To be masked or not to be masked

Apparently some kids are so allergic to peanuts , touching a doorknob that another kids that had it on his hands can leave a large enough sample to give kid B a reaction.
We have an acquaintance with nut allergies and were there when he reacted to sesame seeds , nobody knew certain seeds are a problem.
My kids both survived the peanut ban, you can work around it if you want to.

My dislike is the militant approach of the anti moms and the sweeping bans, but I may feel differently if it was my kid.

I’m guessing since this ban has been in place for 20yrs now, yes crazy, and we still have teachers marshalling lunch and sending home snacks , we would have a lot more classroom problems without the ban

Where do you draw the line?

A woman in Vaughan wanted oak trees cut down because her kids were allergic to acorns. Taste an acorn. You won't like it. Secondly, the kids were in their teens, not rug rats that crawl around putting things in their mouths. If they went to High Park or Algonquin do all the oak trees get cut down before they arrive.

If touching a door knob at a school is enough to trigger a reaction would a doorknob at a restaurant be any different? I like those little peanut butter packs and use them on my toast.

I would be horrified if I harmed someone by giving them something that killed or maimed them. The problem is that I don't grow and mill my own wheat or other ingredients. I don't have a gluten alarm in the kitchen.

I wonder why we have so many kids with allergies today. The guy next to me wearing the tin foil hat says it's all the chemicals in the processed foods we eat. We eat so many processed foods that we have become allergic to natural foods.

that's a late lagging indicator. by the time we see rise in those, it's too late.
wastewater data will let us know a bit before we start to see rise in hospitalizations and deaths.

but will anything preventative be done? i doubt it.
A bit like looking up from the cell phone and seeing brake lights in front of you already on.

Since we're still on this parallel...

I remember Magic cards were banned in elementary school. After Magic, it was Yu Gi Oh.

Banning Magic Cards was honestly one of the most stupid things I experienced growing up. I don't play Magic, but I know enough about it now that if an elementary school kid is playing it, that kid is exercising their brain more than most are.

The bans happened because of fights breaking out, theft, and whatever. Teachers had no idea wtf to do about this and we know how parents can be completely oblivious to their bastard of a child that needs disciplining (thieves), so they just banned it. So because of some edge cases, the entire activity gets banned and now kids are robbed of fun ways to exercise their brain.

-------

Now, here's another parallel and this is meant to be tongue-in-cheek and slightly offensive: you ever meet a kid with a heavily deliberating stutter? I was one. When I had to do presentations, I would break down crying. I literally cannot talk because my throat closes up; it was frustrating enough I'd scream the words out. Why the **** could everyone else talk normally but me?

I wanted them to ban presentations. It's not my fault I was born and abused into that state. I can type and write my **** out instead. So why the **** do I have to talk?

To cut the details short: by the time I was in college, people were asking me how to do presentations. The biggest one I did was for some open source community, with a hundred or so professionals.

-------
I have a very hard time being empathic with edge cases requiring things to change/get banned for them. Most of you should be able to see why; rise up, come up with your own solutions, or **** off.

Allergic to nuts? Don't go near them. So allergic that you doorknobs will **** you over? Wear gloves.

Banning Magic the Gathering playing cards…we’re doomed as a species.

pretty much. JT banned a whole bunch of firearms after a mass shooting...

...with none of them used in the shooting.
'shrug'🤷‍♂️
My bigger beef was it was ‘sold’ to the public as an assault rifle issue, almost nothing banned fit the bill. Anything relevant has been long banned already.

Black plastic = bad 🙄

Pit bulls getting banned because some people need to be executed (not the dogs, I love dogs)....I'm seeing a lot of parallels due to an edge case's incompetence.

It does indeed...
But yet look at public schools.
If one child has a severe peanut allergy that may lead to death, all peanut based food items are removed from the school, and parents are banned from sending their children to school with PB&J sandwiches etc. I would say 99% of the parents are "OK, we'll do this so 'Little Billy Suzy Boy/Girl' doesn't die."

I fail to see the difference with people masking up and getting shots etc.
But, that could very well be my own failing there...
Peanut ban is a low hanging fruit as there are millions of other options to give your kid to eat. Keep your PB&J at home and let them have wowbutter or other alternatives at school.

I'm allergic to peanuts myself but not severely..lets just say i keep benadryl liquid around just in case. I eat something (usually chocolate) with peanuts in it. But there are different levels of allergy (just like different levels of reaction to covid) but from what i understand the aftereffects vary wildly (and widely) but also have a much lesser effect on grade-school-age children then us adults.
The approach of banning peanuts + having epipens have probably reduced potential deaths by a lot. And there's research underway to treat them to a point where it might not be necessary.

