Judging from the sheer number of third party iPhone repair places, esp places that specialize in fixing cracked iphone screens, and I think its apparent this is a common issue. A quick google or kijiji search will confirm this.
When I bought my macbook a few years ago....I went to the apple store 1 month past the warranty expiry when my keyboard started acting up....
me: Hi my keyboard isnt working properly on my macbook.
apple genius dude : did you get the AppleCare?
me: No, this is my first apple computer, I thought this was a premium product and I paid a lot of money for it, and being only 1 month out of warranty I thought you guys could fix this.
apple genius dude : (after trying numerous reboots, yanking the battery out, etc) sorry, it'll cost you $200 to fix.
me : *gulp*....... f@%^ apple garbage.
.
The iPhone is the single best selling phone on the market. Not to mention that it's been out for five years now, in only three distinct designs. Of course people are going to break them and there are opportunities for people to repair them. Guess what I found when I googled Samsung cracked screen? People cracked their Samsung screens as well. It's glass after all, probably the exact same Corning glass as Apple uses. You drop it at the right angle, it's going to crack. A friend dropped her Asus tablet the other day and cracked the screen. It's not a bad product (at least in that regard), just bad luck.
I think it's ridiculous to not buy the Applecare warranty, it's cheap and the support is great. Most people keep their laptops for around three years, which is the same warranty period you get with Applecare. You don't even need to buy it from Apple, I bought the one for my first 15" Macbook off ebay and the Applecare for my second off Craigslist. Both were around $160 or so. The first Macbook got stolen before I got to take advantage of the Applecare. On my current Macbook, Applecare has paid for a new hard drive and a new screen. I'd say it's been worth the money.
Not to mention, it's not unheard of people getting brand new Macbooks as a replacement if parts aren't available or whatever the situation is for their old one.
Apple really does have the best warranty support out there. Only tech companies that compare in my books are Dell and Logitech. With Dell, years back I bought a Nokia N800 from them which had an issue. They sent me a brand new one and asked me to send the old one back once I received the new one. Similar with Logitech, my MX Revolution mouse (~$100) started acting up, they sent me a brand new one in a retail box, didn't ask for the old one back.
I've said this before in this thread, but it's worth restating. What really turned me onto Apple was their support. Back when I had an iPhone 3G, it died on me while in Miami (likely due to a bad car charger). Found the Apple Store in South Beach at 11pm on a Saturday night. They exchanged it with an AT&T iPhone so I could access the internet over wifi while in the states and then swapped it for a Fido unit once I got back home. Apple offered to send me a Fido one but it would take a couple of days that I didn't have. I really can't imagine any other company doing that.
If a company wows me with support, I'll be a customer of theirs forever. If they piss me off, I'll never buy from them again (unless whatever product is dirt cheap)
Totally unrelated, but just an example. The case for my Maui Jim sunglasses came unglued, they mailed me a new one without question. The case for my Ray Ban's cracked when opening it one winter morning, they told me to go buy another. The Maui Jim's were twice the price of the Ray Ban's, but I would rather buy them now.
