We Know you Ride, But do you Shoot?

Re: We know you ride, but do you Shoot?

Unlike Johnny, I have little use for restricted rifles as I prefer shooting out on crown land and leaving the option open to hunt with my rifles.

What non-restricted semi-automatic rifles that can take AR mags are available in Canada?

What I can think of:
SU-16 ($800)
Benelli MR1 ($1600)
T97 ($1000)
XCR ($2500)
Tavor ($2700)

Any others?

I dont eat game meat so I cant justify hunting just yet, although my machine technician hunts turkey with a crossbow. I think I would try that because I have a strange urge to try deep frying a whole turkey.... So I might be in for some shot gun hunting or birds that I would actually eat.

As for now I will sit alone in my basement playing with handguns and restricted rifles. I got a call this morning saying my ATT is ready, so I can pick up my new gun today, and I just got to work and my Glock gunsmithing mat came in. I have a bunch of mods on the way, I have actually already spend more then I spent on the gun itself on mods and accessories. Waste of money for most but worth it for me, as it will keep me busy and give me an opportunity to learn how to build and modify a simple hand gun.

I know its like buying a hatch back Honda Civic and modding it out, but to each their own

Re: We know you ride, but do you Shoot?

then you start doing stuff like this

to this

Nice work did you hand polish that or use a buffing wheel? I used to do a lot of polishing work on my motorcycle way back, dirty job for sure

Since the Glock is polymer Im looking into buying a wood burning iron and practicing stippling, then I want to attempt to stipple my grip.

Re: We know you ride, but do you Shoot?

some of it by hand, some on the wheel.....

I don't like the stipple, it's too coarse and can't be changed, better off getting a pachmyer grip (sp)

I really like the look, and you can control the amount of grip by the size of depth of the pin holes you make using a very small pointed tip. Problem is I dont know of any shops that offer it locally, so I would have to do it myself or find someone on the forums willing to do it...I called double tap and they suggested Talon grip, I dont like the way its cut to fit, looks like it doesnt match the profile of the grip properly because the stuff cant bend enough to take the curves. Its cheap though so I might use it for now, how much does a rubber cover like that cost?

I bought all my parts from Glockworx and they do amazing stippling and grip mods, but I cant send the frame to them to get it done...

Basically this is what Im building

Re: We know you ride, but do you Shoot?

Ar platform seems hard to beat, just might sell me on one for a first rifle

That's because it's the Honda Civic of rifles.. The aftermarket is insane. Most long gun shooting sports are built around it, it's based on a proven military platform and it's also a common hunting gun south of the border. It can be whatever you want it to be - from a beat up truck gun, to a streamlined race gun to a pimpin' wallhanger. The ammo is dirt-cheap for rifle ammo, almost as cheap as 7.62x39 surplus. The huge following also means that you have plenty of guys all over the place who know the gun inside and out, so if you're looking for advice, it's easy to find. If you're looking for a poodleshooter you'll actually be shooting, can't think of a better platform in Canada. In the US, I might be tempted by an AK, also because of the huge following/aftermarket, legendary reliability and nostalgic reasons, even if it costs me a few extra seconds per stage lol

Well I did some more reading and some Canadian guys said the MR223 can also use pistol mags, but when I was at TS today they said they weren't sure if they could get one.The only reason they have the MR308 is someone custom ordered it and backed out, otherwise they dont normally order $5500 guns for stock. The uppers and lowers dont fit but the 223 is supposed to be close to the AR platform. Either way it would be a range gun, so I was thinking bigger bang with the 762 lol

Side note anyone know a local store who carries 9mm snap caps? TS didnt have any, and Sail hand everything but 9mm. How bad is dry firing the gun without a snapcap? What would it damage most the pin?

CCW would be great to have in Canada - there are a few ATC holders, but they're pretty scarce. I have a New Hamshire and Utah CCW permit. Never carried in either state though.

You gotta be connected up to the ying yang to get one of those ......... not for ordinary members of Canadian societies "great unwashed" like most of us.

Re: We know you ride, but do you Shoot?

What most northern Ontarians call "the bush".
The only crown land near where I live is the lawn around Queen's Park.

The 308 will cost you a lot more to shoot even if you reload.. I'm not sure about the glocks, but it's a non issue on the Shadow platform and you can pull the trigger a lot more times on one of those than on a Glock as it's a DA/SA pistol, so no need to rack the slide.

For you it's quite different because it seems everything for you relates to competition. For me just like motorcycle I have a bike for each purpose, a stunt bike, a street bike, track bike, and a supermoto. All are very expensive to buy and maintain.

So if I buy a $5500 rifle that comes with no sights or optics and put another $2000-3000 in mods on it. We'll then $3 a bullet isn't going to break the bank at that point. If I was interested in something cheap to buy and shoot I'd be looking at something else for sure . If when I do ever decide to try competition I would buy guns to suit those needs. Although 2 of the guys at the store compete in ipsc with glocks, do it is doable. So yeah I get it, more expensive to buy, maintain, and shoot, that's just my style blowing money for no good reason

I spent $750 + tax on the pistol, haven't even fired it yet and I have spent double that amount on mods already. So it's pretty clear I'm not looking for seething that is cost effective or factory competition worthy.

I also plan to use higher end higher grain bullets, people say the glock will eat up any ammo, but I'd still shell out for better stuff instead of 115 grain cheap stuff. I don't even want to reload yet maybe one day for now I'll shoot boxs if new stuff.

Snap caps I want for practicing and to check functions after installing the mods. Probably doesn't matter about pin damage in my case, because my trigger kit comes with a new pin, and I've ordered a new slide so those will be replaced anyways

Tore it down last night and I'm amazed at the keep it stupid simple tech on it. Thing strips down completely with a pin. And the frame alone feels like a toy gun from the dollar store. Looking at how it's made I can't believe it works so well