The mask mandates affect kids a lot differently. Beyond the mental effect it has, kids can't learn pronunciation as easily, or emotional cues as easily. Sure i'll help with the learning (esp he's in French school) and there's his auntie, grandma who can also help with that but it's not the same in his main learning environment. We also talked about the skewed version of the world that kids have, not having known what "normal" looks like for most of their lives. Socialization skills are getting hampered; it will set this generation back in a lot of different aspects, and it'll be playing catch up.
Immunization records have always been necessary but there also have always been widely easily accessible exceptions to it for parents that don't wanna bother and honestly i don't think we've seen (in canada) any major outbreaks. Covid is a new evolving beast, i don't think any vaccine has been authorized for the 5 and under crowd (so jk to gr 1), but they are also very low risk. Now we have new vaccines available based on the more "traditional" approaches vs mRNA so some parents might feel more comfortable to go ahead with those options.

In the end covid19 is still less than 3 years old and we're still finding out more about it everyday, and it's still changing with every season.

Been in Texas since Sunday

Masking % is likely 1 in 500 outside of staff at restaurants and hotel etc which remains close to 100% masked.
I was in 5 different countries over 2 weeks in mid-Feb.
Covid mandates had been dropped in all places and almost 0% people were wearing masks. I expect you will see very few masks being worn within a week or so of the mandate being dropped here. Maybe not but it wouldn't surprise me at all based on what I saw elsewhere.

so no more masks in schools as of March 21, right after March Break...apparently CBC asked Juni if the province's move was scientific or political and he said "It's not supported by science right now because it's just too early. We would need at least one to two weeks more data to say, 'okay we're stable' and we just make it to the next step," he said.

Dr Gerald Evans, an infectious diseases physician, says the removal of capacity limits, vaccine certificates and mask mandates is happening in a relatively short amount of time, and that mask requirements should have been kept in place until the weather gets warmer and virus activity naturally diminishes.

ETFO, the public teacher union is against this (haven't heard from my union yet)....this is going to be interesting when we get back from break...

I’ve seen rumblings on social media about a walkout from schools on the 21st. I wouldn’t blame them. Frankly it’s this crap that emboldens the idiotic in society to state, truthfully for once, that government edicts are ********. It taints everything. Why should we believe you the next time if you pull political stunts like this now?

@jc100 I haven't heard that, however it doesn't surprise me...I'm sure some families will be going away, and they no longer have to isolate when they return from out of country...we shall see how many people continue to wear one..

Don't they need to show a negative test taken within a day of returning? They also all have to be vaccinated to leave and enter canada. How many more precautions do the teachers unions need?

Agreed.
What’s 2 more weeks of masks after 2 years of it?
Oh right...election.
:/

@DownUnder the rules have changed recently so I'm not 100% sure...and no, they don't have to be vaccinated because they are travelling with their parents...I'm in elementary remember, specifically grade 2, so aged 7/8...as for precautions, I have 3 out this week because of symptoms and no idea if positive, because they no longer have to tell us...like I said before, I'm torn...I can see both sides, however, I do think it's a bit too soon...waiting a couple of weeks after the break wouldn't have been a big deal...just like I guess you (or others) can say then it shouldn't be a big deal doing it two weeks earlier...

Ahh fair enough, I thought we were talking about lecturers complaining their students were traveling.

Why are the teachers union against lifting the mask mandate?

...because kids under 12 are like petrie dishes...they can and do bring viruses home which can affect parents, grandparents etc...the under 12 crowd is the least vaccinated group in Ontario (I can't remember the percentage, but it's low)...many families use schools as child care (and I understand people have to work) and pre-covid, would often send kids to school sick...until now, they've had to complete a daily self screening online and submit confirmation of a pass before going to school, but as of the 21st, that too is being discontinued (at least with it in place, we had some degree of assurance that kids weren't sick)...they've also lifted restrictions on isolating for siblings, when returning from outside Canada etc. as of the 21st...windows in most schools don't open much (mine opens 2-3" on a tilt outwards from the bottom)...class sizes aren't any smaller than pre-covid...

If you do some research, Dr. Juni (who I quoted in an earlier post and attached a link) says it's too soon...even Sick Kids Hospital (who DF has said before he listens to) agrees it's too soon...

Families are going to be travelling next week, and I'm sure numbers will rise (how much I don't know) after we return...and in fact, I've heard numbers ARE going up in many places that have already done away with them...

Can we leave them on forever?...no...

Is now the right time to get rid of them?...I honestly don't know...
