Who's still riding? (Fall & Winter 2018 Edition)

I should have probably wore one more layer today but very tolerable,
most notable problem - heavier gloves suck for sportbike thumb controls, BMW controls are way superior and the fairing is awesome at speed so that's my street ride for the rest of this season.

? can motorcycles run studied tires in ontario ? and if not then why not ?
Studded tires were a terrific safety device that was banned in southern ontario because they were chewing up the roads, no way would winter motorcycle traffic make an impact.

Well, I'm calling it early; I wore winter mitts on the commute today

BTW does anyone here have experience with motorcycle snow tires?

I put on a set of Anlas winter tires on my V-Strom last year. I wasn't intending to ride in snow but got them as a precaution in case. On the odd bit of snow and ice I got into I can't say they were any better than the Tourance Next tires I ride with. I also didn't think they were as good on cold (near freezing) wet roads as the Next and certainly weren't as good on muddyish unpaved roads.

Thanks Tom. I'm not planning on going out in the snow, but it has happened once this year already. My sport touring tires are getting a little low on tread. Okay for summer but not for slush. The tourance tires don't come in my size. Maybe some dual sport tires would be better for the winter.
The other option in my size is heidenau k66

From the Tirecraft website:

[h=3]Ontario[/h]
In Ontario, studded winter tires are permitted between September 1st and May 31st for drivers in northern Ontario, which includes as Algoma, Cochrane, Kenora, Manitoulin, Nipissing, Parry Sound, Rainy River, Sudbury, Thunder Bay, and Temiskaming. Below these areas, the use of studded tires could incur a fine. For drivers from outside of Ontario, studded tires can be used while travelling in the province for up to a month. During this period, the only acceptable studs are Scandinavian-made lightweight studs.

Nothing MC specific. I bet if you had them it would be years before a cop gave you a fine, unless you were riding in a snowstorm and they pulled you over to say you were crazy and you said "Yeah but they're studded tires".

Yeah my weather app is seeing possible mix of rain and snow for both saturday and sunday. That's my cue for storage, so last rip will be Tuesday by the looks of things.

Re: Who's still riding? (Fall & Winter 2018 Edition)

Ouch not Heidenau ....very hard compound. Try Mitas - maybe e07s

Re: Who's still riding? (Fall & Winter 2018 Edition)

I could see the police looking for an excuse to give out a ticket to a motorcyclist riding in the snow just to discourage them from riding

The k66 is a four season tire, so I'd guess it would be softer than other heidenau models.

There isn't a lot of options in dual sport 17" tires. I've been tempted to try shinko 705's

I've been running Shinko 805's for 2 seasons now on my versys 650 with 17" rims. I'm very happy with them overall. The 705 is likely better for your intended use though.

That's brine damage from one ride on a 2016 DL650X.

That's impressive. I think Tom and I have been riding our Stroms in and out of brine for many winters and I still don't have that happening.
And I don't even grease my axel sticks.
That said, I don't think I will be riding this weekend.

If all I did was looked out the window this morning I would have ridden into work. it was rather nice in Port Perry. I knew that there was snow on the way in so drove today.

We had issues corrosion on some wheel nuts of our cars and it was traced to using aggressive cleaning solutions on them. I wonder if the riders with all this corrosion clean their bikes too much and what they use?

Re: Who's still riding? (Fall & Winter 2018 Edition)

I'm not sure I would call any of that "Damage". Unprotected metal exposed to even just rainwater will also corrode.

Glad I got out last weekend, haven't been out since. My desire to ride in anything aside from quasi-enjoyable conditions this year is lacking.

I did however order some heated gear (gloves and a vest) from China a few days ago...probably won't get it until a week or so before Christmas (gifts for my wife who's very much a cold weather hater), but I will post a review of such when it arrives. $29 for a heated vest and $12 for the gloves was too hard to resist trying out. The reviews seem to indicate they're actually both pretty decent, with the reviews of the vest actually being quite good. Time will tell.

Those pics are from my '16. It was new in 17, that was the damage from a little local riding last winter. Here's the bike:

Oooooo that does not bode well for Suzuki anti-corrosion coating measures.
Have you ever seen how they destructive test automotive parts, they spray the parts with a brine fog then let it stand dry and repeat, so basically they emulate a Toronto street in winter: https://autotechnology.com/testing/cyclic-corrosion/
Agreed. I have a Goldwing and Yamahas that are 30 to 40 years old -- they have seen winter conditions and don't look as bad as my 2016 Wee.

Planned to hit Bancroft today -- it was bone chilling. Got to Bobcaegeon and turned back. Been home since 5PM, still feel chilled from being wet and sub 5c for a few hours.

Not daunted, I'll be riding to work until snow tires are required.

I have my eye on next Saturday at this point, if the current forecast holds.

I guess I should close my pool today while it's not raining. :D
