Who's still riding? (Fall 2016 / Winter 2017 edition)

crazy windy and brrr today, but did see a guy on an older 90s CB blast by me around noon. I've got to find a bearable enough of a 30min window to ride my bike to my work and keep there for the winter. Nice an toasty, and ready to ride at a moments notice if we are so blessed with anymore days

-1 ...feels like -10 ...even smells like winter....and a smattering of snow - wind in the 40 kph gusting to 60 ...can we say hypothermia weather :(

Strangely enough I have read in my ultralight pilot training training that hypothermia is most likely to occur in conditions around +10 (iirc.) In colder temperatures people tend to be very aware of how cold it is since the can obviously feel it's cold out. But a warmer temperature people tend to go out with lighter clothes (like t-shirts!) and not realize the heat is getting sucked out of them. There are many parallels between the open cockpit flying I was doing and riding.

Interesting, that sounds similar to warm water hypothermia.

Anyhow, rapid temperature drop, limited salting in the west end and standing snow on the bridges. Not much, but it certainly indicates cold asphalt. Fingers crossed for a rebound. Managed to score a car for today by sheer luck.

Yes....hypothermia is insidious....I recall snorkelling for hours in the Caribbean and coming out blue despite an 88 F water temperature and 110 F air temp.

Right at freezing tho or just above ....the transfer of heat is highest into the air as the density is highest ....once it crosses to freezing the air is dryer so less transfer.
Damp cold is the killer.

600km loop to Rosseau for lunch and back on Friday. 7:30am departure was a tad chilly, but man was it worth the vacation day!

he killer is not being aware that the heat loss is happening.

Yup - found that out in PA when I had a cotton tshirt as an underlayer in a late autumn ride and got sweaty hiking down to the fallen bridge ....could not figure what was going on - teeth chattering and core getting colder and colder
....spent a good while in a change room drying stuff out - never wore cotton again.
The run home was 8 C and raining but no cotton, not wet, no hypothermia.

Got a decent dusting of snow here today, enough to make things white. 500000 tons of salt everywhere, total overkill.

To the east through the Cobourg to Trenton area lots and lots of sand and enough snow to make 2-3 foot snowbanks in some areas where it's been plowed.

But hey, rain on Friday and 6 degrees on Saturday.

(Trying to stay positive.....)

AMEN!!!Love the positivity bud.... I really hope to change the engine oil and get that one final ride before I store (better perhaps....don't put it in storage at all..haah)

I need to drain the regular gas out of my wifes bike and at least get it up to the local Shell station to fill it up with no Ethanol and add stabilizer then mix it up and ride home to circulate it all.

My VTX is already full to the brim with premium and stabilizer, but I need to get it out for 10 minutes or so to get it through the fuel system as I couldn't add the stabilizer until I got home that day - forgot it on the shelf before heading out.

So there's at least 2 more rides (albeit short and probably frigid) left in the season for me, but they won't be very far.

Yep, I changed my gear oil and coolant since I didn't know when was it last changed (bought the bike from someone earlier..)
Then rode to get get some premium fuel in and added stabiliser and rode back.

I want to put a new air filter, change the engine oil, and oil filter this weekend. Hopefully, once all gets changed, I can sneak it out for a ride.

Praying hard to the sun god and the rain god. Need rains on Friday and sun on Saturday. I can then ride on Saturday noon...yay

TWN is calling for the weekend to be 8oC (or maybe more in TO) with reasonable conditions on Sunday. If only we could trust TWN this many days out...

If that forecast holds you should probably buy another can of Stabil coz you're gonna burn through a tank or more :)

I'm itching to ride, but damn it, don't want to dress like the michelin man...

and man, riding in the summer _without_ gear is A-W-E-S-O-M-E !!!!!

(sometimes, its worth the risk!!!)

Get yourself some heated gear, it's totally worth the cost and mild inconvenience. Back in the saddle today, yippee! Up to 7C by Friday. December 24th or BUST.

this is my first winter as a rider. damn i rode in to work today and everything was completely fine EXCEPT my hands. i have a pair of regular but thin cotton gloves underneath my normal (but thin) motorcycle gloves and they were freezing as ****. gonna have to get something better. in about 20 minutes i could barely feel my hands.

Surprised there's not snapped valve stems everywhere. Oh wait, sorry, that was another thread. ;)
