Transport truck driver charged after crash on Highway 401

Around 7:35 a.m. on Monday, Elgin OPP responded to the scene of the single-vehicle crash in Dutton-Dunwich where a transport truck with a trailer entered the ditch in the westbound lanes.

It's idiots like this that make me question my decision to get on the bike every time.

So many people driving with probation orders, under the influence, etc etc etc...they've shown they actually DGAF about anyone else but themselves.

Worst that happens is I get hit / killed / injured and the mofo escapes. Then gets off with a slap on the wrist because the judge didn't want to impact their ability to earn a living, or because having a charge will affect their Permanent Resident application...

Hopefully not. If the article is correct that it was breach of probation, and not breach of pretrial release terms, then he could be liable to a custodial sentence equal in term to the probation period. In other words get 2 years probation and blow it, get 2 years in prison.

It was just strange that it was times three. If you get out of jail once, don't you just get probation once? Or do you get probation on each charge you were convicted of?

I'm not really up on the parole system but perhaps it was three charges, each of which would be considered a breach?

I watch a ton of Judge Simpson's cases from Michigan. You don't want to screw with him. He'll joke around with you for an hour and then if you step out of line, he'll jump on you with jackbooted feet. He's fair, but don't test him.

Oh, there have been others that were very similar. Like the guy who was suspended and did his hearing in his work truck, on a construction site, wearing a hard hat.

Get caught driving with suspended license in Michigan and report to jail today. In ontario, commit a criminal offense while on bail for multiple criminal offenses and judge will have you home for dinner in almost every case. Get caught driving with a suspended license and jp suspends your non-existent license again. I'm a fan of the Michigan approach.

Our legal system out performs the American system in the vast majority of cases. The one thing that we need to deal with better is repeat offenders, who simply don't give a damn about penalties.

If you're a Canadian who gets pulled over for "criminal speed" in the United States don't be surprised if you are taken to jail, to be arraigned ASAP. You would be considered a flight risk, as a non resident.
 
Well "Oh snap!", like the kids say. Turns out that the driver lied to The Press, who don't seem to have checked their sources. This is from the most recent hearing.

Edit to clarify - If you have never had a Michigan driver's license and you don't pay your child support, the Family Court will 'suspend' your non existent license.

 
Beauty. 401 to 410 ramp and cage realized too late they were in the southbound lane and wanted to go north. Cut across the bullnose directly into a tractor trailer and got chewed up. That one move alone should put them back to before G1 as they obviously have no ability to make the appropriate decisions while driving.

There is an ability test where you hold your hands out in front of you with your index fingers pointed at each other but a foot apart. Then you move your hands together get the two fingers to touch.

If you miss you don't get to go to U of T surgery school.

We need a test like that for D-1.

Seriously though, when you work on a pilot's licence a huge percentage of your time is spent practicing emergency situations. Road test: "You drove for 15 minutes and didn't hit anything. Here's your licence."

I hope they add a computer game portion to testing soon. Put people in stressful and dangerous situations and see how they behave. If you crash or make a stupid choice like cutting across a bull nose you fail. For obvious reasons they can't make the stressful situations on the road. It must be scary enough being an examiner without intentionally triggering scenarios where the drivers can crash.

Closing a major highway for stupidity should come with an automatic $1M bill submitted to your insurance company. The economic impact of bunging up hundreds of thousands of vehicles far exceeds that.

EDIT:
This was close to a disaster. They punted the bridge over about 75% of its width.
