80 year old woman fractures hip after being tasered by police

... and a knife. Your statement still makes assumptions about the situation that aren't supported by the minimal information that we have; ie. that they would be able to surround her.

And dementia. A confused, befuddled, EIGHTY year old woman.

only if she had a gun could she have been considered dangerous.

police have to understand that they shouldn't treat people with mental disorders the same as everyone else. They are just not going to respond as they should to being yelled at to drop the weapon, or whatever.

and you don't treat an EIGHTY year old person like a 20 year old thug.

did I mention that she was EIGHTY years old?

:)

I was not there, am not entitled to opinion but I wonder how many cops on scene it would take for a tazering to seem "over the top"? 100?

I've experienced more threatening & assaultive behaviour from Ontario LEO's than I ever have from 80yr old grandmothers.

Or anyone else really.

So when can we start Tazering police in self defence?
"Your honour, I was surrounded by three fit, aggressive, men, after dark. Who at the minimum wanted to mug me to justify their arbitrated unionized salaries to fill their citation quota's, and at worst inflict bodily harm. I feel I was justified in my use of force..."

Yes, I believe that you mentioned something about her age. What was it again?

A terrier can cause you serious damage, regardless of its size. A person with a weapon can cause you serious damage, regardless of age or infirmity. Should people, police or otherwise, be required to put themselves in very real physical danger if there is another alternative, that might not be as dangerous to the subject as deadly force would be? Remember; since the advent of equal opportunity in policing, police are no longer uniformly the size of old English Bobbies.

One could always back away from the damage zone to see how the main sail sets.

This is true. I wonder how many police incidences have been escalated needlessly?

Undoubtedly quite a few, through actions of either side in the confrontation. The recent streetcar shooting is a prime example of when one side escalates, then the other seemingly escalates beyond reason.

Escalation above and beyond necessary from the police is the concern here. The police should try to contain situations, not use bad/threatening behaviour as reason to let loose. Pretty basic stuff. Police job is to maintain order and safe society. It's a very tricky calling at the best of times. Police officers should know this going into the profession. It's like fire fighting, don't be surprised to see a fire from time to time.

It doesn't matter which side the unnecessary escalation comes from. The result is the same for the general public; BAD.

I would think, by definition, it's always unnecessary from the offenders side. This is what the police should be trained and payed to deal with. If police have to escalate force to deal with it, so be it. The concern for all of us bystanders is the unnecessary escalation by the good guys. Next time it's you.
Have you ever had a police interface go south? It's not pleasant and shades your view forever and it's totally unnecessary.
