Trying something new

Why did you switch up the pegs? Is that a common thing for SM bikes? I figured you would want to keep the motocross style ones simply for the wider surface area and grip

I'm actually debating on getting one of these HammerHead rear brakes. I had a rock hit mine hard enough to bend the tip and break part of the front weld of the tip... Thought I blew my crank shaft with the noise it made!

I hate the MX style pegs, Im a sport bike guy and I prefer the feel of round pegs over the flat surface pegs

Johnny, get rid of those pegs, you'll regret them riding SM.

These are the ONLY pegs you want for an SM bike

These are the best shifters/brake pedals available as well.

Im going to try my round pegs first, I do not like the feel of the flat surface pegs. I cant see how I wont like them I have them on all my bikes, even my CRF50 supermoto.
If they suck I'll just use them on my other bikes as I have not modified the actual pegs at all...
...And yeah Hammerhead stuff it really nice I have one of their shift levers, but their green anodize makes me want to puke......Maybe later, right now the stock ones should do the trick for this beginner

By the looks of the round pegs im guessing your not a fan of the dirt section on a supermoto track.

I have never done SM, hence the title of the thread being "trying something new"....To answer your question specifically, even thou I have never been on a SM track let alone one with a dirt section, I am more interested in the road section and specifically backing into corners and drifting. I may get into the dirt sections and jumps later on who knows, but for now that is not my main interest or reason for building this bike...

Most likely I will cone up parking lots and just having fun on my own, for the most part....I would like to attend some track days later when I am comfortable, I have just started to ride again after a bad accident 6 months ago....

And they are just $60 pegs, 2 cotter pins and I can remove them and replace them with MX pegs...Not like I am welding them onto the bike, if I have to or want to I can change them back to stock or aftermarket MX pegs...

My Spiegler lines came in, had the front custom made to fit my Brembo caliper and master. And finally my rims came in! They arrived late Friday so I would not have gotten them delivered to me until Wed, so I took a little trip up to pick them up from Tony at Blue Streak Racing in Embro this afternoon...Since Marchensini wouldnt make me set for the KX450 I bought a set they had left over for an older KX250, they sent me CAD drawings and everything looked to be an exact fit except the front rotor mounting adapter. And I was right, all I have to do is machine up a new adapter to accept the 450 rotor. Now the next problem is Braking after 2-1/2 months of having my front rotor on order, decide to tell us just now that they aren't going to make the front rotor anymore...THANKS! So Tues Im going to rush order a Brembo or Braketech rotor, whatever is in stock....Oh and I need to pick up some rubber.....

Does anyone think I will have rubbing issues with a 160 rear and that spacing between the swingarm?

Not sure if this will help, but on my DR-Z400SM, I have a 160 Dunlop Q2 and there is some minor chain rubbing on the tire, using the factory chain guide. It appears that there is similar clearance from my rim to the swingarm, but it's a different bike and just some cell phone pics with no real measurement. Hope it helps

Thanks.....How wide is your rear rim?

It would really help if there is any way you could measure from the edge of the rim to the edge of the tire for me. So I can get an idea of how much the tire sticks out past the rim edge...I only have 180's in the shop

I have a SM chain guide to help prevent the chain from rubbing the tire/rim on that side, but I have less clearance on the brake side from the swingarm....

4.5" wide rim, and your in luck cause I'm feeling useful.

Measured like this

* I thought I posted this hours ago, but apparently I only previewed the post - thank you GTAM for having an autosave function. *

Depends on what tire you are using, street or slick. With street I had two different tires both 160s but one measured a true180mm mounted and the other 160mm mounted, that is on 5''rim.The 160 was still tight on the chain side so I dished it very little and now its even on both sides. You cant dish your rims so depending on what tire you choose you might need spacers on the sprocket side as far as I know.If you use a slick I heard you can go wider, but I have no slicks mounted yet.Im running Dunlop Sportmax GTs right now.

Thanks that should help, Im going to my shop later and will use that measurement to get an idea of clearance. Although I believe on a wider rim I should get a little more width with a 160.

Oh and BTW nice Mitutoyo digimatic caliper I have the same one for work, and height and dial gauges too. Do you use that for work also? It would be a pretty expensive measuring tool for hobby use

Thanks what were the 2 tire brand/models you tired that were 180 vs 160mm mounted?
Im am on the fence about tires right now and I was hoping to go order or buy them tomorrow afternoon. The thing is I am not going to the track right away so I was thinking to get street tires just to play around on for now. Im really used to the old Pilot Powers and they are cheap, but I dont know how the rear in a 160 will fit or work for SM style riding. Pro6 has the Dunlop SM specific slicks and I read a lot of people say that is their favorite SM tire, and like you say even thou its a 170 its supposed to fit really narrow for its size. If I was going right to the track I know I would buy those for sure, as when I did track on my ZX6R I switched to Dunlop N-tec slicks and that really stepped my track riding confidence up a lot. I just dont know how those will work for messing around in the beginning because I wont be using warmers, and I will be riding in parking lots.

Id really appreciate some suggestions and hear your guys experiences with tires you've tried

The Q2s run wider,if I were just riding in parking lots and track I would go with SM slicks but Im blue plated so I ride street quite often.I dont think you posted how wide your wheels are,but it looks like it would be tight unless you can pull your wheel back some more. Here are my rims.
