your reason for picking the bike you are riding now...

First time rider. I picked up a CBR 125 so i can properly learn to ride!

A month in and I can feel its vastly underpowered compared to everything else but I'm more of a technical rider. I want to make sure I earn my next set of wheels for skill and not just for speed.

Besides - I'm totally not afraid to open up this cheap little thing and learn the mechanics :)
I see you have been drinking the gtam cool aid

My CBR looks cool and it makes me look cool. I love to look at mirrors and when I ride by a building with reflective glass, I stare at my reflection. It makes me think how damn cool I look. I wish I could ride 24/7 because I would be cool all the time, but I have to sleep sometimes and I can't sleep on the bike. During those times, I am a little less cool.

I wanted a bike that was comfortable to ride long distances, had lockable hard luggage, lots of low and mid-range torque to haul my fat arse and a cargo trailer around, easy to maintain, parts not too terribly expensive, maintenance free final drive (I've done my time with chain drives, thank you very much), large dealer network and a vast aftermarket of shiny bits to personalise it to my tastes.

After some research and a few demo rides the short list consisted of a BMW GS, Victory Touring Kingpin, Kawasaki Vulcan Nomad, Moto Guzzi California and a Harley Road King. For various reasons (Wingboy's comments about the BMW echoed mine) the list was pared down to the Road King. The dealer crunched some numbers and told me that a Road Glide had all the things I wanted standard, with cruise and a stereo as an added bonus, for only $100 more than a Road King accessorised my way.

86,000km+ later and I'm still loving this Road Glide.

I just do not ride enough to warrant spending tons on a bike a friend of mine picked up a 2005 K1200s for $7500 last fall from the BMW store in Durham so if I see a deal like that, it'll be done.

I only ride early on Sunday and do take a Fridays off for a boot up north, so the FZ1 will have to do for now. Despite this still manage to do 7 000 K per year. Did a 300 K ride this morning and back in time for luncnh with the family.

Sounds very similar. I too updated from an old guy sports bike. The FZ1 is a great bike much like my ZRX1100. Upgrading to the K-bike however is like nothing I've ever ridden before. I found a well taken care of 2006 with extras for not much more than you friend paid. Don't be surprised if you don't stumble over one. Kijjii can bad very bad thing. I too could not justify paing full pop for a new K-bike though.

To answer the original post question. I wanted a bike with removable hard luggage that still looks nice when it is removed. The FJR was the other model I was thinking about.

24 years old + Insurance company = RIPOFF!
Hyo GT250R.. love the bike (2 years in) and insurance is tolerable

Z750S..wanted one for a while. Got a screaming deal on a fully accessorised one with Givi trunk/rack and touring screen...put a CF pipe on it to save myself from burning bits of me on the nasty OEM one and I have a nice, comfy riding position (except for the seat...using an airhawk right now) 110HP, torquey little fun machine with a sport touring insurance bracket.

I wanted to upgrade within a budget... then found this thing with scratches... but had low km and is a rare bike as a bonus, and now we're happily together riding~

lol. How many races to timmies has that yamaha won?

Tonnnnnes, gotta get there while the coffee is hot lol

I was more so speaking (with a hint of sarcasm) of MotoGP and WSBK lol.
