The "Official" Watch Thread and all Things Horological

FitBit moved to a subscription model for premium features whereas Garmin is subscription free for everything. If you’re ok with basic features FitBit is fine. The Garmin has way more features than I’d ever use but I do actually use the notification features (saves the extra 0.001 calories burned from taking my phone out my pocket). Useful during meetings where you can more discreetly see whether something needs to be attended to. I use the Garmin during golf to see just how woefully pathetic my drive is (it has downloadable courses and hole tracking). The process is automatic after starting a round and it’s good to see whether I’m improving or not. I think it can also be used for shooting sports too which I need to look at.

I stopped paying attention to smartwatches once the Pebble got discontinued. 10 years later and still haven't seen one worth buying since

Best smartwatch EVER! Never missed a notification, the vibe was awesome! Over a week battery life. Still have the original Kickstarter version and the Steel. It killed me to take them off. Have had six smartwatches since, from Chinesium to Fitbit (figured since they bought out Pebble they would learn something) to Samsung Galaxy (lucky if I get two days out of a charge). I am not a fitness type person so those apps are worthless to me and I already know when I wake up how I slept. Would be nice to have ECG or blood pressure monitors but Health Canada has issues with them here. I just want RELIABLE notifications.

I was a poor highschool kid when they launched on Kickstarter, but once they came out and were more readily available I was in uni and bought one. I just went and dug it out of the drawer but not quite sure where the charger is. Still looks good

Sad that devices that you own can be killed by loss of contact with the mothership. Garmin has been good about devices working until the piece you own no longer has life left in it.

I’ve got one of those also!

I am stupid enough to buy one but have no where near the commitment to line up. If I could click on line and it showed up at my door probably.

I see nothing wrong with buying it, hell I want one.

Just won’t pay more than retail or line up for one. Or anything else for that matter.

For Amazon always check who the seller is and look at their feedback both for the item and for other items the same seller is selling like it.

Look to see if there are complaints the watch did not show up with the original packaging, or missing accessories/paper work in the packaging that should have come with it. Also warranty problem complaints. In these cases grey market sellers including some selling returned stock, seconds, etc.

Personally I have no issue with grey market in this context BUT the savings need to match the scenario.

For Citizen you can extend the warranty through Citizen for 1 year with the serial number so that shouldn’t be an issue, same with Tissot (through the Tissot website). The problem with warehouse deals is that you don’t quite know what you’re going to get even from the description. However, most are just open box but regardless of how evil Bezos is, the free returns with no questions asked is valuable here. I don’t know about Orient or Seiko in terms of warranty. The two Orient watches on there look very nice. The Tissot Seastars look really good. Some savings aren’t a lot, some are pretty good.

Looks like someone waited in line and values their time very much…

He's getting roasted in the comments.

"I honestly get happy when I see these posts because I know the comment section is going to be great. Extra points for posting receipts so we can all see exactly how much you are trying to rip people off."

"Feel sorry if he had to wait in line just to eat all these comments."

I don't understand the attraction to complicated watches by people who, I am certain, have no need for the use of such complications, and I suspect don't even know how to use them. I buy dive watches because I'm a diver. Are all these guys race car drivers and pit crew?

Even if they were race car drivers and pit crew, the number of locations that a tachymetre is useful is very low (and there are far better solutions now).

Some people like complications just because. Nobody has ever needed nor will ever need moonphase on their wristwatch. Most dive watches will never see a dive. Much of it comes down to style.

Same could be said for fast bikes, fast cars, powerful audio systems, large homes etc
Since when does "need" have anything to do with our interests?

When Heuer and crew were making tach race car watches , they had a use . But it was 1960 . Now it’s just cool .
I collect dive watches , I do dive , but I have this fancy dive comp gizmo that makes my dive watch sort of redundant. I wear it in the water for nostalgia.
It’s style . Much like wearing a smart watch won’t make you smart .
