The "Official" Watch Thread and all Things Horological

jfc I put the faceplate on, went to change the date, and nothing works. Took the faceplate back off, and the new gear is broken.... F*CK
So broken gear is the symptom not the cause. I assume you tried it out of the case and it worked fine? You changed the date ring right? Is it binding once you put it in the case? Maybe auto-advance has enough leverage. I assume you removed the broken tooth from the first gear and it isn't floating around in there jamming things up?

Yeah it broke before even putting it in the case. I just put the dial on and went to turn it again and nothing turned.
Date ring I didn't touch
Yeah broken tooth was recovered.

I'm saying f*ck the date and buying a dial with it blocked off. It can sit hidden back there

In for a penny in for a pound. New faceplate with no date = $52. New movement with day/date = $88.

Just gonna swap the entire movement. Its a newer NH36 with hacking so should be a bit of an upgrade. I just want to finish this thing and never touch it again.

That seems incredibly inexpensive, for what it is. I'm going to query them about a bezel insert for my Heuer 1000.

+1 for Perrin. Got a capacitor for one of my Kinetics from them in the mail yesterday. It was shipped next day.

Wife bought me a nice watch recently but it’s too large.

Need a kit to shorten the links. Quick recommendations?

I'm guessing pins and not screws? Just push them out with a drift (or screwdriver). Make sure you push in the direction of the arrow. Be super careful you don't slip and leave a huge scratch in the coating. Tap a tap tap.

How big is it? Can you get away with adjusting the pin in the clasp?

Grab the Amazon kit FMJ recommended, a small enough drift is something most don’t own , and in the kit you get a nifty holder for the watch.

As a home quick fix , I used to take a small finishing nail , dull the point, now it’s a tiny drift . Remember finish nails from back in the day when people hit nails with hammers ?

Do you have a side view of the bracelet to see if it is pins, rivets, screws... or something incredibly evil (like U shaped clips).

For pins ~95.376% of the time I use one that looks like this (not this one, but similar--just grabbed a pic online). This one and mine will not push it all the way out so you grab it with pliers and pull it out the rest of the way if need be. Plastic so it does not mark things up too much. Mine has a height adjustment for different thickness bracelets, not sure where I even got it I have had it for decades. They are pretty cheap.

BTW Perrin has what looks to be a higher quality one with a full length pin for ~$20! See below... The pin does look a little thick though so it may not do all bracelets (one with thinner pins).

Sometimes it does not get the job done... I also have what others mentioned, basically watch size drift pins (three different sizes) and a tiny brass jewellers hammer and a plastic holder for the bracelet with groves/holes in it... Never my first choice.

I have one of these but I find the above plastic dealy works much better as the stop tends to slide. Not recommended.

Of course we can always swing by and use mine....

OK, not really that sure on the percentage, lol, but most of the time.

It has extra pins in the description. Noting about the diameters being different.

I have half a dozen of the cheaper presses that come with bracelets. If you're in the area you can have one of them. The kits on Amazon are a good deal for what you get. Might be better to get one that's a few extra bucks more but comes with other useful stuff like extra spring bars and case back removal tools.

Thanks all, any recommendation for the full kit for band adjustment and battery changing?

@backmarkerducati they are pins. Just checked.

@FullMotoJacket is that a part of any larger kit?

I def don’t want to go to that crook watchmaker I went to last time.

Hell while I’m at it I can try and fix my other watch where the button got stuck.

That's just a kit for removing straps and resizing (most) bracelets.

For a few bucks more you can get a kit that will do that and has the tools to remove (most) case backs and replace batteries. They're not watchmaker tools by any means, but they're ok for light home use.
