What's Your Temperature Cut-Off For Riding?

It's one thing to pad yourself with a flat layer of newspaper in between your shirt and your jacket, but to stuff it into your gloves...well, that's...something else.

Wuss. Gotta go Jedi riding.....use the force :lmao:
if only i had as good a teacher as Obi Wan

yea.. im too poor to get heated gloves. and i doubt heated grips will solve the issue of freezing fingertips. so ill give this a go and report back. *fingers crossed* otherwise i might have to stop riding for this season :(

It stops the wind from going through and insulates. Wearing warm layers and a rain suite over your gear would help as well.
huh. so i guess it works good in the cold? i just wear multiple layers and im usually okay. could try stuffing some newspaper in the gloves..

LOL.
i actually did that last night. but only one eye at a time.

Got a pair of gloves from MEC they have a removalbe outer layer which is water proof and if they dont fit over your gloves they are thin enough to wear in your gloves. They helped on my sat and sunday rides and was warmer than wearing my bike specific cold weather gloves. Oh and less bulky.

I will find the golve and post here. Also you can wear these gloves any time not just while riding which is a bonus:)

Here is the link. The pic is only showing the inner layer. Read the description....

My neck was freezing and I ran into a buddy and he had a leather neck dickie (don't know where the perverted name came from). Anyway, five mins from the Forks (Erin) is R&R, that's where he got his, and they had them for $30. My neck went from freezing to toasty warm. Leather outer, soft fabric inner. They go up into your lid and down into your coat (front and back) so there's no wind getting to your neck anywhere. For those of you on a budget, go to the dollar store and buy some of those navy style black winter hats. Cut one end of the hat off, and put it over your head, and strap your lid strap to it. Same idea, just something I used to do pre-neck-dickie. Seriously, who named this thing? lol

Was thinking about getting a neck protector. The last time I was at the track I was looking at a rider all geared up everything protected except for the neck and was thinking man we are so dumb for not protecting one of the most vunerable spots on our bodies.

How does it feel riding with one on?

I got 3 in 1 gloves from CT and they work pretty well, outer shell is decent on it's own and the inner glove is good down to 8 or so with the outer shell on.

Not sure anyone would wear just the inner glove ( the 3 option )

Have velcro to keep the two gloves aligned.

Decent is all - back of hands get chilly below 8 or so.

I have one of these with a bib front and back but it's a half balaclava rather than full over the head
works a charm

I do recognize the bikes Stormcat. You guys/girls turned off of 10 onto Hockley as me and a red 1198 were pulling up to the lights onto 10. All of you waved. I couldn't see your frozen eyeballs tho lol. I had my GoPro on my lid. I'll see if you guys/girls are on the video, and if there's any frost on your eyelashes lol.

You were at Hockley too, eh? Parked at the front? Recognize these bikes? I'm on the left of the pic on the silver CBR:

lol my bad I thought you were talking actual protection, not just from the cold. Ha ha ha you got a dickie;) Seriously though I saw so many people with thoughs this sunday. They look really warm.

I'm impressed that you remembered us. Must have seen hundreds of bikes out yesterday. I have GoPro footage too, btw. :)

Ahhh, you're talking about a Hans-like device. Not sure that would be a good idea on a bike as you need your neck to rotate and rotate fast. It would be too obtrusive. But you are right, it's an area that's very vulnerable.

I don't know how you ride with all those layers on. I would feel like H.R. Puffinstuff lol. How do you maneuver?

Yes, every bike in Ontario must have been out yesterday! I notice red as most people do, and I noticed this particular red bike as the rider was quite involved and made the effort to wave. Everyone was waving yesterday!

Another dollar store trick I've used since I don't do much cold riding is those fingerless winter gloves. I bought a whole bunch of them. They come with a mitten part attached that flips over. So they just slide over my gauntlets, and when fingers start to get chilly, I put the mitten part over my fingers. They're black, so I can still look hard as nails with mittens on lol.

I found my cut off last night. I was travelling at 1am from Welland Ontario back to Toronto (130kms), across the 406 then the QEW. The weather page said it was around 5c when i left, but there is no way in hell it was that warm. Felt like closer to 0, and the wind was intense, found myself being blown around a few times when trucks passed and going over the burlington skyway, mighty chilly up there!. Might of helped if i had a full face helmet and not a halfy lol. Definitely not gonna attempt anymore night highway rides this year without a proper helmet and some warmer gear.. Brrrrr....

Zero gegrees celsius for me, give or take a coupe degrees, depending on wind, wet, and how sunny it is.

Johnny5
Unlikely anywhere close to zero anywhere near the lakes but it was very windy and 5 would be bloody cold even with gear on.

Was 10 tonight and chilly but nice with good gear.
( Balaclava on the heavy side with bib front and back, full windshield, face shield ( 3/4 helmet ), ballistic jacket with liner, dual layer gloves with heated grips, poly long johns. and a lot of up front protection on the Burgman )
Even with that my toes are cold and thumbs felt it in the wind.
Would help if I did up the vents in the ballistic - was so warm earlier I opened them and forgot.
Really was nice this aft except for the wind.

You would have froze at 5 with no gear and highway speeds. = instant hypothermia. Surprised you made 130 km....indeed a very good lesson.
The temps drop like a stone once the sun goes down this time of year.

No temperature cut-off for me. Whenever I feel like riding I'll ride but I havent felt like riding lately.

Rode through a full blown snowstorm at 9000ft, cars in the ditch and all. Probably -10 plus windchill...not that I'd do it again but with the proper gear, its aiiiiiiiiiiite.

Was nice this aft much to my surprise - got 100k in and out of the house - was gorgeous on the way home just after sunset.

Rain tho....bleh in this temp.

For long distance, my season is done, for home-work commute its 0 degrees. I did travels over 300km's at 7 degrees, but I had quite a few layers of clothes over me.
