Who's still riding? (Fall & Winter 2018 Edition)

My season is done.. took a fall this morning braking to hard on some wet leaves.. bike is a little scratched up so no big deal but i fractured my forearm..yay!

No clue how I'm going to get my bike in storage..

Ouch!! Hope you feel better soon,
I'm done, put my bike away a couple days ago.

...And to some the worst thing is that their bikes instantly decompose into a pile of rust at the first indication of it.) :)

So true. My friend rode her FZ1 up north last year to have suspension work done over the winter. The shop promised to rinse down the bike but forgot -- her brand new FZ1 looked 10 yrs old. Same for my new Vstrom - brine ate thru plating in one season on spokes, brake fittings an most fasteners. I

Plating on spokes???....are they not stainless steel? I don't think modern bikes suffer much from brine unless you try and wash it off all the time especially with recycled water.

You'd think snowmobiles would be piles of junk.

Here's to hoping that the weather warms up for November when I come back from BC....just bought the damn bike!

Finally some good riding,

Went out to Elora & Fergus. Chilly Morning, but the afternoon was decent.

I wish. I'll post pics tomorrow of what salt & brine did to a new Vstrom.

I'll probably do my version of winterizing the bikes this weekend - spraying them down with acf50 and keep riding. I have some heated grips coming and have never had them before so looking forward to that.

A note for those whose bikes decompose at the first hint of salt on the roads:

I noticed last night when I rode home from work (after 9pm.) I noticed that a good part of Bloomington had been brined. I am not sure where it started (I rode Bloomington from Keele to Goodwood)but I think it was Yonge to Leslie. I am sure many more roads will shortly be brined.

Brine has been on some roads since last week already in the Aurora, Newmarket area. Especially on the 404 entry and exit ramps - asphalt was completely white. Haven't seen the stuff out this early since I can remember. Got one bike winterized in time, next one will later in November. Hoping for some good rain and warmer temps to wash some of it away to get a decent ride in before the last one is stored. They're calling for snow this weekend though so I'm not optimistic.

I learned my lesson with brine when I started street riding back in '02. I was so excited to ride my brand new CBRF4i I'd bought over the winter that I took it out on wet days in early march a few times and by the end of the season all engine fasteners were rusted along with other components. I was shocked... and ****** since I keep my bikes a long time.

For those who care, my best advice would be to not ride on brined covered roads when they're wet (like I did), that stuff is nasty. If you're going to ride on brine covered roads, do it when it's dry. Or (and ideally), completely cover your bike in ACF-50 (sans brake rotors) like the above poster mentioned.

FWIW I have been riding on roads that had been brined, both wet and dry, since I got my first V-Strom in 2006. (I'm in my third.) My 2006 was retired at 202,000+ km, my 2012 was sold at 139,500 km, and my 2015 has over 153,000 km and have never had any issues with rusting although center and side stand pivot points need to be lubed a bit more often than they would in summer.

Well that's incredible.

Yowza! How do you manage to rack up so many kms?! That's awesome.

I just ride a lot! :)

Actually lots of commuting... a few big rides, weekend rides, etc. My bike is pretty much my go-to vehicle from sometime in March until sometime in November-December. I pretty much ride all the time except if there is (or is likelihood) of ice and snow on the roads. temperature, winds or rain don't stop me, just the ice and snow (and even then I have been caught a few times.)

Well, to each his own. This is the close of my 16th season on my ST1100 and I intend to keep it another 3 - 5 years so I also have a vested interest in keep it relatively corrosion free + I find the riding pretty marginal in Nov. and most of the winter. I store the ST in Mississauga, am I really going to ride up to the Kawarthas to do a 507, Glamorgan, 56 etc.... loop in January when I've done these roads 150 + times over the years in better weather? I'm very content to store the ST until spring.

Another +6 commute home tonight that didn't feel like it. Nice and windy this aft.
