TMP Labour Day Weekend

Ok, if you can't heat race tires up to proper operating temperature by riding them that means that riding alone doesn't generate enough heat. So then when you go riding after taking race tires off warmers, does it mean that race tires are losing heat and getting to the lower temperature that you would bring them up to without warmers (just by riding) anyways?

At slower tracks yes. Without the proper heat in the tire to begin with you can't push the tire to keep or generate more heat without falling on your face.

Sliding on your *** like you do every weekend doesn't count

Yes it does! and that was one time and it was really warm and I don't wanna do it again lol

A DOT race tire or race slick will never, ever get up to operating temp without warmers. Whoever told you that a few warm up laps is sufficient is completely wrong.

I'm itching to get down to the 1:17s with street / track tires and no warmers with at least 1 previous track day and a spring and summer commuting on them! Stock bike too! That's my goal! Then I'll lose 30 lbs and crack 1:16. Ambitious I know but as they say, it's 90% diet....so...maybe the dieting should come first?

I'll keep you posted;)

On the back of Rossi86's question....is there even a point in running slicks or DOTs at TMP if your lapping around 1:22 to 1:24....given that you can't get them up to temp riding the balls off them unless you're, what, down in the 1:15s? TMP being what it is, it seems Caboose is suggesting no amount of riding or warmers will maintain a properly functioning slick or DOT....unless you're running a hot race pace?

Just sayin....so why is anyone on a slick at TMP?

And if warmers get your tire up to 65C....well that's generally what most of us come off the track with, so if warmers get a tire up to 65C, I imagine a slick cannot maintain that heat at TMP and a better option would be a street / track tire that can, within 2 laps, without tire warmers.

If slicks need to get even hotter to 80C, well forget slicks all together, cause neither your warmers or riding is getting them that hot.

So again I ask, why would anyone run a slick at TMP?

Again, I know someone that run slicks at tmp with no warmers and he's not dead and he's managing 1:17-19 consistantly. But you are starting to discover what I'm getting at. If tmp doesn't generate heat then why am I coming off the track with hot tires sans warmers?

The tires will warm up, but the point is that they'll still not be up to the temperature at which they're designed to run. Yes they'll grip, but still won't be working as well as they could.

At 1:28 my Dunlop DOTs are hotter coming off the track than in the pits on warmers.
But I think it's due to stock suspension and 230lbs no gear.

Operating temps of slicks being 80C - 120C?

I havent been to tmp in years, but at other tracks I get Bridgestone DOT up over 180 F when I measure the temps after a session. No warmers.

no whhhay!!

Were you able to measure carcass and rim temp?

No, I just check to see if its close to operating temps, and to see the difference from one side of the tire to the other......quite a big difference sometime.

The carcass is pretty warm but I havent really checked, Im sure its cooler than the surface. Ill check next time.
