You can either do the library method, or find them through other "sources"

This is why I stayed away from Kindle, the Kobo and other readers allow for much more variety in terms of files (ePub, doc, pdf, etc.) whereas Kindle has their own ecosystem and are trickier.

No different than the old days of sharing music / video files. Kobo FTW in this aspect. Much easier to share.


I couldn't believe it the first time I had to 'wait' to loan a book from TPL. Like WTF...it's a digital copy! Apparently they only have X licenses, and those are loaned out same as physical books.

Kindle now supports ePub by default, they are moving away from the Kindle Mobi proprietary format.

Niall Harbison “Hope”. About a guy who hit rock bottom with drugs/alcohol etc. went off to Thailand and discovered meaning by rescuing and helping street dogs.

Really nicely written book. Plus all the proceeds go to the rescue.

He’s on Twitter and a few other places too. I read the posts whenever they pop up as they are pretty touching and a reminder that some people are good people.
 
Been trying this Kindle App on my phone.
Not bad.
Convenient because its always with you but I think it gets my eyes tired staring at a 6 inch screen in high brightness. (at the end of the day I am trying to limit my screen time)
A dedicated kindle device would maybe resolve the screen/size but that's another device to take with you. At that point I would just take a paper copy of the book.

I don't read more than 1 book at a time anyways.
 
No shortage of laptops or screens

I don't like sitting in bed with a laptop.

I can’t read on the iPad at all. The brightness hurts the eyes, it glares horribly in the open air…get a dedicated unit that has the e-ink. Such a better experience.

Guess the only place an iPad or tablet is better is for graphic novels.

A used Kindle Paperwhite can usually be found for around $50. Try it out and see if it works for you

I tried iPad and phone before and it's ok but gets really tiring on the eyes. Kindle is a night and day difference.
 
Brightness can be turned down - current Apple screens with HDR support can be blistering bright - even my 5 yr old MacBook Retina 13" is 500 nits and the 14" I will move to is 1,000nits - great for movies - not so much for reading....one reason using the sepia option in Calibre is useful.

I like to be able to change the font size and screen resolution when my eyes tire...I find a paperbook intolerable for more than a few minutes.
Partner on the other hand prefers them tho her eyes are so imbalanced I'm not surprised reading on screens is problematic for her.

A paperwhite Kindle would be my only comfortable alternative.

Good to know. Looking to buy an updated reader as both my original Kindle and Kobo died on me.

But I do love the audiobooks for the drive.

Was going to suggest the Kindle Paperwhite Signature that I have, but Amazon jacked up the price from the ~$100 I paid to $170 from their used warehouse.

They do have the previous gen Paperwhite, used, for $50 though. Easier on a plane. Just have to figure how to import my ePub books
  1. Go to Send to Kindle.
  2. Click 'Add your Files'
  3. Upload an ePub file.
  4. Click 'Add to your Library'
  5. Hit 'Send'
  6. Wait for the file to process.
  7. Go to the Library on your Kindle.
  8. Download the book.

I'm not fancy, just google book title + epub and there are a bunch of results. Some scammy, some real
