"The Beer Store’s secret sweetheart deal with LCBO revealed" - says The Star

Re: "The Beer Store’s secret sweetheart deal with LCBO revealed" - says The Star

I learned something new today.....
“Lobbying is an essential part of democracy,” Wynne’s office proclaimed, followed by a disclaimer: “Any suggestion that any individual contribution or interaction may unduly influence government policy is false.”

Your quote and this "the Speaker of the Legislature was unceremoniously summoned to the Premier’s Office several years ago by a top staffer, where a Labatt operative was waiting to lecture him about the serving of rival craft beer on the premises."

Certainly had me shaking my head

"Ontario’s politicians aren’t bought outright. They are simply seduced — assiduously."

"A Toronto Star tabulation shows more than $525,000 was donated to the three major political parties by The Beer Store, its foreign owners and the union representing beer industry employees in 2013 and 2014. That windfall contrasts sharply with the federal political scene, where any donations by corporations and unions are prohibited by law."

This is like in The Truman Show where everyone's in on it but Truman.

How is it we all see what's going on, but nothing is being done?

Oh that's right.....Money.

Prostitution is live and well in our political system

And whom are you waiting for something to be done?
Another government office?:D

Exactly, that's how politics and politicians roll these days. They still have ways to get caught up though to the US congress and senate. These guys are really high caliber, hence they can never get anything done.

The statement produced by Wynne's office is troubling though, not because that they think this way and practice it every day... most people know and expect that ... but how open and blatant are they about it.

It used to be they'd **** you to your back, now they **** you to your face.

People aren't ashamed anymore. This actually warrants people walking around with forefinger in air chanting we're number 1.

There's actually supposed to be a valid principle behind lobbying, as different people have tried to explain to me to no avail. I can maybe get it if everything that's said is in the public domain, and open to be challenged by opposing interests. But it's all secretive and greased with money. I can't see how it could possibly do any good that way, except for big-money corporations.

Irocian - wherefore art thou?

Valid principle would only work if you let various non-profit or public interest groups lobby for things like clean air, low pollution, public health care ... once you let the snakes whose only goal is to increase profit of companies wander around your elected officials, bad things happen.

So, it's virtually impossible for any sort of valid principle to exist. The money always talks, as our premier shamelessly directly/indirectly explained to the people of this province.

At the bike show with his waybill to show us that the brewers are selling their beer for what it costs them to make it.

Correction: the brewers are selling the beer to us for the same price they sell it to their own stores.

This is true. My interpretation (while incorrect) is more fun and humorous though. ;)

I just saw Fee Waybill running scared on the tube. Sounds like he was drinking.

Re: "The Beer Store’s secret sweetheart deal with LCBO revealed" - says The Star

My local beer store at Hurontario and Brisol was supposed to be open from 12 to 5 today, I went there at 2pm and it's not open. They are too inept to even follow their own hours -- open up this market to allow for competition already and end this nonsense.

Signs don't mean anything anymore. It's a sign of the times. New Years Eve @ 4:30pm I went to the local Timmies. Sign on the door (been there the whole holiday season) said open to 6pm. I overheard the manager tell staff eff it we'll close at 5. Sucks to abide signs these days.

Everything in Alberta is over priced because of high cost of transportation of goods and labor.
