will always be those die hards that need to attach to a brand. Blindly or otherwise.

Harley people will Harley - they already overpay for what they get because Harley, an extra 25% will only change the monthly payment a handful of dollars every month, many won't care. I guess we'll see if this drags on - with prime motorcycle selling season just weeks away now it will really hurt though once their existing pre-tarriffed stock sells, assuming that the tariff doesn't end up retroactively hitting those if they were still under Harley ownership through a dealer financing arrangement and only "officially" change hands once sold.

Trump openly declared this morning that "Canada is not a viable country" and then reitterated his nonsense about us becoming the 51'st state.

It's becoming clear that this has nothing to do about Fentanyl or illegal border crossing or anything else at all, it's everything to do with his musings a few weeks ago of acquiring us through the use of economic force.

He wants to take over Canada, and this is how he's planning to attempt to do it.

Unless someone blinks or someone drags him into some sort of reality again, we're in for a wild ride ladies and gents. Buckle up.

Our grocery shopping just took a little longer than usual. A quick double check of labels. Yesterday the trip to the LCBO was painful for my wife who really likes Californian wines but there’s some amazing alternatives. 1st world problems.

We also did shopping for pet food and the local pet store had grouped the food by “made in canada” vs others.

I actually think for once in recent history that this is a cause every Canadian is prepared to get behind.

Cynical me cant help but think that this whole tariff deal is as scripted as a WWE wrestling match.
Both the Canadian and US governments are running on a fiscal plan that can not be sustained.
The only solution that could keep them going would be substantial tax hikes, something that may cause dissidence and revolt that would require more government spending to control.
The easiest solution to make the masses accept and even embrace additional taxation is to fire up their patriotism with a external villain.
PT Barnum had a point.

IMO the solution would to find new markets and trading partners forthwith and not impose new taxation on our already overtaxed citizens.

I'm waiting for Poilievre's response.

As of this morning he was at least standing up for the country in his statements, but he just couldn't bring himself to slip in some of his usual anti-Liberal snips. Now is not the time for this anymore. Trudeau is done. FVCK OFF with this nonsense now. Stand up. Unite.

We are facing an emergency at the level where politics and the whole election mudslinging need to be put aside for a few weeks while we react.

Nothing would get Trumps attention more than seeing the likely next PM standing shoulder to shoulder with the current PM, putting politics aside, responding forcefully saying that we're not going to back down and we will do things that will have real effect on the USA's economy. Because right now, I suspect Trump seems to think that once Poilievre takes over, he'll get everything he wants because Poilievre will be his conservative populist buddy.

Who knows, Poilievre might pull a Trump and be playing the 'rah rah Canada' game publicly to get votes, only to turn on us all and roll over for Trump as soon as he's in.

Good lord I hate letting politics live rent free in my head again, but this is existential for more people than seem to have any concept of it yet. It may literally mean the end of my employer of 23 years.
