The "Official" Watch Thread and all Things Horological

I’m feeling the need for an orange faced watch , the Rotary super 7 which I had ordered from the UK is now discontinued and not available. They replaced it with the Rotary Henley , but I don’t dig it .
An orange Doxa would be a good choice , spendy for what it is , Seiko makes a great orange Color , but it’s a Seiko .
Anybody got a lead ?

Shinola Duck (spendy for a quartz, diver 'inspired', but very orange!)

Seiko Samurai (I know it's a Seiko, but I love these enough to not be able to resist. Still waiting for my King Samurai thanks to eBay's mule-based shipping system)

I have zero love for shinola. Interesting story but not a good enough story to open my wallet and the watches are sure as hell nothing special.

I'm fully 'meh', two shrugs up. Not for me, but I don't hate them. They seem to be operating a bit like Hamilton, trading on a vintage/retro feel, but a lot less successfully. The watch above was the most orange I could find, hence it's inclusion, and if a $950 USD Doxa is too much, then the options get slim. The also have an orange dial automatic diver for $2100 USD, but at that price, any Doxa is a no-brainer better choice.

If it's my money, based purely on looks (and you take away the Samurai), I actually like the Bulova best. Which is weird because I have little love for the brand and think of it as very 'mall watch' and often very gold (plated)...

Wife has a shinola , cool story and she likes it . She would never spend over $500 on a watch it’s not her thing .
The Bulova looks interesting, the Edox I like but not the sunburst , needs all orange .
Clive Cusslers hero in book, secret agent Dirk wears an orange Doxa ,

When Heuer and crew were making tach race car watches , they had a use . But it was 1960 . Now it’s just cool .
I collect dive watches , I do dive , but I have this fancy dive comp gizmo that makes my dive watch sort of redundant. I wear it in the water for nostalgia.
It’s style . Much like wearing a smart watch won’t make you smart .

My Dad did underwater salvage work for the military in the early 1950s and kept dive gear in our basement, so I’ve been fascinated with diving from a very early age. When I started diving, computers took up huge rooms and used punch cards and large magnetic tape reels. A dive watch was an essential piece of equipment. it also identified you as a member of a fraternity. You could spot a diver across the room by the watch they wore, because no one else was inclined to wear such a bulky tool on their wrist. Times have changed
As a kid I used to visit Birks Jewellers frequently to drool over the Rolex and Tudor Submariners on display. They were incredibly expensive, and far out of reach for a school kid. IIRC, a Rolex Submariner was more than $300.
My first dive watch was bought at Consumers Distributing at Kipling and The Queensway circa 1970. This thread inspired me to take it to my local watchmaker for its first service, a couple of weeks ago.

Circa 1982 I upgraded to a Heuer 1000. That served me well for almost 3 decades and hundreds of dives, as I transitioned to using a wrist mounted computer.

After more than 4 decades, I finally got the watch I coveted since childhood, as a milestone birthday gift to myself. Accordingly, I chose the 50th anniversary commemorative model.

I don't like that Bulova round case. Get the Doxa.

Considering the Doxa Sub 300 has a very similar turtle/cushion case design, I assume you mean the Sub 200?

I’ve been on a dive computer for 2 decades , and they just keep getting better . But I still wear a watch . It’s a belt and suspenders thing .

I’m looking seriously at a surface air pump with a 50ft hose , it would do 90% of what I need in Ontario

I’ve worn a Tudor submariner for years , it’s almost iconic , I’d like a Rolex sub, I just don’t want ( can’t ) part with 15k ( or more)

Tudor has some really nice watches these days. If I didn't have a Sub I'd be grabbing a blue one ASAP. I like the Pelagos, except for all the writing on the dial and the overly complex clasp. I like the BB58 except for the smallish size.

I say go for it. Mine cost far less than that (well below half) and is now worth far more. A Rolex watch is the only commodity on earth that you can be sure will always appreciate in value. And it can always be instantly turned into cash, no matter where on earth you may be. Plus, in the mean time you get to enjoy it every day!

I think the days of doubling your money on a Rolex (or any of the trinity, outside of extremely limited pieces) is pretty much over.
