80 year old woman fractures hip after being tasered by police

what the **** is your point, in this specific instance ?

do you actually agree that they should have tased the old lady ?

My point is that someone with a weapon is dangerous. HOW dangerous is something that has to be determined in each circumstance and immediately jumping on the "fry them" band wagon isn't a very considered response to the situation.

so then you agree, the cops were idiots for tasing granny. and not acting out in the best intrests of the public

why cant you just say that without quoting my post and refuting it ??? are you trying to start an argument ? are you trying to be a troll ?

I do. Chick with a knife is a chick with a knife

So i see. what If it was a handicapped person with a knife.. in a wheelchair, randomly waiving it around at people.. tase them ?

casue He could just lunge at you like a cat.

theres no cut and dry here.. its not " a chick with a knife is a chick with a knife," HUGE difference between 80yr old at 20 yr old,

idiotic comment.. lol

The only idiotic comments, and trolling are coming from you. A knife is just as dangerous in the hands of anyone, and the cops are here to serve and protect , but they have to protect themselves first.

No, I don't agree, because there isn't enough information to make a reasoned decision. When there is, I'll come down on one side or the other. THAT is why I'm 'refuting' your post.

My comment is idiotic? Careful pointing fingers as there are 3 pointed back at you.

Wasn't in a wheelchair, was an able bodied female waving a knife on a public street. She needed to be subdued and they did it.

Get lost with your "what ifs". Try working with just the facts.

Best answer yet. Beats all the what if crap in this thread so far. Someone with a knife is someone with a knife. I'll be willing to bet when the facts come out granny was told to drop it more than once.

Problem was, she was told to drop it in English which she probably didn't understand due to her native language or dementia or both.

also, an 80 year old with a knife is nothing like a 30 year old with a knife. Heck, I'm in my 50's and I know that I'm nothing like I was 20 years ago.

It also depends on how much information the cops had, going in. If all that they knew was "old woman threatening people with a knife", then they acted accordingly. If they knew that she only spoke a language other than english then did they have someone who could speak the language present, or did they go in Tazers a-blazin'? If she was suffering the effects of dementia, then language may not have been an issue at all. All that they could act on, is what they could observe.

Like I said, not enough information.

Arm the police with pillow and tickle bullets, so the rest of the world can stop whining and saying how no one would get hurt if they were there.

I was raised to treat others with respect by default, then withdraw it when someone proves unworthy of it. My, how times have changed.

And that is the proper way to be raised. But we do not live in a perfect world. I was raised in a totalitarian police state. I know what happens when police has absolute power. What I was trying to show is the fundamental difference between respect and fear.

And when someone fails to show you the respect that you are due, by virtue of culture or position of authority, then fear is frequently all that you have to fall back on. How many people, on this very board, seem to disrespect police officers on spec?

^^ I always laugh at the people who talk **** about being a cop and how they're all power tripping ego maniacs etc. I'd like to see one of them do the job for a day. 90 percent of them wouldn't be able to handle it.

An even higher percentage of those people couldn't handle being a kindergarten teacher.

only armed with a gun could an 80 year old come close to being as dangerous as a 20 year old similarly armed.

Nobody said they're all power tripping ego maniacs. But some of them surely are. I personally met both. And the argument about 90% of people not being able to do the police job is irrelevant. I would love to see a cop perform brain surgery or write a USB device driver in assembly.

Police officers go on power trips not because they are disrespected but because of their position of power, same as politicians, famous athletes etc, people tend to listen to them and they are put in situation of influence over other human beings, this gets to their head if they are not strong enough, add the current mentality at "the force" and you have the perfect storm for the things that are happening in Toronto.

Roomie, it does not matter if any of us can do their jobs, it is irrelevant since we chose not to and they did, so they should accept the responsibilities and consequences and act accordingly

The point was people do nothing but ***** about the cops. What do you think we'd live in if there was none? Sure there are bad cops I'm not saying there aren't. If people would be respectful and normal in the first place you wouldn't hear about these stupid encounters that automatically make police bad guys.

Schneller, in the eyes of the law anyone with any weapon poses a threat. The law isn't designed to care if you're young or old. It's there to conform to. I'm not saying they couldn't have taken her down anyways but again, just like the moron kid on the street car, shouldn't have been there to begin with. There's a lot more details to surely come of the story about granny and three cops.

I agree but people who break the law to begin with should do the same no? That kid on the street car? He did that to himself. Granted I personally believe the cop was in the wrong, if the kid wasn't there in the first place it wouldn't have happened.

Sure, I wasn't replying to this particular situation, I am sure that if I was a cop, I wouldn't go and try to disarm someone with a knife terminator style, so maybe they were justified to use the taser, they were definitely not justified to shot someone 9 times. But if the cops are going to go all Rambo in our ***** every time someone steps out of line (mentally healthy or not), then why have cops, just allow each one of us to buy a gun or a taser and let us go at it, it seems the result will be the same.

Useless... well I take it back, they are very effective at giving people tickets!
