While waiting on next books in GRRM series I stumbled across this stand alone prequel to GOT and what a surprise, probably the best short stories book of all of them! Too bad it's only 365 pages...

Ted Chiang wrote the short story which the movie Arrival is based on. It's in the collection, "Story of your life and others". Love the ideas behind his writing, but less prose, more narrative. Reminds me of early Asimov.

I don't have enough time in the summer for long books, so I went back to Chiang's short stories again. Just finished this collection:

My Kindle says I read it, but I'm a quarter way through and I don't remember any of the stories. A good, quirky read. She makes me laugh on the outside and cry on the inside at the same time. 🥲

I was of the same mindset. I was forced into it because the series I am reading, many of the books are out of print and quite valuable. Over $100.00 per book in many cases.
So I picked up a used Kindle Oasis. It's a better experience than anticipated and there are things that beat the physical copy. It's always at the right page when you pick it up, no more bookmarks falling out.

I will say that when I have to plug in my book to charge it I feel that the future is stupid.

You can check out digital copies from the library.
The funny part, they only have so many digital copies, so you could be waiting for someone to return (timeout) their digital book before you can download it.......

Yup.... the future is stupid.

Sure you can. Just takes some creative activities.

This is why I stayed away from Kindle, the Kobo and other readers allow for much more variety in terms of files (ePub, doc, pdf, etc.) whereas Kindle has their own ecosystem and are trickier.

No different than the old days of sharing music / video files. Kobo FTW in this aspect. Much easier to share.

I couldn't believe it the first time I had to 'wait' to loan a book from TPL. Like WTF...it's a digital copy! Apparently they only have X licenses, and those are loaned out same as physical books.
 
You would think that with a digital copy it would be easier to return a book. An expiry date needs to coded into the programming and it would be automatically returned.

It is automatically returned. I've had multiple instances where I'm listening / reading to a book, and it disappears because the time period expired.

So they do have that encoded in automatically.
