What's Your Temperature Cut-Off For Riding?

Anyone remember "Hippo Hands"? My old buddy Jim Kelly uses them on his Honda ice racer in On any Sunday.

Yeah I think I had Hippo Hands back in the 70s - they do work - ugly as sin.
Can't use them on the Burgman as it blocks the mirrors.
Was okay today but can't go much lower without doing something about hands - was down to 8

not sure its worth the effort this late in the season as most rides will be local

Wednesday looks good tho and next Sat but I'll be away :( Oh well decent weather to cage it to Chicago.

Riceburner, you're really on to something there, those are pretty neat.

Thanks. Depending on the bodywork it could work for many. I've got some extra sheets if anyone wants a couple.

I've even used half a windshield washer bottle strapped to the bars on my naked bike in the past. Blue ones. Looked like the Barkbuster covers until you looked close. :D

Got 300k in at 8-10 degrees - then after dark did another 50k at 7 and was okay tho hands and feet could feel the cold - was not unpleasant so felt good about that. Still have one extra layer available top and bottom so 5 looks to be okay and lower on short jaunts.
Glad we dodged what eastern PA got.

Mirror position on the Burgman makes handshielding an issue :(

On my dads Burgman I am able to use 'hippo hands' or 'atv mitts' without blocking the mirrors.

Well - get out there ....coming soon to a highway near you

same storm

I could just see riding the bike down highway 10 from Flescherton with that coming down......eastern PA is not all that far away in a straight line and the wind was from the sought yesterday ..... :(

Hippo Hands - you might be taller or sit differently ( I have 3rd party seat ) but my line of vision to the mirrors just clears the brake levers so could only use something that was slim.
With the heated grips I'll likely just suck it up.

Did almost 500kms with heated grips, hands/fingers weren't cold at all.

Hippo hands just look too cumbersome to me.

I have problems with my hands anyways from too many years with drop bars and some resulting nerve damage so I image good circulation will help. :D
HH are cumbersome - but I remember wearing them riding in snow storms in University and they were reaaaaaaaaallly good ....no heated grips then.

For all it's upfront protection - the Burgman funnels wind right on to your hands :(

Thanks for the pics! That's a pretty simple solution to that problem. I'll see if I can copy you. :)

Just looking ahead to available (warmish) riding opportunities.......I think Wednesday afternoon looks good (could be half day of work) and Saturday. Beyond that, it could be a crapshoot. Getting all my winterizing supplies in place for the inevitable.

If its 5 in the morning and a high of 10 during the day.
I've got a heated vest now, and its so cozy, like sitting in front of a fireplace. Hate pluggin in and out though

Ride up until there is ice forming on the roads. Then it's only a short wait until sled season.
I only put 3000k on this year. Way less than my 8000 in 2009. 2010 I put on 0. Don't join the army if you want time to ride!!

Tell your commanding officer riding a dirt bike is good for reconnaissance missions. Easy to maneuver and escape in the sands of Afghan

Was checking my bike out while I was riding and that wouldn't work for me:( I wonder if those dirt bike ones would fit on my handle bars...

Did about 250km today. 10 degrees out wasn't too bad. Soooo happy to be out riding!
