What did you do in your garage today..?

put the cover on my sled......

Long story short. I've been storing my bike at my brother's house in his garage. I recently moved, and can now store it at my place. So a few days ago when the weather was decent I decided to pop the battery back in and bring it over to the new place. Except that while trying to hook it up, I noticed that one of the square nuts from the battery terminal was missing.

I was doing all of this before work, so time wasn't on my side and I had to McGuyver something... I ended up just using some strips of aluminum foil tape.

On a scale of 1-10, how close was I to blowing myself up? 10 being bursting in to flames on the 401.

Surprised it started. Once it was going your foil tape is unconventional but ok for a short run. I know one guy that ram visegrips clamping off a leaking brake line for years.

not even close. we jump started one DRZ400 with another one using wrenches as jumper cables

Any sandcast Lash?

Homemade fusible link. Well done Sparky.

You could have just held it there with your finger while starting. Once started, the alternator should have been able to supply enough power to any electronics to get you going. The tape is just keeping it from flapping. Good MacGuyver'ing, though.

Zip tie might have worked better if you could pull it tight enough.
Hard to beat a bolt or c-clamp or small vice grips for clamping battery terminals on.

Buddies switchgear malfunctioned on his HD Electra Glide while we were doing a 10-state tour a couple years back. Keyed toggle part was also busted. Bike never died while riding oddly but a few times randomly started itself in the parking lot.
Thankfully it's a loud bike so if we were in a restaurant or hotel room we would hear it start and could go outside and turn it off.
Not surprisingly it also had one of it's chrome engine farkles fall off while running the Dragon on that trip.
