TMP lapping day Oct. 6-8

Uhm... yeah, don't do that when I'm there. Memories of buddy looping it and spilling oil down the straight a few years ago. :(

9 is a slow corner, which makes it tricky, but a lot of people seem to go slow through 10 even though it's quite a fast corner. On my SV I even shift up once between 9 and 10!
By wheelie I mean like 1" ;)

What gear do you run around the track in? I get up to the rev limiter in 4th going down the front straight, bang it into 3rd for turn 1 then run to the rev limiter in 3rd on the side straight (probably should be shifting to 4th) then bang it down into 2nd for turn 2 and leave it in 2nd for the rest of the infield. I see my shift light come on between 6 and 7 but I think that's the closest I get to the rev limiter on the infield.

It's an SV650, I shift a lot! I don't have enough power to use 1 gear. My tibialis gets tired at TMP by the end of the day from shifting so much! haha

lol :) I see what you mean! My bike does 175kph in 2nd and has more power than I can take advantage of, it takes effort just to keep the front wheel down!

I've seen some SV's do some serious spanking at TMP :)

i have seen dave do serious spanking :p

edit, that came out wrong

serious spanking at the track.. LOL

Looking to be a chilly one boys.......
11 degrees, exactly the same temp as last trip to TMP. Didn't seem to have an issue, and the sun wasn't even out!

You mean while riding my bike on the track? I don't think there's any way to say it right. The truth is out. haha...

haha... Sure Tim, I know what you're thinking, it's perfect practice for the final SOAR round. :) Wrong track, but still...

For me it's simple. Cold track + $160 track fee, or stay at home and eat turkey. :D I had a good season, beat my personal best at TMP and SMP LT, I'm content to call it a season.

Ha. Ya I have some other stuff to.do.this weekend and can't afford the tires for trackdays right now.

I'm just sayin, 11C is fine. Maybe wait till 10am to hit the track but it would be fine!

No, don't get in the habit of looking back. It's a very dangerous habit. If you have time to look back between 9 and 10 then you're way too slow in 10 ;) Just kidding, I know you're learning.

Anyway, I'd say take a look when you're heading onto the straight (done turning!). If people look close, maybe back off a bit and get a hand up for them to pass. Don't make any sudden moves to the inside unless you've given a good check to see that nobody is going that way. Alternatively, probably safest, put a hand up before 10, and take 10,11,12 slow and stay to the inside heading onto the straight. If nobody is there, get back on it and don't worry.

+1 on not looking behind you inbetween turns and in turns. Saw a dude do this in the corners when I was marshalling last year. I called it in and they warned him and he stopped doing in the corners then started doing it inbetween corners and soon after crashed between corner 8-9.

Yep. I wouldn't even do it until a good straight zone. There was a guy at Grand Bend in April that kept looking back and changing his line based on what he saw! This was the day weekend GB let "normals" sign up for the SOAR test weekend, so Ken made it one group racers and one group of everyone else. Scary. If that situation happens again I'll ask Ken if I can be in with the racers.

I'm new, this was my first season going to the track, so please don't laugh to what I'm about to say regarding the looking back:

What do you guys think about attaching tiny mirrors somewhere, like the edges of the windshield or the bar ends (e.g. the round ones they sell for blind spot for cars)? If they are tiny enough, I don't think there will be shattered glass and debris in the event of a crash. I'd imagine this will solve all problems with having to look back and see if you're holding somebody up. I for one find it extremely uncomfortable looking back at the straight, because I'm usually too preoccupied exiting the last turn and keeping the rev in 2nd up just to the point of loosing traction, and when I open it up fully, then I'm careful not to wheelie...and then when I go 3rd, then 4th---I'm already going 200kph+, I can't imagine looking over my shoulder at any of these moments...

As for coming this weekend---I guess nature has it's own way of influencing decisions. I woke up with sore throat today and nasal congestion. I don't think I'll enjoy my nose in the helmet in this condition, I'll be a risk to me and everybody else.

Stop looking back. It's the other rider's responsibility to get around you if they wish to / are able to.

Mirrors would get bounced at tech.
You should be able to hear somebody behind you. I've got an SV1000 twin that makes a good racket - I can still hear when somebody's on my tail, even with earplugs in. If I think they're stuck behind me and I'm holding them up, I'll get on the brakes earlier or roll off earlier on the straights to ensure they (and anyone else being held up by my fat *****) can pass easily and safely.

A little bit of situational awareness goes a long way here.

Wow. I'm sure almost every riders meeting I've ever been to (worth its salt) has said that overtaking is the responsibility of the rider doing the overtaking. And it must be done within the rules of the group you're riding in. And don't shoulder check. The only time i shoulder check is AFTER putting my arm up in a red flag situation to see who is behind me as I'm about to cut across the track to a marshalls station. In a normal session don't shoulder check. It unnerves the rider who is about to overtake. Don't check up, don't shoulder check. And don't try to rewrite rules and etiquette that's been working fine for years. Play by the rules or GTFO the track. Is it so difficult.

As for fitting mirrors, well what about indicators as well? What about traffic lights at the start of the front straight so you can all drag race down to turn 1? I despair, I really do.

Geez, I just asked a question, I'm not the one worried about holding somebody up, so far i've been among the faster riders in all sessions this season regardless of the group I happened to be.. Certainly don't want to change the tech rules and I don't find the need to look over my shoulder and what's behind either, yes, it is indeed the other rider's responsibility to pass. Maybe not relevant for Red where you can pass anywhere anytime, but good luck with passing me in green or yellow if you're behind me and you're faster than me in the turns, because even if you're faster, you're not gonna be too much faster to be able to pass safely on this small track. I'm on a litre, and I don't take the turns slow either, and I try to use the power of my bike to its possible maximum for my comfort in every straighter line and turn exit. ...and if I don't see you in my mirrors, you ain't going through baby...wait, what mirrors..!?
