The Official Ongoing Kitchener-Waterloo and surrounding areas thread

Re: The Official 2011 Kitchener-Waterloo and surrounding areas thread.

I take it you guys have been there before? Fontana village was a great place to stay, reasonable rates. How serious are you about the trip and does anyone have a truck/trailer ? I'd assume your trailering down. I would also suggest driving there on a saturday, resting sunday, then be good to rock monday-friday, drive back saturday.

I found taking the extra day to rest is a good idea, it can be a long drive. Last year someone write off a brand new bike the first day after driving through the night. (rider was ok, luckily).

Hey Guys...
Last summer a couple of us were tossing about the idea of doing a trip down to the infamous Tail of the Dragon this year.
My holidays are July 14-29 (can't change them - it's a shop shut down).

Was thinking of a 4-5 day trip. Leave first thing (i.e. 6am) on a Sunday morning, ride Monday - Wednesday, return on the Thursday or Friday.

If enough of us are interested and can commit soon, I'm thinking it would be a good idea to book a cabin instead of individual hotel rooms (will save us some money).
Gary (from Hamilton) has told me he'll go anytime, SpyRadar (Jin) is very much interested, and so is one of his friends. That potentially makes 4.

Anyone else? I can take my bike in the bed of my Ranger and tow a trailer as well (1 bike only to be on the safe side in the mountains).

Gary (from Hamilton), SpyRadar and his buddy have all been.
The general plan of action that was being tossed about was:
Be on the road 6am, Sunday morning - arrive late afternoon/early evening.
Ride Monday-Thursday
Return home Friday.

That will give us 4 solid days of riding, and we can be home for any other commitments we have on the weekend.
Definitely won't be driving all night and then hitting the Dragon right away. That's just silly IMHO.

Planning on staying at the Fontana - if we get 6 people committed to the trip, we'll rent a cabin. Should get that firmed up soon though before they're all rented out.

Truck/Trailer the bikes down. Gary's got a truck and trailer, I've got a truck - if somebody has a trailer, I can tow it (1 bike only -- Gary's the same).

Re: The Official 2011 Kitchener-Waterloo and surrounding areas thread.

Good advise on the rest last time I drove down overnight, arrived at the Gap around noon and then rode that day into the night. It was stupid and I was way too tired to be riding especially after dark down there. If I were to do it again I would leave early and get a good sleep then ride on the second day.

Any of the other lurkers coming out tonight?
7:30 at Casey's by the Sunrise Centre.
At the moment it looks like we'll need a table for about 6.

Re: The Official 2011 Kitchener-Waterloo and surrounding areas thread.

I should be there for 8:30ish...save me a pint.

I was thinking we should try to grab one of the big tables in the bar area. Hopefully it's not too busy.

Thinking over you towing with your car.. it probably would be absolutely terrible for your transmission to tow 2 bikes and a trailer. Flat lands, ok, hills and mountains, not so kosher.
Checked the tow capacity of my truck -- 2300 lbs. Would definitely be better off towing with the truck and throwing gear in the bed (has a cap which can be put on so it's enclosed).
Just thoughts on saving your pocket lots of money in case your tranny (and no, I don't mean Jer or Dean) goes kaput. Unfortunately, my truck is pretty basic - no air conditioning, so it'll be a warm trip.

Sounds good. At the very least I could tow my own if needed, although I wouldn't mind being driven around! And don't worry about the A/C. My car has it but I never use it!

I tried to find your post with the dates but I couldn't find it. Any chance of re-posting? (*Oh no....not a re-post!)
The entire way home my wife was bugging me to go on the trip....so keep me posted.

July 14-29 are the dates I posted up on the previous page. Somewhere in there...

Re: The Official 2011 Kitchener-Waterloo and surrounding areas thread.

OK guys, I've checked into pricing for the Fontana Village.
For a regular room in the hotel: 1 king or 2 queen beds: $109 / night
Hemlock 3 Bedroom Cabin: 1 King, 1 Queen, 2 Twins, 2 Bath, no phone: $229 / night
Magnolia 3 Bedroom Cabin: 1 King, 1 Full, 2 Twins, 2 Baths, no phone, washer/dryer, garden style hot tub: $229 / night
Azalia 3 Bedroom Cabin: 1 Queen, 2 Twins, Twin Bunkbeds, phone, whirlpool tub, fireplace: $229 / night

So, it would work out to be about the same price renting a cabin as it would regular hotel rooms if we go with 4 people occupancy.
Now if somebody like Jer would stand up and ask his riding "girlfriend" to come along, we'd get 5 in a cabin, cutting the cost.

Got 1 other option from a fellow GTAM'er. They've got a Fontana cabin, (2 bedrooms (1 Queen bed, 2 twins), fold out couch, 2 baths, all linens and dishes) for rent as well for about $140 a night.

Let me know what you guys think!!!

As I said lastnight, I don't want to be crashing on no couch!
I would either fork out some extra cash for a regular room or be willing to pay a little extra for one of the rooms in the cabin.
And it looks like I'm about 90% 'IN' for this trip.
