The "Official" Watch Thread and all Things Horological

I’m not knowledgeable enough to know where the serial numbers should line up with minute markers on a Rolex , so I’m only buying that from an authorized dealer or well known trader .

Conversation I had with a collector friend last night was about the number of low cost Seiko and Gshock fakes showing up . Simply because counterfeiters will fake anything if opportunity exists
Why fake $5.00 bills when you can fake $50? Because nobody looks a $5s

G-shocks being injection molded helps too. Cheap and easy to pound out as many as you want once you have the molds. Molds cost a lot unless you stole them or use actual casio line to produce extra for you. Is a watch produced on the production line without casio oversight a fake? Just document that one chamber in the mold had an issue for a shift and you have a crap ton of cases in your possession that are scrapped according to the paper trail.

My brother manufactures much of his product line in China , anything is possible. You can design engineer and pay for molds , supply drawings and CNC programming, but if you have any work subcontracted, all bets are off .

It really works like that , ok enough TSC brand compressors for today , which to orange paint and we are making Powerfist . Start bolting on the motors with bushings not bearings because they wanted it .76 less . And call next door , we are all out of CSA approval stickers .

I've got the BB GMT, Chrono Panda and Harrod's Edition.

Unless you have a tiny wrist thickness isn't actually an issue.

I've got watches such as the Rolex GMT Master II, Submariner and Santos de Cartier to compare to and I would still never be deterred by a Black Bay.

I love that new BB 54, my wife has a Yachtmaster 37 and I'm thinking of picking up that 54 as a vacation/everyday alternative for her.

As much as I love Rolex, Tudor is my go to.

I do have a tiny wrist. BB58 fits me, the 3 you have do not. Love the look of all 3 actually, the harrods edition especially but once on my wrist, it just was not comfortable and looked wrong. GMT Master 2, somehow fits fine due to the thickness.
Tiny wrist problems, even if some watches are small and thin on paper, lug-to-lug and shape makes a big difference. Example: the Tissot PRX 80 does not fit because of the lug flare and the Bvlgari Octo due to the shape.
New 54 looks great and I would love a BB58, just have too many watches in that price bracket and the batman already fits that look.
Having gone out and handled most of these, my money is still being saved up for a green steel GO panomaticlunar.
Need something special to bring out on weekends and the GO finishes and movements for the price is amazing to me.
Second option if I can't find a good price would be the green Omega Speedy 57.

Beautiful watch in white. I have no love for the green. It's probably polarizing. You either love it or hate it. Could make it harder to sell in the future (or could make it worth more as there will be fewer available secondhand).

Keep this in mind. Not sure if it matters on a Tissot as secondary market pricing would be brutal anyway.

"is it come with a warranty card and the authorized dealer stamped on it. ?
Answer:
No warranty card at this price.

No it does not. But your warranty is your invoice.
By Walter on December 19, 2022
No

Seller warranty only
By LUXURY WATCH DIRECT SELLER on December 19, 2022"

One other review seemed to suggest it did come with a warranty. My Amazon Tissot did but it may have been a different seller.

My wife wears a smart watch , I have no need , hers is a garmin fenex6 , which is the same as three of her friends so she bugs them with technical questions.

All the big guns ,Rolex and Omega are looking into smart tech since about 11 zillion have switched to smart watches .

Anybody owned one long enough to know when is “ end of life”?

I'm still on my Apple Watch 1st generation...only issue with it is my son picked it up (when he was 1) and threw it onto a tile floor within 1s of getting a hold of it, so the response ain't so great in one section.

But I use it for tracking my walks, and battery is good for a full day of wear, so ... having bought it used (because I'm cheap) it works for 5+ years with no issue (that I would fault the manufacturer for).

My wife and I have had a few. Only Garmin's. Used mainly for activity tracking but double duty as watches. Eol on all so far has been watch death after 3-7 years.

No way in hell would I pay a top tier brand premium on a smart watch. I actually expect them to be worse than much cheaper options as they have little history and very few users to amortize software cost over. Didnt Tag have a plan where you buy a ridiculously overpriced smart watch now and then in three years you send it in with a cheque and they give you a mechanical movement? So stupid. Like cellphones and most other tech, all smartwatches are destined for the dump other than a couple that survive as oddities in some collections.

I am tempted with that GARMIN posted earlier for $500….but…$500 will buy me a whole walk of strapping.

I have a collection of Samsung, Huawei and various Garmin smart watches. The retiring of a watch for me was down to battery life. When the tech for that improved I got a new watch. Fenix 6 watches are great for battery life for the standard version and even better for the solar version so I don’t see a need to upgrade for quite a while. Garmin is pretty good at supporting older watches too so that’s the reason for the garmin. With other companies it would depend on support and, as they aren’t smart device manufacturers as their core company model, I wouldn’t be super confident on that.

Make sure you see it in person. The garmin X's are really big. Almost comical if you are wearing it as a normal watch. Think of invicta in a smartwatch. Bigger than you g-shock by quite a bit. All that said, they are great at what they do. Do you still have that fitness allowance from work? Hard to spend that on strapping.

I have the non-x version of the Fenix 6 and it’s an OK size. Not sure I’d want anything bigger. All the Fenix 6 versions seem to be on sale at this point.

Calling it a smart watch may be a stretch but I go with the smallest (so I do not look like two watch guy....) heart rate capable fitbit I can buy and I wear it on my right wrist (watch on left). When I work out I usually have my phone on me for GPS tracking, fitness tracking, etc. I get about three years out a fitbit before they get flaky. For myself, I don't see a need for the extra features higher end smart watches offer (I have my phone on me for most of that). As the tech keeps getting smaller I expect to get one of the ring fitness trackers in the future.

I also have an old school style heart rate monitor watch that uses the chest strap. I find the fitbit useless for seeing heart rate live while working out. For this watch I have a handlebar mount for it when cycling (so I can continuously see it).

I thought about getting a Garmin but in the end the above does everything I need.

Fitness allowance is gone as it was swallowed up by kids' summer camps / swimming lessons.

I didn't even know FitBit was still around. I used to have their original units, good to see they're still about.

Before the instinct I had the smallest garmin for a similar reason. I was attracted to instincts battery life (weeks without gps), lack of touchscreen (normally flaky if you use them for water sports) and much better WR rating (100m on instinct, 50m or less on many of their other watches). It is nice getting notifications on the watch for who is calling/messaging/emailing to see if it is worth pulling out phone (or going to find phone if it isn't in my pocket). If it was much smaller, that wouldn't really work (and is already marginal on my watch. it is much better on my wifes colour touchscreen one).
